Jeannette Firefighters Use Helmet Cams To Show Obstacles, Dangers Of Fighting Fires
JEANNETTE (KDKA) -- A fire was so intense and so difficult to fight in Westmoreland County, the Jeannette Fire Department wanted everyone to see what they were up against.
Two firefighters wore helmet cams and the video was posted to YouTube.
Fire Chief Vance Phillips says, "It was a row house unit, so it had units on each side of it."
One house attached to the unit was occupied, the other was not. There were no injuries, but it was a tough blaze to fight nonetheless.
"The unit had multiple couches and debris located inside, and was being used as somewhat of a storage unit. Just to get to the base of the fire, we had to move furniture and remove debris to extinguish it," Chief Phillips said.
The fire, which began minutes before 10:30 p.m. Monday is believed to have started in the kitchen.

Chief Phillips says the helmet cams have proven useful since they began wearing them.
"If we can use them for training, our council and our citizens who support us can see the obstacles and understand the need to clean up issues in the city," he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
