Mother Accused Of Lashing Out At Officers After Being Found Passed Out

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A local mother is accused of lashing out at police officers and other first responders after she was found passed out on a bench on the South Side with her child.

Police say customers and employees told them that they tried to wake up 35-year-old Anna Watson after they found her slumped over and passed out at the GetGo convenience store on East Carson Street. She had a young child with her.

Police managed to wake her up after they arrived.

Officers say she had red, glassy eyes. They say she may have been under the influence of narcotics.

According to investigators, when Watson tried to stand, she nearly fell and had to sit back down.

Watson had a red abrasion on her left eye that appeared swollen.

At first, police say they were going to cite her for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. However, investigators say that's when Watson refused to cooperate.

When officers looked in her purse, they say they found a bag of marijuana and a glass pipe.

The child was handed over to paramedics on the scene. According to authorities, that's when Watson lunged at paramedics and grabbed the child, screaming, "You won't take my child."

She tried to run toward the exit with the child, but one of the officers took him away.

When one of the officers put her in handcuffs, officials say she slipped out and tried to assault him with an open cuff.

Police managed to restrain her, but once they placed Watson in a patrol car, she tried escape through an open window. Police say Watson spun around putting her feet out of the window and kicking the officer in the neck and chest.

Once Watson was restrained, police took the child to Children's Hospital to be checked out. Officials said they believed the child had been exposed to drugs and had not eaten.

Watson was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where police say her alleged unruly behavior required her to be put into restrains. Officials say she tried to chew through tubes the hospital staff had hooked her up to.

She's charged with endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and escape.
