PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An accident in the city's West End sent a bicyclist to the hospital in critical condition and shut down busy West Carson Street Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. in the West End, near the ramp to the West Busway, and closed down about a quarter mile stretch of road in both directions.

The bicyclist was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. He has not been identified.

It appears as though the cyclist may have struck the vehicle's passenger-side window after he was struck.

According to emergency officials, West Carson Street was shut down from the West End Circle to Corliss Street. It was shut down for hours after the accident as crews investigated and cleared the scene.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash.
