Burgettstown Suspect Surrenders In Shooting Of Daughter's Ex-Boyfriend
BURGETTSTOWN (KDKA) – A man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of his daughter's ex-boyfriend in Washington County in April has surrendered to police.
James Bongiorni, a one-time police chief, is now facing charges of homicide.
"A pillar of the community, no prior record, 68-years-old," said defense attorney Bob Del Greco. "It's a sad day when an individual with that life and that good reputation faces a criminal homicide charge."
The shooting happened in Burgettstown in April.
Brian Wilbert, 38, was shot one time at his ex-girlfriend's home. He died a short time later.
Police reports indicate Bongiorni came to the house concerned about threats to his daughter, then got into a confrontation with Wilbert.
After the shooting, Bongiorni allegedly told witnesses, "I'm going to jail."
"On April 27, he's presented with a situation where an individual with an extensive criminal history, with a notorious reputation for crimes of violence, with a murder threat and a knife, presents himself to Mr. Bongiorni, and Mr. Bongiorni shot him one time in the stomach in self-defense," said Del Greco.
Defense attorneys say Bongiorni worried Wilbert was going to hurt him or his daughter.
Bongiorni is being held in the Washington County Jail.
