Poor Weather Conditions Delay Public Transportation, Knock Out Power

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Freezing rain hit the Pittsburgh area early Saturday morning, causing transportation and power problems throughout the region.

An overhead T line in the South Hills was down due to ice early Saturday morning. Red and blue line trains didn't start running until just after 11 a.m., about 6 hours after the first trains usually leave on Saturdays. Red and blue line service will follow the regular Saturday schedule for the rest of the day.

Icy roads also caused some problems for buses, which ran behind schedule early Saturday morning. Some routes were also unable to use side streets. Port Authority advised using their TrueTime system to track buses. They also asked those calling customer service to be patient, as lines were extremely busy.

Because of the poor road conditions, the speed limit for the entire Pennsylvania Turnpike was reduced to 45 miles per hour for several hours, starting around 8 a.m. Posted speed limits were restored around 1 p.m.

Ice didn't just knock down the T line. It also knocked down trees and tree limbs throughout the region, many of which knocked out power. Duquesne Light reported just before 11:15 a.m. that about 4,500 customers were without power, and crews were making repairs.

As of 2 p.m., about 4,000 customers were still without power. Duquesne Light reported around 8:30 p.m. that less than 100 customers were still without power, and the majority were expected to be restored by midnight.
