Mother To Testify Against Boyfriend In Toddler's Beating Death

EASTON, Pa. (AP/KDKA) - An eastern Pennsylvania mother has pleaded guilty to child endangerment and agreed to testify against her ex-boyfriend in the beating death of her toddler daughter.

Twenty-eight-year-old Heather Surget entered the plea Friday in Northampton County as part of a deal that includes a time-served sentence allowing her release from jail.

Thirty-two-year-old Gary Foley Jr. is charged with beating 17-month-old Kannah Drew in February 2015 while Surget worked at a fast-food restaurant.

According to the Morning Call, Foley told police the child choked on a piece of hot dog and he saw dark fluid coming from her nose and mouth. However, an autopsy revealed a significant fracture to the back of the girl's head, and a doctor later concluded the head trauma occurred shortly before her death.

Defense attorney Tyree Blair said Surget wanted to accept responsibility and didn't want to stay in prison because she is pregnant.

Prosecutors said Surget and her four children lived in an unheated, garbage-strewn trailer. Surget said she couldn't afford to live elsewhere although the conditions "did bother" her.
