Man Dies After Being Struck By Vehicle In Aspinwall

ASPINWALL (KDKA) -- A man died after being hit by a vehicle in Aspinwall on Tuesday evening.

Officials say the accident happened around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of Freeport Road and Western Avenue.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the victim as 63-year-old Robert Ninehouser of Aspinwall. They say he died of blunt force trauma of the head, neck, pelvis and right lower extremity.

According to Aspinwall Police Chief David Caplan, there is nothing suspicious about the accident and it was not a hit and run. Instead, Chief Caplan is calling it a tragic situation.

"It was dark, as well as raining a little. It was difficult to see," said Chief Caplan.

Allegheny County Police say the victim had just gotten off a bus and was waiting with several other people to cross the street.

Witnesses told police that man "appeared unbalanced" and "suddenly darted across the street." He was hit by an oncoming car and severely injured.

"For some reason, this man stepped in front of the car," Chief Caplan said.

Ninehouser was taken to UPMC St. Margaret's Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver, a woman, did remain at the scene and was questioned by Aspinwall Police as well as Allegheny County homicide detectives.

She is not expected to face any charges.

The road was closed immediately after the accident while officials investigated, and reopened late Tuesday night.
