Jordan Staal’s goal at 6:27 in the first period put the Penguins up 1-0. However, that was the Penguins’ only goal for the night.

Late in the second period, Anaheim’s Correy Perry tied it. Then Teemu Selanne made it 2-1 in the third for the game-winner.

Marc-Andre Fleury had 27 saves.

The Penguins were 0 for 1 on the power play.

Evgeni Malkin, the NHL’s leading scorer, was held pointless for the second time this month, and his eight-game goal streak at home ended, too.

After struggling to score goals recently, the Penguins lit the lamp a combined 12 times in wins over the Winnipeg Jets and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The wins helped the Penguins move up the standings and gain ground within the Atlantic Division.

Currently the Penguins are tied with the Philadelphia Flyers for second in the division. While both clubs have 69 points, the Flyers own the tiebreaker with move regulation and overtime wins.

Both clubs are trailing the New York Rangers by 10 points and are ahead of the New Jersey Devils by one point.

If the playoffs began today, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia would meet in the first round.

Of course, the playoffs don’t start today and there’s a lot of hockey yet to be played beginning tonight against the Ducks.

The Ducks have struggled for most of the season, but have been playing better lately under new head coach Bruce Boudreau.

In their last 10 games, the Ducks are 6-2-2 and have not suffered a regulation loss since Feb. 1.

In the month of February, Anaheim is 4-1-2 and has won their last two games.

Last night, the Ducks trailed 1-0 heading to the third period against the Minnesota Wild. Goals by Niklas Hagman and Corey Perry powered the Ducks to a 2-1 win.

Jonas Hiller (20-19-9, 2.72 GAA, .907 save percentage) made 17 saves to earn his 20th win of the season.

It’s unknown if Hiller will get the nod for a second straight game tonight against the Penguins. In three career starts against Pittsburgh, Hiller is 1-2 with a 3.71 GAA and an .875 GAA.

For Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin continued his hot streak with two goals against the Lighting, giving him 69 points on the year.

He now has a seven-point lead over Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos in the NHL scoring race.

James Neal is one goal away from cracking the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career. His current total of 29 goals is already a career-high.

In 14 career games against the Ducks, Neal has two goals and nine assists.

Marc-Andre Fleury (29-13-3, 2.35 GAA, .911 save percentage) was given the day off on Sunday against the Lighting, but would be the likely candidate to get back between the pipes tonight.

Fleury is 4-1 against the Ducks with a 2.62 GAA and a .890 save percentage.

Caufield can’t stop raving about the play of Evgeni Malkin, then previews tonight’s game against the Ducks at Consol Energy Center.

Both games are on the road.

Asham has been out since Jan. 15. He was hit with an elbow Jan. 11 at Washington and discovered concussion symptoms days later.

Asham said after Tuesday’s practice — his first with teammates since suffering the injury — that he feels good and it’s just a matter of conditioning now to get back into the lineup.

“Head-wise and confidence-wise I feel good,” Asham said. “It’s a matter of getting my legs under me. I’ll get a couple of good skates here this week and hopefully be ready for the weekend.

“I’m practicing and taking little steps from there. I’m planning on being ready for the weekend. It’s just a matter of the coaches feel confident enough to have me in or if I can crack the lineup. The team’s playing pretty good right now. I have to get my hands and timing back, getting ready for the weekend.”

The concussion was Asham’s second in as many years.

“Last year was my first one and I was laying at home not knowing what was going on,” he said. “This one I knew what to expect and I’m feeling good now. I’m ready to play my game and play the way I can.”

A lot of players credit Orpik with stepping up and being a leader when the team needed it most this year, and Brooks said that some players were cutting corners and spending a little too much time worrying about their social life, but luckily they were able to re-prioritize and get their focus back on hockey.

Brooks also talked about Sidney Crosby being out of the lineup and how much the team thinks about when, if at all, he may rejoin the team this season, and how that affects them.

With the season more than halfway over and the trade deadline approaching, Brooks gave his thoughts on making another Cup run and how far he sees this year’s team going.

Malkin had three goals and five assists last week in three games. He was a plus-6 in those three games.

The highlight of Malkin’s week was a five-point outing against Winnipeg Saturday afternoon. He scored one goal and assisted on four others in an 8-5 Penguins victory.

Malkin followed that effort up with two goals in a comeback win against Tampa Bay Sunday night.

Malkin leads the NHL with 69 points and is second in goals with 32.

According to the team’s official website, the Penguins have activated defenseman Simon Despres from the injured reserve list.

He will not be rejoining the parent club at the moment, as he was assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

The 20-year-old defenseman has appeared in 14 games with the Penguins and has a goal and three assists. He also has a plus-four rating.

Despres has been out of the lineup since suffering a knee injury in a game against the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 10.

On Saturday, the Penguins welcomed Jordan Staal back to the lineup after missing 15 games with a knee injury.

At the moment, Sidney Crosby (concussion-like symptoms), Arron Asham (concussion) and Tyler Kennedy are out for the Penguins.

Both Crosby and Asham have resumed skating before the team’s practices, but there is no timeline for their return.

Kennedy is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain against the Devils on Jan. 5.

Home is also where the goals are for Evgeni Malkin.

He continues to dominate and he increased his home goal-scoring streak Sunday to eight consecutive games, which is just three behind Mario Lemieux’s 11 straight games back in 1996.

Just like they did against the Winnipeg Jets Saturday, the Pens fell behind by two early but managed to fight back for a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang also scored for the Penguins. And backup goalie Brent Johnson made 21 saves in the win.

For Tampa Bay, Steve Downie scored both goals and Mathieu Garon made 37 saves in a losing effort.

Steven Stamkos, the NHL’s leading goal scorer, was held pointless and mustered just one shot against Johnson. The Lightning’s star came in with 10 points during a six-game point streak.

The Penguins’ top defensive pairing of Letang and Brooks Orpik held the high-scoring Stamkos in check once again but briefly had trouble containing Downie.

The blue collar forward came in with only nine goals this season before beating Johnson twice on the same shift. Downie took advantage of a turnover then fired a slapshot that handcuffed Johnson to put Tampa Bay on the board. He lit the lamp again 11 seconds later, tapping in a pass from Teddy Purcell on the doorstep to make it 2-0 halfway through the first period.

The flurry seemed to wake up Malkin.

It was his power-play goal, a bomb from the right circle that sailed over Garon, with less than four minutes to go in the first that got the Pens going.

Kunitz tied it at 2 early in the second when the Lightning became so focused on Malkin they let Kunitz race down the middle of the ice practically uncontested.

He beat Garon with a backhand and the Penguins were off to the races.

Boucher tried to calm things down, calling a timeout in hopes the Lightning would catch their breath.

But Letang put Pittsburgh in front 29 seconds later on a perfect feed from Kunitz, who later assisted Malkin for an easy tap-in goal.

It was all the offense Johnson would need. The veteran had lost each of his previous four starts, raising concerns about Pittsburgh’s goaltending depth as the postseason slowly approaches.

While Johnson wasn’t spectacular, he was steady, which is about all the Penguins need these days considering the way the offense is humming.

The last time Tampa Bay visited the CONSOL Energy Center it walked out with a win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

That Penguin team, however, was struggling to score without Malkin and Crosby, both sidelined with injuries. Crosby is again on the injured reserve due to concussion-like symptoms, but Pittsburgh is getting by just fine without its captain.

Malkin kept the Lightning from creeping above .500 for the first time since Nov. 28. Tampa Bay came in 7-1-2 in its last 10 games to show signs of getting back in the playoff chase, but couldn’t keep up with the Penguins turned up the pressure.

Now, they will look to keep the momentum going tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Pittsburgh fell behind 2-0 early, but four unanswered goals by Dustin Jeffrey, James Neal, Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang put the Penguins ahead for good.

Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Richard Park also scored for the Penguins.

The win over the Jets vaulted the Penguins over New Jersey in the standings and pulled them within two points of the Flyers.

Malkin finished the game with a goal and four assists to give him 67 points this season. He is now five points ahead of Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos in the NHL scoring race.

His goal was also the 30th of the season

Speaking of Tampa Bay, they enter tonight’s contest on a high note having earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

Mathieu Garon (17-13-4, 2.85 GAA, .902 save percentage) stopped 26 shots to make first period goals by Steve Downie and Stamkos hold up.

In addition to leading his team in points with 62, Stamkos is leading the league in goals with 37.

Martin St. Louis is second on the team in points with 50 (16 goals, 34 assists).

Vincent Lecavalier seems to be back on track this season with 45 points (21 goals, 24 assists) in 54 games.

Currently, the Lightning (24-24-6, 54 points) are eight points out of a playoff spot. Their main struggles this season appear to be in goal.

Dwayne Roloson is only 7-11-2 with a 3.62 GAA and a .881 save percentage this season.

It is unknown if Roloson or Garon will be in net against the Penguins at this point.

Against Pittsburgh, Roloson is 5-5-2 with a 3.15 GAA and .900 save percentage, while Garon is 1-2 with a 4.88 GAA and .867 save percentage.

For Pittsburgh, it is not yet known if Marc-Andre Fleury (29-13-3, 2.35 GAA, .911 save percentage) will start on back-to-back days or if Brent Johnson (2-6-2, 3.10 GAA, .885 save percentage) will get the nod tonight.

Against Tampa Bay, Fleury is 10-10-3 with a 2.43 GAA and .910 save percentage, while Johnson is 7-2-2 with one tie to go along with a 2.52 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

If history holds true, Malkin may very well add to his point total tonight.

In 20 career games against Tampa Bay, Malkin has nine goals and 10 assists.

Nine of those assists came on the power play.

This will be the third meeting between the teams this season. The teams split the previous two games in Tampa Bay.

The Bolts won 4-1 on Nov. 17 and the Penguins won the most recent game 6-3 on Jan. 15.

Evgeni Malkin, playing in his 400th regular-season game, once again led the way for the Penguins. He tallied a goal and four assists, adding to his NHL-leading point total.

It was also a memorable night for Richard Park who scored his 100th career NHL goal, as well as Kris Letang who had two goals and an assist and Jordan Staal who had a goal and an assist in his first game back from injury.

“It was a wide-open game, and you know, obviously, we wanted to play a little bit of a tighter game,” Staal said. “We kind of gave them one too many chances to get back in the game and we obviously did a great job offensively … but we have to play better defensively if we want to keep winning like that.”

James Neal, Chris Kunitz and Dustin Jeffery also scored for the Pens.

Kyle Wellwood, Alexander Burmistrov, Tim Stapleton, Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little had goals for Winnipeg.

It was a less than memorable night both goaltenders though.

The Jets’ Ondrej Pavelec stopped just 31 of 39 shots, and the Pens’ Marc-Andre Fleury wasn’t much sharper, stopping 20 of 25 shots.

The Jets raced out to a 2-1 lead barely eight minutes into the game on goals by Wellwood and Burmistrov.

But Burmistrov’s 10th goal of the season seemed to wake up the Penguins, who responded behind the brilliant play of Malkin.

Jeffery got the Pens first goal with assists from Staal and Letang.

Then, Malkin set up Neal’s 29th goal by flipping a faceoff back to Neal at the top of the circle to tie the game at 2.

Early in the second, Malkin fed Kunitz — with a secondary assist from Fleury — to put the Pens in front. He jumpstarted a 2-on-1 break midway through the second period that ended with Letang scoring his sixth of the season.

Malkin then netted his 30th of the season on a breakaway late in the second period by deking his way past a sprawled Pavelec.

The Jets drew within 5-4 early in the third period when Byfuglien beat Fleury with a wrist shot, but Park pushed the Pens back in front by two when he deflected Brooks Orpik’s shot from the point by Pavelec.

The forward, a 14-year veteran, raised his arms in triumph after reaching the 100-goal milestone.

Park’s goal was a pleasant surprise, but the Penguins hope Staal’s return would help take some pressure off the line of Malkin, Neal and Kunitz.

Staal, who hadn’t played since Jan. 6 due to a left knee injury, scored his first since Dec. 29 in the third period after Dupuis stripped a Winnipeg player and fed Staal in the slot.

The Penguins don’t have much time to enjoy the win. The Tampa Bay Lightning come to town next for a game at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Jordan Staal, who has missed the last 15 games due to a knee injury, will look to help the team snap a two-game losing streak.

In 34 games this season, Staal has 15 goals and six assists.

On Tuesday, the Penguins lost 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in a marathon shootout. Pascal Dupuis and James Neal scored for the Penguins in the game.

The Penguins are currently sitting in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. However, they are only one point behind the New Jersey Devils and four points behind the Philadelphia Flyers.

As for their opponent today, the Jets come into the game having won their last two games. On Thursday, they stunned the Capitals with two late third period goals to force overtime and eventually won in a shootout.

The Jets (26-24-6, 58 points) are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference and are just four points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for the eighth and final spot.

Blake Wheeler is leading the way with 36 points (10 goals, 26 assists), while Evander Kane is leading the team in goals with 19.

In goal, Ondrej Pavelec (20-18-6, 2.68 GAA, .913 save percentage) has won four of his last five starts and has allowed more than two goals only once over that span.

However, he has not performed well against the Penguins in his career. In 9 starts, Pavelec is 1-8 with a 4.16 GAA and a .872 save percentage.

For Pittsburgh, Evegni Malkin’s assist on Neal’s goal against the Canadiens kept him on top of the NHL scoring race.

Malkin’s 62 points (29 goals, 33 assists) are one better than Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux.

It is also worth noting that Neal’s goal was his 28th of the season, which set a new career-high.

Staal has enjoyed some success against the Jets’ franchise in his career having scored eight goals in 18 games. He also has three assists over that span.

However, Malkin has torched the Jets in the past. In 20 career games, Malkin has 10 goals and 19 assists with four goals and eight assists coming on the power play.

In goal, Marc-Andre Fleury (28-13-3, 2.29 GAA, .913 save percentage) has also enjoyed success against the Jets in his career.

In 18 appearances, Fleury is 13-5 with a 2.18 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

Staal collided with former teammate and New York Ranger Mike Rupp on January 6 and he has been out of commission since.

Head coach Dan Bylsma says Staal won’t play a full 20 minutes, but will see significant time on the ice on Saturday when the Pens take on the Winnipeg Jets at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Staal was on pace to post career highs in goals and points. His 15 goals still rank him third on the team even though he’s missed the last 15 games.

The Penguins hope Staal can breathe some life into an offense that isn’t getting much production outside of Evgeni Malkin and James Neal.

Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby skated for about an hour before practice as he continues his comeback from concussion-like symptoms. There remains no timetable for his return.

Staal was forced to leave practice  after taking a stick to the face. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Staal received stitches and should be fine. He is a candidate to return to the lineup Saturday against Winnipeg, and the demotions of Jason Williams and Colin McDonald have many expecting Staal will be back this weekend.

Despres left practice midway through for unknown reasons only to return and finish the session.

According to the Penguins’ website, Kennedy has a high-ankle sprain.

Kennedy was injured on Sunday during the Penguins 5-2 loss against the New Jersey Devils.

When he was hurt, the Penguins were in the middle of a four-game road trip.

While the team headed for Montreal, where they finished their trip with a 3-2 shootout loss, Kennedy returned to Pittsburgh have his leg evaluated.

Kennedy will be out for about four to six weeks, according to the team’s website. Head coach Dan Bylsma said they will have a “better idea of what the time frame looks like” over the next week or so.

According to a statement from the Penguins, forwards Jason Williams and Colin McDonald have been sent back down to the team’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

In eight games with the Penguins this season, Williams has recorded one goal and one assist. McDonald has not found the score sheet in five games.

Jordan Staal, Sidney Crosby and Simon Despres have been progressing in their recoveries from varying injuries.

Earlier this week, head coach Dan Bylsma said that Staal and Despres were about five to 10 days away from returning.

Both are dealing with knee injuries and returned to practice this week.

Staal suffered his injury in a collision with former Penguins Mike Rupp in a game against the New York Rangers on Jan. 6.

Officials with the company say they purchased additional steel from the arena roof and have added a number of items to the collection.

In a press release, Will Knecht, the president of Wendell August, said: “We had fans lined up outside our store hours before opening and sold out of the ornaments in just days. Customers have been asking for additional merchandise to be created from the roof, and in response to that demand, we were able to secure additional steel from the Civic Arena roof, which enabled us to expand on the collection.”

The new merchandise includes items like coaster sets, bookmarks, mugs, wine toppers and paperweights.

Jay liked the Penguins’ energy and loves the play of goaltender Marc Andre Fluery.

As the Penguins march towards the playoffs, Jay believes goaltending will be the biggest factor in how far the Pens go in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After Pittsburgh hit two posts in an eight-round shootout, Tomas Plekanec fired a puck past Fleury for a 3-2 advantage. Jason Williams came on as the Penguins eighth shooter and slipped a puck five hole on Montreal goaltender Carey Price, but he was able to squeeze his feet together and stop the puck to end the game.

“Basically, Flower has been saving us all year,” Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis said.

Fleury was strong in goal all night and helped the team force overtime. However, it was his lone gaffe that changed the complexion of the game.

After Joe Vitale threw a puck that bounced off Dupuis’ skate and in to tie the game, Montreal forward Lars Eller swung down the left wing and threw a puck deep into the Penguins zone. Fleury, expecting the puck to go into the corner, took a step one way before realizing Eller’s dump was on net.

Fleury’s split-second mistake was too much to overcome and the puck slipped past him and inside the far post for a 2-1 Canadiens lead with 17 minutes left in regulation.

Evgeni Malkin found James Neal in front for his 28th goal of the season — a career high — less than five minutes later to tie the game, 2-2, but the Pens couldn’t manage another tally the rest of the way.

“It’s a good point, but there’s just areas of our game that we need to clean up,” Neal said. “But ‘Flower’ was great again. Huge saves at the right times. It’s tough when you don’t pull one out in the shootout for him, because he made some great saves.”

Montreal held a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal Louis Leblanc midway through the first period.

Price stopped 32 of 34 Pittsburgh shots in the game. Fleury stopped 28 of 30 shots.

“We did come back and tie it up, had some chances to win in overtime,” Dupuis said. “We got some chances in the shootout. Hit the post there, too, (which would have) won it but it doesn’t go in. They come back and they win. It’s unfortunate.”

While the appearances don’t mean any player is close to returning — morning skates typically involved very little to no contact, allowing injured players to participate — it is another positive sign in each player’s recovery.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Monday that Staal and Despres are in the five-to-10 day range from returning to the lineup.

There is still no timetable on Crosby’s return. He says he is still experiencing symptoms but admits to feeling better over the last week.

• The Penguins recalled forward Jason Williams Tuesday from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He played in Tuesday night’s 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal.
• Forward Colin McDonald dressed in place of winger Tyler Kennedy Tuesday night, who returned to Pittsburgh to have his leg evaluated after suffering an injury Sunday afternoon at New Jersey. There is no word yet on Kennedy’s status.

Currently, the Penguins are 1-2 on the trip and are coming off a 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils Sunday afternoon.

The Penguins have only scored four goals on the trip and were shut out 1-0 by the Maple Leafs in the first game.

Following tonight’s game, Pittsburgh will get a few days off to rest before resuming action against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Devils capitalized on some early mistakes and never looked back. Evgeni Malkin and Matt Niskanen scored the only goals of the game for the Penguins.

Montreal has been struggling all season and enter tonight’s contest with a 4-4-2 record in their last 10 games. They are currently tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for last place in the Eastern Conference.

However, they were able to notch a 3-0 win over the Jets on Sunday. Carey Price (18-19-8, 2.38 GAA, .915 save percentage) stopped 23 shots for his third shutout of the season.

Price is on a little bit of a roll lately, having won three of his last five starts. Since the calendar turned to 2012, Price has only allowed more than three goals on one occasion over a span of 11 games.

Against the Penguins, Price is 7-6-1 with a 2.76 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

On offense, Erik Cole is leading the team in points with 39 (19 goals, 20 assists). Max Pacioretty is right behind him with 38 points and is tied for the team lead in goals with 19.

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the two teams this season. Pittsburgh has won all three of the previous meetings:

• On Oct. 20, the Penguins won 3-1
• On Nov. 26, the Penguins won 4-3 in overtime
• On Jan. 20, the Penguins won 5-4 in a shootout

Malkin continues to lead the league in points with 61 (29 goals, 32 assists) and he has torched the Canadiens in his career.

In 21 career games, Malkin has 11goals and 15 assists including two goals and six assists on the power play.

Marc-Andre Fleury (28-13-2, 2.30 GAA, .912 save percentage) saw his personal nine-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday after allowing three goals on 12 shots against the Devils. He was pulled early in the second period of that game.

Against the Canadiens, Fleury is 13-8-1 with a 3.32 GAA and a .887 save percentage.

The Penguins will be without the services of Tyler Kennedy for an undetermined amount of time after leaving Sunday’s game against the Devils with an apparent leg injury.

Kennedy has returned to Pittsburgh for evaluation and a timeframe for his return has not been determined yet.

According to the Penguins’ official website, Jordan Staal and Simon Despres returned to practice yesterday and head coach Dan Bylsma said they could return over the next five to 10 days.

He is still experiencing some concussion symptoms but has practiced with other injured players and strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar over the last few days. He joined the full team Monday, yet has not been cleared for full-contact practice.

“Sidney Crosby, instead of skating by himself, took the opportunity on the road to practice with the team. There’s no change in his status,” Bylsma said, according to the team’s official website. He added with a smile, “He just would have been lonely all by himself, so he was on the ice with us (Monday).”

Along with concussion symptoms, Crosby was diagnosed with a soft-tissue neck injury Jan. 31.

“I feel like this week’s been good. I feel like I’m getting there,” Crosby said. “I don’t have a timeframe, I wish I did but I don’t. The good news is that there is some progression, with this stuff that’s always what you’re looking for.”

Meanwhile, winger Tyler Kennedy is back in Pittsburgh for evaluation after suffering a leg injury late in the Penguins 5-2 loss at New Jersey Sunday. Bylsma said the team should know more regarding Kennedy’s status in the next day or two.

Other injury news:

• Bylsma said both center Jordan Staal and defenseman Simon Despres could return from injury in the next 10 to 15 days.

New Jersey jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 5-2 win.

Ilya Kovalchuk got the Devils on the board just 2:21 into the first period.

Marc-Andre Fleury went behind the net to play a puck, but couldn’t get a handle on it and it bounced by him. Patrik Elias found Kovalchuk coming late on the play and he fired a low one-timer by Fleury to put New Jersey up 1-0.

About seven minutes later, the Devils’ passing increased the lead.

Alexei Ponikarovsky hit Kovalchuk with a cross-ice pass, which drew Fleury out of the net. Kovalchuk found Anton Volchenkov in the high slot and he fired the puck into a gaping net to put the Devils up 2-0 9:33 into the game.

The Penguins looked flat for much of the period, but managed to outshoot the Devils 11-10 in the first. However, they could not get a puck behind Martin Brodeur.

In the second period, the Penguins were given an early power play chance, which proved to be a turning point in the game.

Paul Martin was unable to keep a puck in the offensive zone. He turned around and raced for it with Kovalchuk hot on his heels. As they closed in on the puck, Kovalchuk reached out with his free hand and appeared to hold up Martin, but nothing was called.

Kovalchuk gained control of the puck and his shot was stopped by Fleury. However, Dainius Zubrus was there for the rebound and chipped it home to put New Jersey up 3-0.

That would be the end of the day for Fleury, who was replaced by Brent Johnson.

Just 34 seconds later, Matt Niskanen ripped a slap shot by Brodeur to capitalize on the power play and keep the Penguins in the game.

However, about eight minutes later Zach Parise’s stuff attempt from the short side found its way through Johnson and put the Devils up 4-1.

Evgeni Malkin recorded another highlight reel goal on Brodeur roughly midway through the third period.

While on the power play, Malkin took control from the left point, closed in on the net, stepped around a prone defenseman and tucked the puck between Brodeur’s legs to cut the deficit to 4-2.

That would be as close as the Penguins would get as the Devils fought off a late charge and David Clarkson added an empty net goal to cap the scoring in the contest.

The Penguins will now head to Montreal for a game Tuesday night against the Canadiens.

Today’s game against the New Jersey Devils will be big in terms of the standings.

Currently, the Penguins are sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, just two points behind the Flyers and just three points ahead of the Devils.

A win today would put some distance between the Penguins and Devils, while putting pressure on the Flyers and Rangers at the top of the Atlantic Division.

On Saturday, Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves to lock down a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins.

Goals by Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke were enough to get the Penguins back on the winning side of things after their eight-game winning streak was snapped earlier this week.

The win extended Fleury’s personal winning streak to nine games.

Pittsburgh got some help from the Devils on Saturday. They beat the Flyers 6-4 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score would suggest.

New Jersey raced out to a 6-0 lead after two periods before the Flyers took control of the third. Philadelphia scored four goals on 24 shots in the third period while limiting the Devils to just one shot.

Former Penguin Johan Hedberg was in goal and made 37 saves in the contest.

Currently, Patrik Elias (18 goals, 32 assists) leads the team in points with 50. High-priced winger Ilya Kovalchuk leads the team in goals with 21 and is only three points behind Elias.

The Penguins also can’t forget about Zach Parise, who has 19 goals and 25 assists this season.

Expect to see Martin Brodeur (16-12-2, 2.77 GAA, .894 save percentage) between the pipes for the Devils this afternoon as well.

Against the Penguins, Brodeur is 44-25-1 with four ties to go along with a 2.42 GAA and a .904 save percentage. He also has nine career shutouts against the Pens.

It remains to be seen if Fleury (28-12-2, 2.25 GAA, will get the nod on consecutive days or if Brent Johnson (2-6-2, 3.20 GAA, .884 save percentage) will get back in the pipes after suffering a 1-0 loss to the Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Against the Devils, Fleury is 12-17-4 with a 2.56 GAA and a .916 save percentage. He also has three shutouts.

Johnson is 2-5-3 against the Devils with a 2.16 GAA and a .924 save percentage.
