Security Ramps Up In Pittsburgh On Fourth Of July

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Good music always draws a large crowd especially on Independence Day.  When there's hundreds of thousands of people converging on downtown Pittsburgh police have to be extra vigilant to keep people safe.

"I'm not stopping my life because of terrorism or anything else but it's always good to have extra security," Matt Berry of Bethlehem, Pa. said.

"I feel like if you worry about things too much you'll never do anything so if I'm able to go home tonight safe I'll be very happy," Chantele Mitchell-Miland of Pittsburgh said.

Terrorism of course is a concern in light of what's been going on internationally.

This is why local enforcement are playing it safe.  They have their command post set up right by Point State Park.

"We have a lot of resources out that you can see and can't see because it's our overarching responsibility to do everything we can to try and protect the attendees to events here," Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay said.

"Not really in this part of the world. Not really in Pittsburgh especially.  I have friends in France and everything and tell them to be safe going into big gatherings," Suvir Singh of India said.

Bag checks were set up outside the Point before onlookers were allowed to enter.

"Look at Orlando. That could happen anywhere. What are you gonna do. Sit in your home and be a prisoner?" Patricia Berry of Bethlehem, Pa. said.
