With Election 2 Weeks Away, Experts Say Voters Should Understand Their Rights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The countdown to the general election has reached the two-week mark.

It's important to know that some things may have changed since the last time you voted.

Whitney Hughes, of the Allegheny County Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service, says depending on your circumstances, you may need to have a photo identification.

"We have heard a lot about that, but you are not required to. The only exception to that is if it is your first time voting, or your first time voting at that particular polling place," Hughes said.

If you have moved and are voting in a new precinct, it's a good idea to have something else that can verify your home address.

"In lieu of an ID, something that has your name and address on it so a government issued check, if you have a Social Security check, a utility bill, anything showing that you live where you say you live and that you are entitled to vote there," she said.

Voter turnout is typically higher during the presidential election cycle, so make sure you know your rights on election night.

"If it is a ridiculously long line and you are at the end of that line, and it seems like it is going to take you a couple hours to get through, and it's 7:58, you are still entitled to vote. So, you need to stay there and make sure you vote," Hughes said.

Voting for the first time can be intimidating, too. Hughes advises to be ready to vote before getting into the booth.

"Voting is hard work. You have to educate yourself. You have to know the issues, the candidates. It's just another thing people have to do, and I think it is a good thing. We want people to know more. The more you know the better," Hughes said.
