City Controller's Office Holding Thousands Of Dollars In Unclaimed Funds

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Is the City of Pittsburgh holding money for you?

Officials say more than $91,000 is about to be sent to Harrisburg if the city can't locate the owners. City Controller Michael Lamb says the amounts range from $5 to over $9,000.

You work hard for your money; you pay your taxes, so why would you let the City of Pittsburgh keep money that belongs to you?

"For the most part, if it's private citizens, it's typically because they failed to cash a check that was issued as a tax return," Lamb says.

The city's controller has a list of about 1,000 people or businesses that are owed money by the City of Pittsburgh dating back to 2013.

Most amounts are less than $250, but some are substantial, like Albanese Properties with unclaimed funds totaling almost $9,800, and John and Pam Hendricks with $8,000, as well as UPMC at almost $7,400, and the list goes on.

"We've issued a refund to someone or we've made a vendor payment to someone, and for whatever reason, the check never got negotiated," Lamb said.

The check never was cashed.

"The money is still there and the money still belongs to them. We are required to hold it for a period of time, and then send it up to Harrisburg to the state," Lamb said. "We'd like to get it in their hands now."

The 2013 money will be shipped to Harrisburg in January. After that, you'll have to go to the state to get it.

The quickest way to find out is to visit the City Controller's office website at this link. It'll ask you to put in your name or your business's name and then it will do a search.
