4 Taken Into Custody After Armed Robbery, Standoff In Canonsburg

CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- Four people were taken into custody after an hours long stand off with police and the SWAT team at a home in Washington County Tuesday evening.

Canonsburg Police Chief Alex Coghill says officers responded to a home around 7 p.m. for reports of an armed robbery.

When officers got on scene, they chased the potential robbery suspects into a home along Smith Street. They believed at least one of them was armed.

They called in the Washington County SWAT team when no one would come out of the home.

They also evacuated nearby homes.

"There was a danger," said Chief Coghill. "We quickly evacuated any residences that needed evacuated in the area. So, we were able to secure the neighborhood fairly quick and we eliminated that danger."

Hours later, before 1 a.m. Wednesday, Chief Coghill says the suspects surrendered peacefully.

"When we were checking social media, of course people were saying shots were fired. That was the tear gas canisters being shot off," he said. "There were no shots fired. Nobody was hurt. We had a peaceful resolution. It just took several hours to come to that peaceful resolution."

The four people were taken to the Canonsburg Police Department.

It is unclear what charges they will face at this time.
