Mom & Daughter Raise Money For Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund

Author: Dave Crawley

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Thursday night marks the 63rd year for the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund benefit show on KDKA-TV. One mom and her daughter are raising money, with a business that has “gone to the dogs.”

Sara Stamos and her 4-year-old daughter came up with a dog treat called Katelyn’s Kookies, as a thank you following the little girl’s successful surgery for a serious heart condition.

“It’s not easy for anyone to come to the hospital and have open heart surgery,” Katelyn’s mother says. “But the doctors here, they were great. The nurses. They took really good care of us. So, I made it a lot more comfortable for our situation, knowing that we had all the support behind us.”

Sara Stamos works as a server at the Eat’n Park in Robinson. In her spare time, she makes doggy biscuits in the shape of canines and dog bones. They’re sold at the Eat’n Park in packets of three for $1. All proceeds go to the Free Care Fund. She says they sold 333 bags last year.

“And I had some customers ask me if I was going to do it again this year, because their dogs just love them so much. So, I brought it back this year, and right now we’re over 1,100 bags. I’ve gotta go make some more tonight,” she said.

Katelyn’s mom says it’s a small price to pay for saving her daughter’s life.

“If you do a little something, it can make a big difference.”
