Police: Bank Robbery Suspect Tried To Elude Them On Stolen ATV

SOMERSET, Pa. (KDKA) -- State Police say a bank robbery suspect used a stolen ATV as a getaway vehicle to try and elude capture; however, he wasn't able to get very far.

Investigators say when a hooded assailant robbed the Somerset Trust Bank on County Line Road; it was hardly a pro at work.

"I would think that this was one of the more poor planned robberies that you would run across," said Trooper Steve Limani, of Pennsylvania State Police.

According to state police in Somerset County, the suspect - identified as 27-year-old Shawn Grimm of Connellsville - was hardly inconspicuous.

"The fact you have somebody that walks in in the middle of summertime in a hooded sweatshirt and the hood pulled up over their head would be a clear indicator that there's a high likelihood there's going to be a crime that's committed," said Trooper Limani. "He has a plastic bag over his hand, and in that hand he's also holding a knife. He approaches the teller and asks her to give him all the money that's in the register."

Fumbling around with his bag, troopers say Grimm couldn't even hold on to the take.

"On the way out of the bank, he actually drops the cash," Trooper Limani said.

Once out of the bank, surveillance video shows that Grimm had a rather unique getaway vehicle waiting.

"It's a Polaris Razor Side by Side with a roll cage," said Trooper Limani.

Which is, in essence, a very expensive ATV. But the vehicle didn't get him very far.

"About 30 minutes, we had him in handcuffs," Trooper Limani said.

Driving down Pritts Road, Grimm noticed some state troopers, and they noticed him also.

"They were in the driveway and saw this vehicle approaching and were able to flag him down and stop him," Trooper Limani said.

Troopers say Grimm stopped but decided he'd better keep going. That's when troopers used a Taser.

"From there we were able to take him into custody," Trooper Limani said.

Investigators say Grimm had some illegal drugs with him and nearly all of the $55 he allegedly took from the bank. The ATV he was on turned out to be stolen.

"He's saying that he didn't take it," Trooper Limani said.

Grimm faces serious felony charges, including armed robbery. He remains in the Westmoreland County Jail on $100,000 straight cash bond.

Troopers are now trying to figure out who's responsible for stealing that ATV. If you know anything about that, state police want to hear from you.
