Man & Woman Hurt After Vehicle Tumbles Over Hill

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It had to be a frightening experience for a couple in Pittsburgh's Allentown section.

Neighbors said the couple was in their car, coming down a steep hill on Eureka Street, when the car careened over a hillside, falling about 20 feet, landing in a heavily wooded area near the corner of Renwick and Excelsior Streets.

"That's all I heard was a big bang, and right away, I knew it came from over the hill," Tracey Thomas said.

Michael Plish and a friend climbed down the hill to get to the wreck to see if they could be of any assistance, until police and paramedics arrived.

Plish told KDKA TV's Ralph Iannotti "I was sitting in my bedroom, I heard a car squealing real bad; I looked out the window and the car just picked up speed, and shot right off the cliff."

Plish said a tree in stopped the car from tumbling further down the hill.

"Me and another guy went down and put the car in park. We kept them awake until the ambulance guys got here."

He added "the lady was pretty bad; the guy wasn't as bad, they hit right on."

Both victims had to be extricated from inside the car, first responders cut the doors and lifted them from the wreckage. As they awaited the arrival of police and paramedics, Plish said the driver told him his brakes weren't working as he drove down the hill.

The woman was hospitalized at UPMC Mercy in serious condition, her husband was listed in stable condition.

KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti reported early Saturday morning that both were in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
