Veterinarian Warns Of July 4th Dangers To Pets

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - From food to fireworks, the Fourth of July is filled with things that we all love. But, they can be a real nightmare for pets.

Even just being around large crowds can terrify pets if they're not used to it.

"We had a picnic this weekend and my dogs got into some beer. So, you just have to be on guard," Dr. Mike Hutchinson, of Animal General in Cranberry Township, said.

Dr. Hutchinson said it's most important to keep dogs away from alcohol and fatty foods.

"They'll take a wing or a rib and they'll get an obstruction and end up with a very costly emergency visit to your veterinarian," Dr. Hutchinson said.

While you're outside, it's also important to make sure your pet isn't getting overheated.

"Even if they're not doing a lot, they can't cool down easily when they're out in the sun and it's hot and humid out because they pant and unfortunately it's just very, very difficult to cool down," he said.

Dr. Hutchinson recommends checking the forecast before you go to a picnic. If it's going to be hot and humid, it's probably better to leave your pets at home.

"Her tail immediately zooms between her legs. Her body starts shaking. She starts to pace, then she pants," dog owner Arlene Lenok said.

Lenok's dog, like many others, is scared of loud noises, which include fireworks.

The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society recommends closing the curtains in your home, so your dogs can't see the fireworks.

Dr. Hutchinson said putting them in an inner room within your home is even better.

"Maybe play some music to distract them a little bit, that does help. And then have some toys and things that they're used to around them," he said.

If your dog is really anxious, the FDA recently approved the first and only drug to treat anxiety in dogs.

It's called Sileo and vets say it can provide a calming effect without sedating your pet.
