Community Remembers Pregnant Woman Killed By Estranged Husband

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police say 28-year-old Dalia Sabae was shot and killed by her estranged husband on Nov. 10, she was pregnant with their son.

He also shot two Canonsburg police officers as they responded to the domestic call. Officer Scott Bashioum was killed, Officer James Saieva was wounded.

"Scott Bashioum and Jimmy Saieva are great guys, but we didn't want her to be lost," said Joseph Salandra.

The mayor of Canonsburg, several police officers and the widow of fallen Officer Bashioum all came to Salandra Funeral Home to pay their respects. All of Dalia's former co-workers at Jeffrey's Pharmacy were also present.

"I knew her since she started working at the pharmacy," said co-worker Mark Turon. "Just a wonderful person, very nice person, just tragic what happened."

Dalia is from Egypt and her family will not be attending her service.

A victim of domestic violence, her funeral expenses are being covered by Jeffrey's Pharmacy, the funeral home and a special fund from the Washington District Attorney's Office.

"We all wish that we could have figured out a way to help her more. In the long run, the only person to blame is the abuser in this case," said Maggie Novotny, with Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Last year, nearly 500 Protection from Abuse Orders (PFAs) were filed in Washington County. Dalia had filed one against her estranged husband.

"She was a victim of domestic violence, we don't want to forget our own," said Mayor David Rhome.

And forget her, they are not. At night fell over Canonsburg Thursday, the light beam projecting into the night sky that had been blue in honor of Officer Bashioum turned purple for Dalia. Purple to raise awareness for domestic violence victims.
