Couple, Dog & Pet Snake Escape House Fire Overnight

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- A couple says they have their dog to thank after they escaped a fire in the home late Wednesday night.

The fire started just before midnight at a home on South Cedar Street in the Mahoningtown section of New Castle.

New Castle Assistant Fire Chief Mike Petrone says the fire started in a second floor spare bedroom and crews were able to quickly get the flames under control.

The couple inside and their dog were able to escape, and firefighters rescued a boa constrictor they found in the bathroom. It appeared to have escaped its enclosure and survived the fire.

The man inside the home said he and his girlfriend were asleep on the first floor and woke up to their dog barking.

He says the home was filling with smoke so they couldn't tell what was on fire. He says they eventually tried to put out the flames themselves before calling for help.

They were both treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and then went to stay with family.

Assistant Chief Petrone says he believes there weren't any working smoke detectors in the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
