Boy Scout Advisor In Court On Child Porn Charges

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Christopher Sokiera, 41, showed up for a preliminary hearing in Shaler Thursday morning to answer charges of possessing child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility - and then waived his entire case straight to court.

"There is no point at this point to fight to get anything in the media. It is better to preserve things for downtown and fight it another day," said attorney Frank Walker.

Authorities searched Sokiera's apartment in Shaler back in October and reportedly found at least 90 images of both boys and girls, including toddlers as well as naked pictures of himself. Sokiera told police he worked as an advisor for a local Boy Scout troop and has gone on scout camping excursions.

Terms of his bail prohibit any contact with children.

"He is not connected to scouting, he is not working. He is spending time with his family and getting whatever counseling he may need," Walker said.

The Pittsburgh office of the Boy Scouts released a statement several weeks ago detailing Sokiera's immediate release from the Boy Scouts in any capacity. His attorney said his client will wait for his next court date, scheduled for February.

"It has an impact psychologically . He is facing the legal system for the first time. He has never been in trouble before so this is an issue where its not common to him."
