Inbound Liberty Bridge, Tunnel Closed Through Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- In a steady rain the crews from Fay Construction were working Friday on the finishing touches on the Liberty Bridge ahead of Friday night's closing of the inbound bridge and tunnel so they can spend the weekend removing the barriers, painting the lines adjusting the overhead signals.
Come Monday morning, all restrictions on the bridge lanes will be gone.
"You will have two lanes as you have had there will be chance of splits, and in the outbound we will have three lanes in the outbound direction and one lane inbound," said PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna.
That's not to say the work is done. As you drive the bridge now it almost has a wave runner or ski mogul feel.

"We do come back next year per contract to put a latex overlay on the entire structure. That's over a five weekend period," said Fay Construction Vic President of Operations Dennis Watkins.
That finishing work will level out the driving surface.
There is still a lot of work to come on the bridge but anything that impacts traffic will be outside the rush hours. It's back to all driving lanes Monday.
As for the liquidated penalties that Fay construction will face, the contractor and PennDOT sat down and ran the numbers and it comes to about $3 million that PennDOT won't be paying Fay when this project is completed.
