Neighbor Believes Deadly Carrick Stabbing Was An Accident

CARRICK (KDKA) -- Police say Monica Brown is accused of stabbing her brother in the chest at her Carrick home late Saturday night after she says she felt threatened.  She's here at the Allegheny County Jail charged with homicide.

A makeshift memorial is set up in front of the home where Machi Brown, 27, died late Saturday night.  His sister, Monica Brown, 30, is accused of his murder. Neighbors say they're shocked.

"It's a sad situation," one neighbor said.

This neighbor didn't want to be identified but she knew Monica well.

"She loved her brother. I'm sure this was an accident. I know she didn't mean to do that. She's a good person. A good woman. She took care of her kids. She went to work everyday," one neighbor said.

Police say they were called to Monica's home on Merritt Avenue in Carrick for a report of a stabbing.  When they got to the scene, police found Machi laying in the side door of the house.

According to the criminal complaint, Monica told police her brother had been drinking and that he had slapped his girlfriend in the face, so she confronted him.  That's when she says he came after her and grabbed her by the neck.  She says he wouldn't stop, so she stabbed him once in the shoulder then once in the chest.

"I feel bad for the kids, her brother, her mom. I know she didn't mean to do that. Monica is just not that type of person at all," the neighbor said.

Brown's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.
