Hundreds Of Kids Receive School Supplies From National Council Of Jewish Women

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - For many school districts in our area, the start of the school year is one month away.

The National Council of Jewish Women in Pittsburgh has been hard at work to make sure more than 500 local kids have what they need when they head back to class.

"There are so many different things -- fees and supplies. You have to stock everything up. Everyone is growing out of things, and getting into new things, and it's just really amazing that we can have this to give us a little bit of a breather," Ashirah King said.

Hundreds helped to make the second annual event happen.

Funding came from throughout Pittsburgh's corporate community, including companies like Huntington Bank, Giant Eagle and Little Shoes. It also comes from charitable organizations like the Chosky and Buncher Foundations.

"These children are going to get all of the school supplies, clothing, outerwear -- everything they need to begin the school year on an equal footing with their peers so they can feel confident and well prepared on that first day of school," Andrea Glickman, executive director of the Pittsburgh section of the National Council of Jewish Women, said.

It's obvious that this year's event was right on the mark.

"It's so fantastic for her, especially for her. She's starting kindergarten and it's just making the start of the school year exciting for her and really special," King said.
