The Jayhawks last game of last season didn’t go so well as they were blown out of Heinz Field, 40-0, by Class A powerhouse Clairton.
That game, however, was about the only thing that didn’t go well for the Jayhawks as they went 11-2 and then won three playoff games en route to that championship game.
Clairton is the odds on favorite to repeat as champions but the Jayhawks believe they have enough firepower this year to get over that last hurdle and dethrone the mighty Bears.
The Jayhawks did graduate a lot of starters on both sides of the ball but they do return quarterback Gio Vonne Sanders, who is also one of the Jayhawks best defensive players.
Sanders should again lead an explosive offense that as he has a great running back-receiver combination in Kareem Hall, who led the team in rushing yards last year, and Mark Wormack.
Eric Hall is an excellent two-way lineman and Wormack also is a defensive stalwart who anchors the linebacker corps.
Jeannette is obviously one of the best programs in the WPIAL one of the best teams in Class A – but they will likely have to beat Clairton in the last week of the season just to win their conference title.
And that game could very well be a preview of a rematch between these two teams in the championship game at Heinz Field a few weeks later.
