PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A 17-year-old male has died after being shot in the face Tuesday night in Bethel Park.

Allegheny County homicide investigators believe the incident started as a drug deal.

According to the criminal complaint, 17-year-old Nathan Assad allegedly set up a drug deal with the suspect, 16-year-old Nathan Lee.

A witness says when Lee came to the door of the home in the 400 block of Lucy Drive, he stole the marijuana and a gold chain.

Lee allegedly got in the passenger's seat of a getaway car and took off.

That's when the witness got behind the wheel of their car with Assad in the passenger's seat. The two followed Lee onto McAnulty Road.

Near the intersection of Horning Road, the witness told investigators they saw Lee lean out of the passenger's side window with a gun and fire at least three shots.

The witness turned onto Horning Road and went less than a mile into Baldwin Borough, when they realized Assad had been shot in the face.

They pulled off at the intersection of Cedar Drive and flagged someone down to call 911 around 8:15 p.m.

Assad was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he died just before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Police spent most of the overnight hours casing the scene.

Al Hutching lives nearby and said his daughter was getting ready to leave the house at the time.

"I [saw] all the cops out here last night. They blocked the street off, had the tape right here. They were out searching out in my yard, you know, looking for blood stains I guess. That's what they said they were looking for," Hutching said.

Police took Lee into headquarters for questioning, where he reportedly told investigators that it was Assad who tried to rob him.

"When you get conflicting stories, conflicting information, trying to piece it together as to where it actually happened and how it might have happened," Baldwin Police Chief Michael Scott said.

Lee reportedly admitted that he did lean out the window and fire the gun at Assad's car.

He is facing a list of charges including, criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and possession of a firearm by a minor. He will be charged as an adult in the case.
