Jubilee Kitchen Serves Up Thanksgiving Dinner For Those In Need

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thanksgiving Day is special at the Jubilee Kitchen, where the needy are treated to a full turkey dinner and the dignity they deserve.

This year, the cadre of volunteers who do the serving includes sidelined Steeler receiver Markus Wheaton -- who won't be playing in Indianapolis tonight but came to the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning.

"I figured I'd step in and try to help where I can," Wheaton said.

He is flanked on all sides by like-minded volunteers like Whitney McFadden and crew who feel the same way.

"We're out here because we wanted to give back to the community," McFadden said. "We wanted to take time out of our Thanksgiving just to come out and help and just see how blessed we are."

Jubilee has support services -- job training and counseling for struggling clients -- as well as a daycare and pre-school for the kids of the working poor.

Hot meals are served every day of the week without fail, but supervisor and cook Mark Saucier says the kitchen makes a special effort on Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving is very important," he said. "Most of these people don't have family around here so it's somewhere for them to go to and sit with a bunch of friends, have a meal and feel comfortable."

And folks like David Cook appreciate that effort.

"It's good that God brings us together and provides us with food like that," Cook said.
