Teen, 14, Fatally Shot While Lighting Fireworks In Rankin

RANKIN (KDKA) -- A teenage boy has died after being shot in Rankin on Monday night while celebrating the Fourth of July.

It happened just before 10 p.m. in the courtyard at Hawkins Village.

The 14-year-old boy died a short time later at the hospital.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office says Kennir Parr of Swissvale died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

The boy was shot in the head in the courtyard outside of an apartment.

According to Allegheny County Police, Parr and his friends were lighting fireworks when the bullet struck him. Police says the shot "may have come from a short distance away."

"From the people we were able to talk to, they didn't immediately recognize there was a gunshot because of the fireworks in the area," said Lt. Andrew Schurman, of Allegheny County Police. "It wasn't until the young man fell and didn't immediately get up that they realized he had been shot."

Police say as many as 30 to 40 people were in the area either watching or lighting fireworks when it happened.

An autopsy is planned for Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the shooting is being asked to call the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit at 412-473-1300.
