1 Dead After Port Authority Bus, Car Collide In McCandless

McCANDLESS (KDKA) -- One person is dead and three other people were hospitalized after a Port Authority bus collided with a car head-on Wednesday evening in the North Hills.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Peebles Road and Duncan Avenue in McCandless.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 33-year-old Anthony Ranalli of Gibsonia.

Several witnesses who were in the neighborhood and behind the wheel of their own cars told police that Ranalli's the black vehicle had been swerving as it headed north on Peebles Road.

And in a split second, the head-on crash left the intersection littered with wreckage.

"I heard the impact, and when I looked up, the black car was sliding my direction and the bus was still going off the street where it landed. So I called 911," said Ed Banks, a witness who tried to help the victims.

Banks was stopped at the intersection of Peebles Road and Parkway Drive when the crash happened. He tried to help Ranalli.

"The doors were locked, so I broke a back window so I could reach through and open the front door and see if the guy was talking, see if he was responsive, try and find a pulse, but there was none," said Banks. "At that point, yes, there was nothing we could do."

According to the Port Authority, three people were on the bus - including the driver. They were taken to a local hospital to be checked out.

Banks said the passengers were screaming and extremely shaken, but seemed to be okay physically. Fortunately, none were seriously injured.

"Went over to the bus, got into the bus and the three people in the bus were moving around, they were up and about," he said.

Now investigators are working to pinpoint exactly what caused the deadly crash.

"It's going to take a while. We have a reconstructionist on scene," said Chief Gary Anderson, of McCandless Police. "Reconstruction generally takes several days if not more. We'll know, but we don't know right now."

Crews had to close down Peebles Road from Duncan Avenue to Remington Drive for several hours while authorities completed their investigation and cleared the scene.

The bus was towed away just before 11 p.m., and crews were getting ready to clear the scene soon after.

Port Authority Police are investigating the crash.

An autopsy will be completed on Ranalli on Thursday.
