Burglary At Squirrel Hill Bike Shop Under Investigation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police are investigating an overnight burglary at a bike shop in Squirrel Hill.

The glass on the front door of Biketek has already been replaced following the overnight burglary.

It was smashed in and shattered around 3:30 a.m.; and this isn't the first time that a bike shop on Forbes Avenue Hill has been the target of a break-in.

Just a few doors down, another bike shop was burglarized earlier this year.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Emily Schaffer says it was the burglar alarm at Biketek that alerted officers to the scene early Wednesday morning.

Police believe the thief entered the store when they broke the front door.

"When we arrived on scene officers found the front door to the business shattered, with a brick lying inside. So, we believe the actor or actors may have shattered the front door with a brick," said Schaffer.

Officers talked to the store's owner and discovered a bicycle had been stolen.

"We don't know if they were targeting this bike or if they just took the first thing that they saw when they went into the store," said Schaffer.

Biketek isn't the only bicycle shop in Squirrel Hill to be burglarized recently. Pittsburgh Police say a thief stole two bikes from the Pro Bikes shop, also on Forbes Avenue, in March.

"I hope they found the person that did it," said Bob Noll, an avid cyclist who lives in Squirrel Hill.

Noll knows the importance of bike safety and bike security.

"So, when I ride my bike in [to work], I carry it up and keep it in my office; and at home; I keep it in my basement," added Noll.

Pittsburgh Police say anyone with information on this burglary should call the Zone 4 office.
