Overturned Tractor-Trailer Slows Traffic On Parkway North

OHIO TOWNSHIP (KDKA) --- A tractor-trailer overturned early Tuesday morning on the Parkway North.

The truck crashed on the inbound lanes near Mount Nebo Road shortly before 1:30 a.m. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash. State police say no one was injured.

Officials say that's thanks to a safety measure put in place a few years ago.

"We made a conscious decision in 2008 to close off all our medians to prevent cross-over crashes," said Todd Kravits, a PennDOT engineer.

Cable median barriers sprouted up everywhere, including the location where this accident happened. The truck got tangled in the barrier, stopping it from crossing over into opposing lanes of traffic.

"Slow it down, envelop that vehicle and snag it, so to speak, very softly to prevent the vehicle from crossing over the median and prevent a high impact crash," said Kravits.

Inbound traffic was reduced to a single lane at the crash scene. It took a couple of hours to clear the scene and allow traffic to flow again.

The cable median was also repaired at the scene.
