A game in the past is certainly in the past, but there is no doubt Dayton had some extra motivation tonight to not get swept.  After the first nine minutes of the game, where the Dukes played to their strengths by forcing turnovers, playing good transition basketball, finding open guys and finishing, the momentum kind of just stopped.

“We had open shots we couldn’t knock down and they converted them,” said Dukes’ senior guard Eric Evans.

That would be a pretty accurate statement, as the Dukes shot under 40 percent from the field, 19 percent from the arc and 60 percent from the line, while UD shot 47 percent from the field and 88 percent from the line.

In an already balanced Dayton team coming into the game, five UD players scored in double digits, led by senior guard Paul Williams’ game-high 18, 16 of which came in the second half.  Junior forward Matt Kavanaugh finished with a double-double, 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

“Against a team like Dayton who’s got (Chris) Johnson and (Paul) Williams who are seniors and guys who have sort of been through the wars of our league and understand it, those guys, they’re good basketball players.  Every mistake we made, especially defensively getting back, they made us pay for,” said Dukes head coach Ron Everhart.

Dayton finished the game with 20 turnovers, but everything else seemed to diminish the sting of that number, including the fact that the Dukes only converted 18 points off of UD’s seven above average turnovers.

The Flyers scored over half of their points in the paint including 21 second-chance points, a result of 41-24 out-rebounding effort.

“We’ve been playing small all year, we have to work with what we have, and we can’t make excuses.  We were supposed to get the rebounds and we didn’t,” said Duke’s senior swingman B.J. Monteiro who scored all of his 10 points in the second half.

Just seven free throws were attempted in the first half between both teams, including an and-one for Dayton’s leading scorer, senior guard Kevin Dillard with two minutes to go to give the Flyers a 31-24 lead.

The Dukes cut the lead to three at the half, but had three consecutive turnovers at the start of the second as Dayton when on a 6-0 run.

Duquesne answered with a 9-0 run a few minutes later to take a 48-45 lead after what looked like a sequence in which the Dukes would finally get some good momentum to finish out the game.  It began with Mike Talley’s two free-throws and continued with Mamadou Datt’s two dunks, defensive rebound and a B.J. Monteiro three.

Up until the last six minutes, it was a back and forth game.  This season the Dukes have been plagued with large runs against them, and this time Dayton’s run came too late for them to recover.  Dayton went on a 23-9 run in the last seven minutes of the game.

“I didn’t think offensively we had a lot of patience, and I think our bad offense led to bad defense,” Coach Everhart said.

Talley led the Dukes with 13 points.

Even though the last two months were tough, reflecting on last year was overall a positive experience. 

In the past, players have been used to recruit other players, but Frank believes that Derrick Lee will stay retired from the game. 

Frank did not shed a tear when Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols left the division.  No progress yet to be reported on contract extensions for Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker. 

It’s happening more and more, and the IRS has set up a hotline for people who are victims of it.

It happened to Vanessa Dowe of South Florida. “I filed my taxes just yesterday, and I got an alert today that my taxes have already been filed!” Dowe said.

IRS Special Agent Andrew Hromoko says someone who gets your name, address and social security number could try filing a fraudulent return.

“It’s not really your refund,” said Agent Hromoko. “It’s a completely bogus tax return that may contain all sorts of fraudulent information.”

Still, you won’t get your actual refund until the matter is straightened out.

A man was arrested last month in Pittsburgh for allegedly using stolen identities in Arizona to get refunds. Adrian Lugo, 39, is accused of using the identities of 34 people who had died to file returns and collect the refunds.

But Hromoko says another scam to look out for is tax preparers who use bogus information on your return to get you an inflated refund.

Jamel Williams of Pittsburgh and Larry Snow of Seward have both pleaded guilty to false preparation of tax returns, according to the IRS.

Hromoko says if clients know of the scam, they could be charged as well, and at the very least, they will have to pay back any refund money that was gotten through illegal means.

“It’s not free money,” said Hromoko.

He says there are a couple of red flags to look for when selecting a tax preparer. He says preparers should always be willing to sign the form and that you should be suspicious of preparers who charge based on the amount of the return they get you.

Finally, he says to always review the return before you send it in to make sure everything makes sense.

Rebecca Stahl, 37, is a sixth grade math teacher at Derry Area Middle School. Her father, Ken Anderson, reported her missing Tuesday.

“She’s in contact with me every few days and her and her sister are very close and they talk about every day,” Anderson said. “And we hadn’t heard anything for about three days.”

Sources say investigators obtained a search warrant as they seek leads in her disappearance.

Police sources say that Stahl and her husband had a violent history and she got a PFA against him at one point.

“I want her to know that we love her so much and we want her home safe and if she’s able to call us to please call us,” Kelly Beltz, Stahl’s sister, tearfully said. “We’re worried sick.”

Derry Middle School Principal Cheryl Walters says the staff’s thoughts and prayers are with Stahl.

One of her former students, Noah Alter, said that Stahl was a wonderful teacher and helped him a lot in class.

State police in Greensburg are investigation.

So when it comes to seniors hanging up their license, he says, “I’d say around (age) 80 or 85 they should start consider being off the road.”

A new study by a national transportation research group reinforces that view.

“Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the nation in the number of fatalities where the crash involved a driver 65 years of age or older,” says Carolyn Bonifas of the TRIP Research Group in Washington, D.C.

In 2010, Pennsylvania ranked fourth with 265 fatalities involving an older drivers — just after Florida (503 deaths), Texas (397 deaths) and California (390).

Overall, seniors drive just 8 percent of all road miles but account for 17 percent of traffic fatalities.

The problem is likely to get worse, as baby boomers get older. By the year 2025, the population of Americans 65 and over is going to explode by 60 percent.

That means that one out of every five drivers on the highway will be over 65.

Older drivers themselves are often the victims of these accidents.

“What may for a younger driver be only a minor collision and a couple scrapes can be much more devastating to an older driver,” says Bonifas.

But older drivers treasure the same freedom that everyone else enjoys.

“I think it’s important because if their children or maybe they don’t have a ride, maybe they don’t use Access, maybe they just want to be independent,” says Gene Rua of Greenfield.

And most seniors say it’s safer to drive with a 65-year-old than a 16-year-old.

“No texting, no cell phones, none of that,” says one.

Nonetheless, Mike Davern of Greenfield gave up his license at age 80.

“People don’t want to let go of their license, but I feel that I don’t want to be responsible for somebody getting killed.”

Police Civilian Review Board Director Beth Pittinger says the matter should have ended there.

“That should have been it,” she said. “He’s not covered at that point by any bargaining unit agreement. He is an independent person seeking employment as a police officer, so that should have been the end of the deal.”

But Skweres appealed, was given another psychological review and then become a police officer.

But that’s not all. As a result of the case, the city changed its hiring policy, allowing candidates who failed a psychological review to get an opinion from a psychologist of their own choosing and then face a panel of three.

The new policy was approved by the Civil Service Commission and signed by then-Mayor Bob O’Connor.

But Pittinger believes it increases the possibility that psychologically unfit candidates eventually get hired.

“This is too serious of a job for there to be any question whatsoever,” Pittinger said. “It’s not something negotiable. You’re fit for duty or you’re not.”

During the game at Brentwood on Feb. 3, Monessen basketball players claim they were subjected to racial taunts.

“I hope that will never be the case again at any school in the WPIAL or in the state or ever again,” Chavas Rawlins, a Monessen player, said. “Hopefully that won’t be the case [any] more – no banana suits, no nothing, no disrespecting other schools – just all basketball, football, whatever sport it is.”

The players claimed two Brentwood students in banana suits ran around the court calling them “monkeys,” “cotton pickers” and more.

According to the statement, Brentwood administration and security acted swiftly and appropriately to the situation.

The two students in question were ejected from the game and were suspended.

“The students ran onto the court which no one is allowed onto the court during the time of play and immediate action was taken and that would have happened whether they were dressed in costume or whether they just ran on the court in general,” Brentwood High School Principal Jason Olexa said.

“So we were very happy to at least be able to share that information with the board and straighten out some of the misconceptions that were out there,” he added.

As a result of the quick action, neither the schools nor their employees will be suspended or put on probation.

However, the board was unable to specifically determine if any Brentwood student, student-athlete or fan used any racial slurs that night.

Both schools have expressed an interest to work together in order to ensure that an incident like this does not happen in the future.

A joint-action plan must be submitted to the WPIAL board by June 1, 2012, for review and approval.

The Monessen superintendent says she has not made a decision about appealing the ruling to the PIAA.

Last week, 21-year-old Brandy Furlong and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Brill Nicholson, brought their newborn son home to Scott Street in McKeesport.

Police say the mother left her child in a baby carrier on the living room floor while she used an upstairs bathroom.

Returning, she found the family Husky standing over her bleeding infant son. Howard, just two days old, died 90-minutes later of severe head trauma.

Aside from the Husky, a 1-and-a-half-year-old male named Niko, Furlong had three other dogs in the house – all pit bulls.

Until last night, the Husky and one pit bull were quarantined in a McKeesport kennel.

Over the phone, Brill Nicholson, the baby’s father, told KDKA’s Mary Robb Jackson that he and Brandy went to the kennel and retrieved both dogs and immediately signed over custody of the animals to William Uhring of Churchill who paid the $600 in costs for the dogs’ release.

Uhring felt sorry for Niko and decided to pay the fees and adopt the animal.

And contrary to previous reports, Nicholson says that neither he nor Brandy ever asked to have the dogs returned to them.

Tuesday at Magistrate Eugene Riazzi’s office, McKeesport police cited Brandy Furlong for harboring a dangerous animal and four counts each of failing to have her pets vaccinated or properly licensed.

Then, with no explanation, all of those charges against Furlong were dropped Wednesday morning.

He was arrested on July 9, after a Dekalb County police officer said he saw Ward hit a curb and drive out of his lane.

Ward has reportedly pleaded guilty to a lesser count of reckless driving. The DUI charge was dropped.

Ward is facing a 12-month probation, 80 hours of community service and a $2,000 fine.

In a police report issued in July of 2011, police said Ward could not keep his balance, mixed up and omitted letters while reciting the alphabet and refused a breathalyzer test.

A portable reading showed a blood alcohol level of 0.128, but the test was not admissible in court.

Ward’s agent said in a statement: “By dropping the DUI charges, it is clear that the prosecution did not have sufficient evidence … Hines has always maintained that his ability to drive was in no way impaired.”

It comes as Santorum, who often speaks in religious terms, is under attack for old comments about Satan targeting America.

Today, he wouldn’t back away, turning remarks on President Obama instead.

“And yet our president refuses to call evil evil, refuses to even name it, refuses to confront it,” Santorum told a crowd in Arizona.

The strong language is having an impact.

The latest Quinnipiac Poll has Santorum the favorite of Republican and Republican-leaning independents, nationally, by a 13-point margin.

Santorum has 50 percent, Romney has 37 percent, Gingrich has 14 percent, and Paul has 11 percent.

Among that group, Santorum is strongest among white evangelical Christians, Tea Party members and self-styled conservatives, while Romney’s support comes from moderates, college-educated voters and those with family incomes over a $100,000.

With the title of front-runner, Santorum expects to be the target at Wednesday night’s Arizona debate.

Now this same poll shows President Obama beating both Romney and Santorum, with Romney being slightly stronger.

That parallels other national polls that show the president’s lead growing while Republicans squabble among themselves.

Of course, for next Tuesday and Super Tuesday, what really counts are the state results, not these national polls.

And these 12 contests on February 28 and March 6 will establish whether Rick Santorum is the front-runner, or not.

This is the night Patrick will finally be back at practice with his Pittsburgh Hornets teammates since suffering a concussion more than three months ago.

Cobourn doesn’t remember much of the injury.

“Well I went and skated to the bench and then I like blacked out,” he says. “I just remember getting rushed to the hospital.”

Unfortunately, these days Cobourn’s case has become all too common. As head injuries have reached epidemic proportions in the NHL, it’s become just as big of a problem in youth hockey.

Chris Stern is head coach of the Pittsburgh Hornets midget major team.

“I’ve been doing this 24 years and it increases every year,” says Chris Stern, head coach of the Pittsburgh Hornets Midget Major team, “and this year is the worst.”

Three players on Stern’s 18-and-under team have missed time due to concussions.

“The worst part was being tired all the time,” says 17-year-old forward Michael Louria. “I couldn’t focus on anything, always had a headache.”

It’s something Louria’s mother, Kim, has come to expect.

“At this point it’s something that you know is inevitable, it’s coming,” she says. “You just hope that it’s caught, cured and he’s not back out until he’s better.”

But what makes concussions so frustrating is you never really know when you’re all better. Sometimes you don’t even know you have a concussion at all.
That’s exactly what happened to 16-year-old Chris Shero.

“I ended up playing the rest of that game,” Shero says, “and actually I ended up playing seven more games.”

Nobody knew Shero had a concussion until his grades dropped suddenly, from all A’s and B’s to C’s and D’s. It took him six months to get back to normal and he is only one of four players on the Hornets 16-and-under team that have been lost to concussions over the last two seasons.

And if the name Shero sounds familiar, it should. Chris’ father, Ray, has dealt first hand with concussion problems as general manager of the Penguins.

“I think we had six or seven concussions with the Penguins this year, maybe six last year. Obviously the Sidney Crosby thing happened last January and my son – it happened last January.

“So over the last year I’ve learned an awful lot about concussions and Sidney being our franchise player , my son Chris, he’s my franchise player, so you’re on top of it as parents,” Ray Shero said.

So the question becomes, are there really more concussions today? Or is there simply more awareness of them, so more are being reported? That’s where opinions begin to differ.

“I think it’s definitely awareness and diagnosis,” Ray Shero says.

“I think there’s more instances. I think what we’re seeing too is more attention to the aftercare,” says Jeff Potter, Head Coach of the 16-under Pittsburgh Hornets team.

“It’s partially awareness,” Stern says, “but it’s only 20 percent. I think awareness is when players come back. It’s definitely a case of it happening more.

Bigger, stronger, faster doesn’t tell the whole story. I have to believe it’s equipment. You can literally take a ball bat to an elbow pad and not hurt a player.

“It’s not just this level. It’s top to bottom. NHL to pee wees. USA Hockey is trying. They’re emphasizing head shots. But the numbers aren’t decreasing so I don’t know what the answer is.”

And that’s what makes concussions so scary: The unknown. How do you avoid them? How will they affect you? Will these players be forced to give up hockey before they even become adults? It’s something Patrick Cobourn must face every time he steps on the ice.

“I can’t get hurt again,” he says. “This is my fifth concussion – third this year too. If I get any more symptoms, I’ll probably have to give it up,” Cobourn said. ” … It’s very scary.”

KDKA’s Rick Dayton visited one church where a group of retirees have been at it for a very long time.

If you want it, they’ve got it. Haluski, pierogies, baked mac and cheese, various kinds of croissant sandwiches – it’s much more than a Lenten fish fry at Epiphany Catholic Church.

“Just like the father said this morning, Lent is not about all doom and gloom,” Mary Louise Horton, of Shadyside, said. “It’s about a re-commitment to what really is important in making us happy.”

“It’s for the church,” added Rose Torregrossa, an 89-year-old parishioner. “Like I say, at my age I don’t get to do too much, and this is something for me to do.”

For decades they volunteered at the fish fry. Dolores DiPofi should chair the marketing department.

“We have lines outside, all the way outside, all the way around,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”

It takes a lot of people doing a lot of different jobs to make sure the fish fry goes off without a hitch. For example, it is Jimmy Williams job to make sure the fish is perfect every time.

“We bread it ourselves. Secret recipe; can’t share that,” he said.

He’ll cook nearly a half ton of fish this Ash Wednesday, at least 750 pieces of cod.

There is some age to this group, but none have been at it as long as a 92-year-old they call “Sis.”

“I’m doing it for my church. I love my church,” said Katherine Gaito, who has served for 50 years. “I’ll never stop unless the man upstairs calls me and that’s when I’m going.”

So for now, they’ll just keep the fish coming.

Around the same time Penguins’ General Manager Ray Shero saw his best player suffer a concussion, he also saw his own son suffer one as well.

“Jan. 15, 2011,” Chris Shero recalls. “We were playing out in L.A. and I got hit.”

Shero, 16, didn’t know it at the time, but he had suffered a concussion that would keep him out for the next five months.

“I wasn’t there,” the Penguins’ general manager said. “My wife was there, and it’s one of those things, they get hit. It wasn’t that hard of a hit, and he played a few more games and got hit again.”

Sound familiar?

The plights of Chris Shero and Sidney Crosby have paralleled at times over the last year, and even brought the two together, in an unfortunate concussion connection, to compare notes.

“We talked back and forth on how everything was when I had my concussion and when he had his,” Chris said. “We talked about how things were. We were able to relate to each other so much easier with that. He helped me and maybe I helped him a little bit.”

He did.

“It’s nice when someone can relate no matter what age,” Crosby said. “Even for him to hear what I was going through was good for him. To see someone who can’t go to school and can’t be with his friends, I think it was good for me to get a different viewpoint on it.”

“And that’s what happens,” Ray Shero told KDKA-TV. “You compare, whether it’s teammate to teammate, or in Chris’ case, being around those guys. Sid was really helpful for Chris, too.”

Now, the elder Shero is looking to USA Hockey, youth hockey’s governing body, to try and stem the tide of concussions in the younger ranks, so incidents like Chris’ can be avoided.

“At the end of the game sometimes… it’s not even if your kid won or lost or if they scored a goal,” said Shero. “It’s: ‘Are you ok.’

“I sent something to USA Hockey where I really believe rules for majors for elbowing and hits from behind have to be dealt with more severely in terms of supplemental discipline as we have in our league, where a kid is going miss more than one game, maybe two or three games, before he’s allowed back to play,” he added.

Shero was also instrumental in getting a baseline test for local high school hockey players so future concussions can be more easily diagnosed. But the problem Chris went through is not an isolated case, and prevention can only go so far.

Doctors are seeing it more and more: adults who were never allergic to anything suddenly developing them.

As KDKA Health Editor Dr. Maria Simbra found out, these allergies could be life-threatening.

“It’s still heavily based in children, but more and more recently I’ve been seeing more adults with complaints about possible food allergy,” Dr. David Skoner, of Allegheny General Hospital Allergy & Immunology, said.

Eighteen percent of kids, compared to three percent of adults. It happened in real life to 20-year-old Johanna Trupp.

“When I was eating apples, I felt nauseous,” said Trupp. “I couldn’t stop salivating; I had this pain up by my ear and I was itching around my mouth.”

It killed 20-year-old Faith Floridia when she went into anaphylactic shock, which is a life-threatening emergency with swelling and a severe drop in blood pressure.

“They had her on life support and the question was what could this be? And they said it was the shrimp and crab meat she was eating,” said Donna Floridia, Faith’s mother. “I said, ‘We constantly ate shrimp, how could this be?’ And they said, she had sudden onset of allergies.”

Local attorney Sandy Harvey had it happen at work. A simple steak salad set it off.

“My teeth were tingling, and my lips started to tingle and my hands were red,” Harvey said.

A minute later, he passed out. His blood pressure fell. He was rushed to the hospital.

“The blood pressure can fall, people can faint, pass out,” Dr. Skoner says. “The breathing can become more difficult with stridor.”

At first, Harvey didn’t know what the offending food was. Skin tests didn’t show it. So to find out, he got more intense testing.

“Ten tubes of blood for all the things he wanted to test,” said Harvey.

“Sometimes the only way to do it is with a blood test; and if that doesn’t do it, then with an oral food challenge,” Dr. Skoner said.

After a nerve-wracking 10-day wait, afraid to eat anything, Harvey finally got the results. It was a soy allergy; an ingredient in the steak salad, but he had mild milk and egg white allergies, too.

“I had been eating these things all my life,” he said. “I asked the doctor, ‘Why didn’t it bother me before?’ And quite frankly, he said the concentration and the timing of it; you had enough such that it overwhelmed the immune system.”

For Harvey, it was a life-changing event.

“I have to really think about what I’m going to eat,” he said. “I look to see what the ingredients are.”

He always carries an EpiPen, an emergency epinephrine injection at the first sign of a reaction – tingling, swelling or a spreading redness.

“The current guidelines they’re recommending, not late, but very, very early treatment with epinephrine stabbed into the upper thigh,” says Dr. Skoner.

Ironically, he already carried an EpiPen for a bee sting allergy he thought he had since childhood – something that did not show up on testing now.

“I’m guessing he lost that allergy,” Dr. Skoner said. “Now that illustrates things can change.”

While many kids outgrow their food allergies, what happens when the problem comes on in adulthood isn’t well-studied.

Even with childhood cases, no one really looks to see if the allergies have indeed gone away, so people may still take precautions for decades when it’s not really necessary.

Most of those who start the trip don’t finish; but a Beaver County couple is hoping to buck the trend.

“I think this is the kind of hill we’ll encounter in Georgia,” said Pastor Bruce Cote as he worked his way down a rugged trail in Brady’s Run Park, followed by his wife, Paula.

The Beaver County couple is gearing up to hike the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine.

“We’ll start on March 17, which most people know as St. Patrick’s Day,” says Rev. Cote. “But for me, it’s my dad’s birthday. He passed away in ’96. And we hope to finish in late September.”

It’s a journey of 2,181 miles.

They’re not just doing it for their health. The hike has already raised more than $50,000 in pledges for Urban Impact, a foundation on Pittsburgh’s North Side that benefits inner city youth.

“Where the schools are graduating only 60 percent of their kids, when they get involved with urban impact, that graduation rate goes up to 97 percent,” says Cote.

Donations collected by the hike will go toward finding college or meaningful employment for those graduates. But Cote knows the odds of finishing are not good.

“Seventy-five to 90 percent of hikers who begin this end up failing,” he said. “They don’t make it.”

He says passion for their cause will spur them on.

Paula, meanwhile, says they will each keep separate journals during their six-month Odyssey.

“We’re not going to share the journals on the trail,” she said. “We’re actually just going to journal every day, and at the end we’ll compare notes.”

According to state police, 37-year-old Rebecca Stahl was last seen at her home on Feb. 20.

She hasn’t talked to her family since Feb. 18. Stahl’s family said she was supposed to have a girl’s night in with her sister and never called to confirm plans.

On Tuesday, her father reported her as missing around 10:30 a.m.

The Derry Middle School teacher had been off work recovering at her Hempfield home after a recent surgery and her family is concerned that she left home without her medication.

“It looks to be that she had only left with the clothing on her back, and her purse and her phone as well,” said Trooper Steve Limani, of the Pennsylvania State Police.

State police are now working with Stahl’s family and friends to gather clues as to where she may have gone. Her family is very concerned but also staying positive.

“I want her to know that we love her so much and we want her home safe and if she’s able to call us, please call us,” said Kelly Beltz, Stahl’s sister. “We’re worried sick and we just want her back.”

Stahl is described as being 5-feet, 4-inches tall with brown eyes and short, blonde, spiked hair.

She was last seen wearing a brown jumpsuit with white sneakers.

Authorities say 13-year-old Tynesha Wilder was located in Jeannette.

Officials said that they were concerned about Wilder because she has mental health issues.

She was last seen by her mother Monday morning when she was leaving for school. Police said her father spotted her at the East Liberty Mall on Tuesday with several girls about 15- or 16-years-old.

Wilder is a student at Arsenal Middle School in Lawrenceville.

“Your home really can tell you where it hurts,” says Angie Hicks, founder of Angie’s List. “You just need to understand what it’s saying.”

Paying attention to the basics of home care is a lot like brushing your teeth or exercising and eating well, Hicks said.  “Taking care of the basics will save you stress, time and money. Neglecting them won’t just cost you more down the road, it could actually put your family in danger,” she said.

7 Signs Your House Needs Professional Care

1.    Up on the Roof: A small issue with your roof doesn’t mean you need to replace the whole thing. But letting the little things go only means you’re in for big bills later. If you notice loose shingles, have attic leaks, suspect chimney issues or see other signs of damage up high, call in a reputable roofer, gutter or chimney expert or a handyman to give you great advice about what you need done.

2.    Leaks don’t fix themselves: Leaky faucets and running toilets will just get worse, so do yourself a favor and get those fixed before major damage occurs. If you notice a jump in your water bill but haven’t increased your usage, you likely have a hidden leak, which left undetected could lead to mold, wood rot and severe water damage. Don’t work with anyone who isn’t happy to show you his or her plumbing license.

3.    Caulk it up: The caulking around your tub and shower prevents moisture penetration, which can lead to mold, tile and wall damage and warped cabinetry. Keeping everything watertight will save you a bundle, so be sure to repair any caulking failures. But don’t stop there. All homes get cracks and voids in their outside walls over time. Look closely at where two boards come together, because cracks often start there. Also look for damage from animals that are looking for a way in. Caulk any cracks you see to avoid water penetration, subsequent wood rot and to keep the critters out.

4.    Sparks fly: Lights that dim on their own schedule aren’t just annoying: they’re a clear signal that you have an electrical problem. Experts say too many homeowners tolerate this situation for too long, which puts their homes at risk for electrical fire. Another often tolerated-too-long issue is when using one device causes another to switch off because you’ve blown a fuse. This is a sign you have a capacity or circuit box issue. Less dangerous but still signal-worthy are springy outlets that don’t hold plugs. If you have any of these issues, call in a licensed, reputable electrician.

5.    Drafty doors and windows: Improperly sealed windows and doors will bring cold air inside during the winter and let cooled air out in the summer, costing you big bucks on your energy bill. An energy audit can tell you where your leaks are and how to seal them up.

6.    Filter it out: HVAC experts say 60 percent of their service calls result from systems stressed by dirty air filters. Changing air filters regularly (every quarter or so; more if you have pets) can save you up to $100 each year on your energy bill, and will keep you from needing emergency repair. Many highly reputable heating and air conditioning companies offer maintenance plans that include an annual inspection. Doing this will give you an early alert to any issues you have with your entire HVAC system so you can stave off breakdowns.

7.    Pump it up: Take a look at your sump pump from time to time. If it’s in good shape and its batteries are good, it could save you thousands of dollars in flood damage. But you don’t want to find out it needs repairs after the water starts rising. Get an annual inspection and check the batteries at least quarterly.

Restoring enamel fixtures:  Salt can be mixed with turpentine to create a cleaning paste that will restore enamel fixtures around the house. This mixture can help whiten older surfaces that have turned yellow with age, such as sinks, bathtubs and toilets. Apply to the damaged area and let it sit for 15 minutes. Afterward, wipe the surface clean with a damp sponge. A mixture of salt and baking soda can also act as a cleaner that is good for stovetops and silverware.

Removing carpet stains: Spilled liquids on the carpet, such as wine and gravy, can be difficult to soak up without pushing some of the liquid further into the carpet fibers. After soaking up the majority of the liquid with a dry towel, pour salt on the area to absorb the remainder of the liquid. You also can mix one part salt with four parts rubbing alcohol to remove grease stains by rubbing the mixture in the same direction as the carpet fibers. After rubbing, thoroughly rinse the area with water. As with any carpet cleaning solution, test first on an inconspicuous area to ensure the solution doesn’t cause damage.

Revitalizing furniture: If a wooden surface in your home has been marred by a hot dish or water, remove the mark by applying a thick paste composed of salt and salad oil. Simply spread the paste over the affected area and buff the surface slightly with a soft cloth.
Cleaning dishes: White or lighter colored tea cups, coffee cups and other dishes can easily become stained after continual use. To remove these stains, sprinkle salt on the affected area of the dish and use a damp cloth or sponge to scrub the stains away. Use circular motions when scrubbing for effective results.

Washing clothes: When treating stubborn perspiration stains in clothing, mix 4 tablespoons of salt and 1 liter of water for an effective cleaning solution. Sponge the shirt with the mixture until the stain is completely removed. Rust and mildew stains on clothing can be removed by soaking the clothing in a mixture of lemon juice and salt for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, lay the clothing out in the sun for a few hours then rinse and dry.
Although salt can be an effective cleaning material for certain surfaces and household items, it is not a cure-all solution for every area of the home. If you are unsure of how certain areas should be cleaned, contact a professional.
