Woodley also talked about the injuries he played through last year, saying he was only about 65 or 70 percent in the playoff loss to the Broncos.

Looking towards this season, the predictions for the AFC North have started rolling in, most placing the Steelers third behind the Ravens and Bengals, and LaMarr said the experts always pick them low, and they like it that way.

Woodley also talked about the Saints bounty situation and what he thinks about Jonathan Vilma and the case he’s trying to bring against Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Things wrapped up with LaMarr telling Starkey that he has no concerns running on his injured hamstring and that he’s fully ready to go.

He also says that when he returned to the Steelers, it was so he would have a chance to play next to James Farrior… now he tells Jim he is replacing Farrior.

Defensive end Brett Keisel joined the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, his first appearance at OTAs.

Keisel had missed the opening of OTAs for family reasons.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, linebacker James Harrison, safety Troy Polamalu, cornerback Ike Taylor and wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery were all given the day off.

Additionally, running back Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker Jason Worilds, nose tackle Casey Hampton were out because of injuries.

Wide receiver Mike Wallace didn’t participate, and he’s not expected to for any of the OTAs, as he’s holding out because of a contract dispute.

Draft picks David DeCastro, Mike Adams and Alameda Ta’amu weren’t present either.

Predictably, wide receiver Mike Wallace was not there, and he’s not expected to show up at all as he continues his contract hold out.

Running back Rashard Mendenhall was present but for the second straight day he worked out by himself. He is still rehabbing from ACL surgery.

Mendenhall said there’s no exact timetable slated for his return. However, he said the goal is to be in uniform for Week 1 at Denver.

Linebacker Jason Worilds and defensive end Brett Keisel were not present at OTAs, nor was rookie defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu, who is still in classes at the University of Washington.

Wednesday we found out that Johnson will no longer serve that dual role, as running back Isaac Redman told the media that Johnson has moved specifically to fullback.

Johnson only spends time in meetings with running backs now.

The adjustments to be made throughout the depth chart because of Johnson’s move are not yet known.

It’s just another one of the changes the Steelers are making under new offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

“For me, being in the league a couple of years now, I am picking it up faster than the younger guys,” Redman said. “It’s not too difficult for us. Everybody is out here working together, helping each other out, discussing things so that when the season comes around we should be clicking on all cylinders.”

When it comes to the new offense that Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley is trying to install, Jerricho said Ben Roethlisberger was accurate in saying that it’s about 90 percent different from what they were used to under Bruce Arians.  Jerricho also gave us some insight in what we may see different in this new playbook.

Despite Ben speaking publicly about the playbook, Jerricho told us that Ben is a pro and he’ll be ready to lead the team when it’s time to take the field.

We also got Jerricho to weigh in on the passing of Junior Seau and the Saints bounty situation.

He is happy to be back on the field, and he talks about how he plans to build on a season in which he was named team MVP.

Antonio shares his thoughts on Todd Haley’s new playbook, how the locker room looks without some of their old leaders, and what he makes of the Mike Wallace situation.

Monday, many members of the team and coaching staff were at South Pointe golf club for the annual Cancer Caring Golf Tournament hosted by Hines Ward, Max Starks and Merrill Hoge.

Golf was on the agenda, but football on their minds as the OTAs will get the offense together for the first time with new offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

“People blew it way out of proportion,” Ben Roethlisberger said. “It’s something new, we’re getting to know each other … There’s no trouble between us at all.”

“Some games it might be 60-40 pass; some games it might be 70-30 run,” WR Emmanuel Sanders said of the new offense. “It all depends on the defense that we’re playing that week which is smart.”

Hines Ward has been a part of several great offenses which have been run by a variety of coordinators. He won’t be part of this one, but he knows change is inevitable.

“I’ve had maybe four, five different coordinators and so, it’s a part of the business,” he said. “Players, coaches, they come and go and you have to adjust accordingly and I’m confident that the players will learn the playbook – especially when they start getting to OTAs and training camp and be ready to go before the season starts.”

Roethlisberger says it’s a matter of getting used to something new.

“When you get a comfort level of like eight years of the same thing and then you change it, it’s just something different, so I’m not saying I don’t like the playbook or anything like that,” he said. “Some of the stuff is really – some of the concepts are awesome, it’s just getting an understanding of something new.”

Willie Colon informed us that he will be moving from tackle to guard this season, which opens the door for newly drafted tackle, Mike Adams to start the season at right tackle. Ed tells us that Marcus Gilbert will remain at left tackle.

Ed reported that Mike Wallace will not report to OTA’s because of his contract negotiations. Ed believes that is not a big deal, as long as he doesn’t miss training camp. However, the wide receiver is allowed to sit out nine games before his contract year is foregone.

Running back is an area of concern for the Steelers, and Ed reminds us that there isn’t a high draft-pick among them with Rashard Mendenhall missing time early on this season.

The star of this year’s film is the intensity found on the sidelines during every game. The theme is “Heart.”

“I mean, you see a play unfold during the season, but you don’t get to hear Coach Tomlin’s reaction to it. You don’t get to hear what Brett Keisel says on the sideline. You don’t get to hear Ben Roethlisberger in the huddle, but here you do,” NFL Films producer and Pittsburgh native John Weiss said.

After culling through 50 to 100 hours of film, the entire season was capsulized in 24 minutes with no way to change a disappointing season.

But the public will get to see the team up close and personal.

“I think the personalities in this year in particular I think this film really did capture some of the personalities that are involved with the team, so I think it will be fun to see how people react to it,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said.

The video will be appearing on NFL Network prior to its release for sale in early July.

Sweat chose to pass on the opportunity to play for the Browns and rather instead pursue a career in law or medicine since he has suffered 3 concussions throughout his career.  Despite fearing for his future health, Andrew said it was still a tough decision to make since he had always grown up dreaming about playing in the NFL.

Rather, he has been practicing and preparing to start next season at left guard.

“They moved me to left guard now. I am learning that,” Colon said, according to a report on the Steelers official website. “That is a challenge for me. As a tackle you are used to just being an athlete, left on an island. But as a guard I am between the tackle and (Maurkice) Pouncey, the verbiage and how to work with those guys I am learning. When you are in the middle things happen faster. When I am at tackle I have the whole side of the sideline to work with. At guard I am in a box where I have to work faster and react faster. I have to be more aware of calls. On the flip side I get to get after people.”

Colon has missed the last two years to injuries, but his natural position is right tackle. With the move, Marcus Gilbert will likely remain at right tackle, which is where he played last season in Colon’s absence.

Pouncey will remain the starting center.

First-round draft pick David Decastro is expected by many to be the team’ starting right guard. Second-round draft pick Mike Adams could then start at left tackle if he’s ready.

“Before the draft it was never heard of, I was staying at tackle,” Colon said. “We drafted DeCastro and I get a call the next day that we are moving you to guard. I was never against it. It wasn’t something I frowned upon. For me to still be here, still be a Steeler and still have the chance to crack that starting lineup, I am blessed. I just want to compete and be the best that I can be.”

Steelers OTAs begin May 22.

It allows him time to dedicate to his passions, like beating melanoma, which is the cancer that took his wife, Kaye, in 2010.

“When she was young, she was in North Carolina in the tobacco fields picking tobacco and probably was not using suntan lotions,” said Cowher of his wife.

“So, as a child growing up; again, that’s why I say the older you are, be more aware of your body, and there [are] little signs that are there that can help you then make sure that you nip this early enough so that it does not become lethal.”

Cowher has thrown his support behind a group aimed at wiping out melanoma.

“Skin cancer is incredibly common,” says Dr. Elizabeth K. Kale, of Melanoma Exposed. “In fact, one in five Americans will develop some type of skin cancer in their lifetime. That includes non-melanoma types, which are much more common, which are basal and sqamous carcinoma. Melanoma though is without question the most deadly accounting for more than 75 percent of skin cancer related deaths.”

Known as a no-nonsense coach when he roamed the Steelers’ sidelines, Cowher knows the facts about melanoma, and that macho, tough men are not immune.

“Wear large brimmed hats, suntan lotion, staying out of the tanning booths. Don’t worry about your tan. Worry about your skin,” says Cowher. “Like you said men are twice as likely to die from this as women and if you know that – and also know that if you get detected early – you can cure that. But once it gets inside you, it’s lethal and deadly and we are trying to tell as many people as we can about this.”

Now, Cowher is doing PSAs for the group, Melanoma Exposed.com, urging base-line screening tests before it’s too late.

“The good news is it is not too late,” Cowher adds. “People used to take the approach, the damage is already done. Why bother now? There are some very good studies that if you start today to protect yourself, you can decrease your chance for getting melanoma later in life.”

The crowd cheered as his name was announced during Sunday’s graduation ceremony at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

He received his bachelor’s degree in education nine years after he left school early for the NFL.

Miami University shared their footage with KDKA-TV. Roethlisberger talked about what it meant for him to graduate.

“To me this is just as big, if not bigger, than winning the Super Bowl,” he said. “This is the Super Bowl of life if you ask me.”

Roethlisberger said he did not expect it to take him so long to graduate.

His wife, parents and grandmother attended the ceremony.

“I’m proud to not just say I’m an alum, but now I’m a graduate,” Roethlisberger said. “And it’s an awesome honor. It’s great for me, I think it’s great for the university because I’m proud of this school, I’m proud of Miami, the ‘M’ – not just for football now, I can be proud of the education that I’ve received here.”

Nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu and running back Chris Rainey are now under contract.

Ta’amu’s deal is worth approximately $2.5 million over four years. He was drafted in the fourth round from the University of Washington. He recorded 109 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss in 50 games.

Rainey, drafted in the fourth round out of Florida, also signed a four-year deal. The financial terms of his deal have not been released.

Rainey finished his career ninth on the all-time Florida rushing list with 2,464 yards. He scored 21 touchdowns as both a running back, receiver and returner.

Ta’amu and Rainey are the first two Steelers draft picks to sign contracts with the franchise.

Initial reports said Suggs suffered the injury while playing basketball in Arizona. He has since dispelled those rumors.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Suggs will undergo surgery next week. However, other reports state the Ravens are waiting for a conclusive diagnosis.

The Ravens released a brief statement on Suggs.

“We are in contact with Terrell. He will see a specialist early next week, and we’ll know more at that time.”

Suggs has become one of the better pass rushers in the NFL. He has terrorized the Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisbeger, in particular, in recent years.

Over the last two seasons, Suggs has piled up 10 sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception against the Steelers in five games.

Steelers linebacker Lamarr Woodley quickly went to Twitter with his thoughts upon hearing of the Suggs injury.

“Yall kno i strongly dislike the ravens, but i hate hearing about an injury like the suggs 1.. Wishing him a fast recovery…”

Clemons said it means the world to him getting the opportunity to come home and play against and that it really is a dream come true.

According to Toney, this whole process really hasn’t sunk in to him yet and probably won’t until he steps on the practice field for the first time with his new teammates.

We also had Toney give us a scouting report on himself and what he does well.

The Steelers felt that Mike Adams’ failed drug test at the NFL Combine wasn’t enough to keep him off their draft board. With the first two draft picks dedicated to the offensive line, Ed breaks down how he thinks the line will look in training camp, and next season.

While the Steelers say that they don’t draft for needs, but in the first four rounds, they picked positions that filled major holes in their roster.

Ed was on fire over the weekend. He accurately predicted that the Steelers would move up in the fourth round to get Alameda Ta’Amu, and they did. He tells a funny story about an exchange with Steelers GM, Kevin Colbert about the trade.

He also predicted the selection of tight end, Toney Clemons, who is a New Kensington native that played at Valley High School before moving on to the University of Colorado.

The Steelers began the afternoon by trading up 10 spots in the fourth round to select a possible future replacement to Casey Hampton. They gave up their fourth and sixth round picks to get defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu from the University of Washington.

According to NFL.com, Ta’amu will be best served as a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.

The fourth round pick checks in at 6-foot-3 and about 350 pounds. He actually played directly opposite the Steelers’ first round pick, David DeCastro, this past season.

“Anytime in our scheme you get a nose tackle, the first thing you want to make sure [is] that this guy can play the double team, and his job is to keep the linebackers free or the safety free cause when we bring the safety down in the box, if he can’t do that, he’ll have a tough time playing for us,” said John Mitchell, the Steelers defensive line coach.

“He’s done very well at the University of Washington, and if he can keep the linebackers free and make plays from… hey, we’re going to start off from guard to guard, as he gets familiar with the scheme, expand him from tackle to tackle,” Mitchell added. “I think this guy can play a long time and be a pretty good football player.”

With their next pick, the Steelers took running back Chris Rainey from the Florida Gators in the fifth round. He could see some time as a return man.

This past season, Rainey rushed for 861 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 31 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns. Size could be an issue with Rainey at 5-feet-8-inches tall, but he can make people miss with his speed and agility.

The Steelers traded away that pick in the sixth round, but then had four picks in the seventh round.

First, they selected local kid Toney Clemons from Valley High School in New Kensington. He played receiver at Colorado.

They then took tight end David Paulson from Oregon. Six picks later, it was Terrence Frederick, a corner from Texas A&M. Finally, with the 248th pick of the draft – five shy of being Mr. Irrelevant – the Steelers picked up offensive guard Kelvin Beachum from Southern Methodist.

On Thursday, the Steelers selected DeCastro, a guard out of Stanford, in the first round.

Then on Friday, the Steelers turned heads by taking Ohio State tackle Mike Adams who was wrapped up in the Ohio State scandal with Terrelle Pryor.

He was one of the five Buckeyes caught up in that scandal along with Pryor, which resulted in him being suspended for five games last year.

Adams was caught with drug paraphernalia back in 2009 and he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine in February.

“Well, obviously, you always want the best talent you can get, and adding those guys to the room will give us a talented line, and you play with whoever you have,” said Sean Kugler, the Steelers’ offensive line coach. “And it doesn’t matter to me what round a guy is, I want guys that compete and guys that care about the game, and through our evaluation of both these guys, these are two guys that really like playing football.”

In the third round, the Steelers chose Sean Spence, a linebacker out of Miami.

According to linebackers coach Keith Butler, Spence will back up Lawrence Timmons at inside linebacker.

A couple months ago, Adams was projected to be a first-round pick, but he’s had some character issues to deal with.

He was one of the five Buckeyes caught up in that scandal along with Terrelle Pryor that saw him suspended for five games last year.

Adams was caught with drug paraphernalia back in 2009 and he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine in February.

He convinced them he was worth another look.

Bloomgren said he was a bit surprised to see DeCastro drop as far as he did because they heard he’d go earlier, but going in the first round is still a great accomplishment.

Bloomgren coached with the New York Jets and gives us a comparison between former Steeler and Jet Alan Faneca and David DeCastro saying their abilities to pull are similar.

We wrapped things up with Bloomgren with him telling us how well suited DeCastro is to play guard the Steelers way.

As David DeCastro posed for pictures with his new Steelers jersey, team president Art Rooney II joked the newest Steeler may have already set an unofficial record.

“I think David may have set the record for the shortest time between being drafted and being on a plane to Pittsburgh,” Rooney said.

After being drafted shortly before 11 p.m. ET, DeCastro has been on a whirlwind that brought him from the West Coast on very little sleep.

“Yeah, I’m still trying to catch my breath,” he said. “Bunch of text messages, bunch of phone calls, a bunch of people saying, ‘Congrats.’ Just an exciting time.”

DeCastro made his first appearance as a Steeler Friday and he fit right in.

“Definitely a life-changing moment,” he said. “As far as the Steelers, I was really excited. Obviously the organization, team speaks for itself. Arguably one of the best if not the best fanbase in the world. I’m just excited – great football town, great football city and couldn’t be happier, really.”

The Steelers never expected to land a player like DeCastro who was expected to be drafted much higher in the first round.

“Getting picked by the Steelers definitely helped overcome any disappointment,” he said. “It really wasn’t much and I didn’t go in with any expectations. I knew the draft there’s a ton of variables and a lot of stuff that can happen with all the trades and whatnot and the Steelers picked me – I was more than overjoyed.”

DeCastro was projected as high at the No. 11 pick in various CBSSports.com mock drafts, and projected as the top offensive guard in the draft. He stands 6-foot-5, 316 pounds.

“Everything we would ask him to do we saw him do at Stanford, whether it was pulling or pass protection” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after drafting DeCastro. “… He’s a tough guy. He has a lot of attributed we think will help our football team.”

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was equally impressed. Many were, considering DeCastro was responsible for allowing just one sack in his college career.

It came as a freshman.

“There were several players still available, again surprisingly, for us David was the guy,” Colbert said. “He’s great at the line of scrimmage, he can pull, he can trap, he’s a solid pass protector. Really, the kid is good.”

Colbert also said that DeCastro was one of the players the Steelers identified as worth trading up for in the draft. The way things played out, a trade wasn’t necessary.

DeCastro’s former coach and teammates have high praise for him, pointing out his role as a leader for the Cardinal and his approach to the game.

Stanford head coach David Shaw said DeCastro expects players around him to have a heightened focus and work ethic.

“He arrives angry and focused and expects everybody else to be the same,” Shaw told CBSSports.com. “If he thinks something needs to be said, he says it and when he speaks the players listen.”

First-overall pick, quarterback Andrew Luck said DeCastro has had a business-like attitude for a long time, which many would argue will help him transition to the next level.

“He is so serious he sometimes thinks a high five after a touchdown is too frivolous because it might break concentration,” Luck told CBSSports.com. “But the person he is hardest on is himself.”

DeCastro grew up in a family of athletes, with his father and grandfather being former rugby players in South Africa.

He is the third straight early-round selection for the Steelers along the offensive line. Two years ago they drafted center Maurkice Pouncey and selected tackle Marcus Gilbert with their second-round pick last year.

Operating in a pro-style offense at Stanford, some draft experts think DeCastro can step in and start in the NFL this coming season.

Leftwich missed the entire 2011 season with an arm injury.

In his career as a Steeler, Leftwich has completed 26-of-43 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns. He has over 10,000 career passing yards and 60 career touchdown passes.

Leftwich fills out the Steelers quarterback depth chart. The Steelers recently signed Charlie Batch to go along with starter Ben Roethlisberger.

The 2012 NFL Draft kicks off tonight with the first round and everyone is talking about who the Steelers will choose with their first pick.

You may not know this, but tonight marks the beginning of a holy season – if you will – for Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

So, the question is, who are the Black and Gold going take in the first few rounds.

The draft is a process of weeding the potential superstars from the budding draft day duds, and there is a name on a lot of Steelers’ fans’ minds.

“Hightower, I think is one of them,” said Steelers’ fan Carl Kusar. “That’s about it; that’s the only one I’m hearing.”

Dont’a Hightower is a linebacker for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He’s a big body, has a strong build and is a very physical player with the frame to disrupt plays at the line of scrimmage.

But then, there’s the offense too.

Offensive line,” said John Flint, another fan. “Ben’s been getting beat up for many years now, and it would definitely be nice to have somebody good up there besides Pouncey [who has] been hurt for the last two years.”

If you don’t think the first round is that big of a deal, keep this in mind, there are seven Steelers in the Hall of Fame who were first round draft picks.
