Report: Mystery Of Shiny Object Spotted In Sky Solved

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A mysterious object spotted in the skies over parts of the Pittsburgh area caused quite a stir Thursday evening.

People reported seeing a shiny, silver object in the sky. The reports were coming from areas west of downtown.

According to the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, the object was a high-altitude balloon launched as part of Google's Project Loon.

The balloon apparently was launched from Washington state and drifted over Pittsburgh at "just the right time to be illuminated by the last of the sun's rays as the sky was getting dark."

Regardless of explanation, people said Thursday they were very intrigued by the object.

"It stood out because it was before dusk and so the stars weren't out yet, so it just really caught our eye," Russ Moll said. "You noticed it as being something out of the ordinary."
