Teen Shot Near Wood St. T Station Downtown, 16-Year-Old Suspect In Custody

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A teenager is in the hospital, another teen is in police custody and the Wood Street T Station back open in Downtown Pittsburgh after a shooting caused chaos there Tuesday afternoon.

A number of police officers were called to the intersection of 6th and Wood Streets around 4:10 p.m., and they taped off a large section of Downtown for about 45 minutes after reports of a shooting.

Police say the 17-year-old male victim, who has not been identified, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital and he's since been upgraded to stable condition.

Initial reports indicated he had been shot with a pellet gun, but now investigators say he was wounded with a .22 caliber handgun.

Pittsburgh Public Safety officials say the victim was on 6th Street when he was shot, and then ran across to Wood Street and collapsed.

The suspect has been identified as Denzel Glover, 16, of Northview Heights. He is being charged as an adult.

Investigators conducted several interviews after the incident.

Witnesses to the incident described a scene of chaos.

"I just a heard a gunshot and looked over there, and seen a guy fall down," said witness Percy Brown. "I walked over there, took a picture of it until the paramedics got here. They tried to put pressure on his chest to save him. Officers came around two corners with their guns drawn, but the suspect got away."

Sources say police chased the suspected gunman as he tried to run from the scene. He reportedly boarded a bus, but didn't get very far.

According to sources, police radioed the Port Authority who stopped the bus. That's when police got on and arrested the suspect. They found the .22 caliber handgun in his book bag.

Officials say charges against him are yet to be determined.

The Port Authority reopened the Wood Street T Station around 5 p.m., but not before there were long delays for bus riders and T users. They were asking commuters to use other, nearby stops.

In a statement, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said of the incident, in part:

"Details around the incident downtown this afternoon are still being determined. As with the 4th of July shooting and the fights during the Regatta, today's shooting involved teenagers. A 16-year-old male has been arrested and law enforcement officials are gathering information to see if there is a correlation between these three incidents.

"In the meantime, we will be increasing both uniformed and plain clothes officer patrols in critical areas downtown during after school hours. In addition, we are working with Port Authority and Pittsburgh Public Schools police to assist us in protecting everyone downtown and lessen the chance of retaliatory action.

"I commend the Pittsburgh Police, Port Authority Police and all other law enforcement officials who responded to today's incident and subsequent investigation in a timely and effective manner."
