Glass Mosaic Of American Flag Helps Bring Veterans & Kids Together

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Local veterans teamed up with kids for a unique art project.

Together, they built a glass mosaic American flag, but the event was about a lot more than just glass and glue.

Piece by piece, military veterans and children crafted the glass American flag.

The 50 by 100-inch work of art was created at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.

"We put this event together to try to both connect veterans with the glass center and also to get kids in the door to learn about glass making at an early age," Conor Lamb said.

Another mission is to bridge the gap between veterans and kids.

While working on the project, the veterans shared stories of their service. They also talked about freedom and the meaning of the American flag.

"It seems like everybody is really enjoying it and I've certainly heard a lot of interesting questions from the kids and also from the adults," Pittsburgh Glass Center's Margaret Spacapan said.

The flag took hours to complete and eventually it will be on display. It may even travel from location to location.

"The flag is a hanging mosaic of glass that can really go anywhere in the community, just like the people who wear the flag on their uniform go anywhere in the world," Lamb said.

While this was the first time for an event like this at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, there are plans to hold similar activities in the future.

The center is taking steps to not only honor, but engage area veterans.

"We're just starting reaching out to the veteran community and we are hoping to continue that. So, right now, we are offering full scholarships for all veterans and we're hoping that that brings a new demographic of people into our building," Spacapan said.
