Woman Found Fatally Shot On South Side Slopes Street

SOUTH SIDE SLOPES (KDKA) -- A woman was found fatally shot in South Side Slopes early Saturday morning.

Michelle Mercuri, 27, was a stunning woman who's life was cut short around 1:30 Saturday morning. Next door neighbor Derrick Pitts just moved in around 8 p.m. the night before.

"I was just here trying to get settled in and everything then heard a little commotion next door and next thing I know I see a lot of cops outside," Pitts said.

When police responded to the scene, they found Mercuri in the middle of Eccles Street, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. That's where she was pronounced dead. She wasn't far from her home, where another neighbor says she lived with her boyfriend in South Side Slopes. That neighbor, who didn't want to go on camera, says he saw two people running from the scene on his home security camera system. Derrick Pitts said he never heard the sound of gunshots.

"Just screaming. Thought it was maybe a TV or something or an argument. Didn't think much of it," Pitts said.

When police responded to the call, they initially reported there was possibly a robbery. SWAT was also called to the scene, but determined that there was no hostage situation.

"This is the last thing I expected moving in," Pitts said.

KDKA's Amy Wadas spoke to Mercuri's brother over Facebook. He wasn't available to talk on camera Saturday evening. However, he said he looked up to his sister and that she was his role model. He said he wants justice to be served and is asking anyone who might know anything about this shooting to come forward.
