Flying Cash Catches Eye Of Motorists In Butler Co.
BUTLER (KDKA) – It was a common mistake that proved costly.
Butler Township Police say a woman withdrew thousands of dollars from the Dollar Bank on New Castle Road in Butler. While she was getting into her car in the parking lot, she put the money in an envelope and her cell phone on top of her vehicle.
"She drove away, not realizing she left it on top of the car, less than a quarter of a mile down the road the phone and money fell off, she kept on driving," said Butler Township Lt. Matthew Pearson.
Someone ran over the envelope after it fell off her car it burst open and bills were flying everywhere. Drivers stopped their cars, jumped out and began gathering the money.
"We did have several people stop and begin collecting the money for the most part they were Good Samaritans," Lt. Pearson said.
Police say about 95 percent of the cash was retrieved and given back to the woman. But, someone grabbed an undetermined amount and drove away. Police are looking for a man driving a maroon SUV.
"He knew the money belonged to somebody it didn't belong to him," Lt. Pearson said. "You do have a duty to turn that back to the owner if you don't know who the owner is you turn that back to police."
