Nemacolin Officials Plan To Reopen Quickly After Fire

FARMINGTON (KDKA) – Officials plan to be back to skiing within a couple of days despite a massive fire that destroyed a lodge at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Sunday night.

The Mystic Mountain Ski Lodge went up in flames around 8 p.m. Sunday and was still burning as of 7 a.m. Monday.

Fire crews from 13 different companies in four counties responded to the fire, but there was little they could do to save the structure.

Firefighters were hampered by heavy smoke and intense heat when they arrived.

The heat burned and melted their hoses and even shattered glass on some of the fire trucks.

“Upon arrival, we encountered heavy smoke conditions from the building. The sprinkler system did activate, but the fire was so big inside that the sprinklers couldn’t keep up with it. Nine degree temperatures caused a lot of problems for water supply. We had freezing issues for the trucks,” Farmington Volunteer Fire Chief Brian Vansickle said.

The glow from the fire could be seen up to 30 miles away.

Despite all of that, officials have already begun making arrangements in order to be back open for business in a couple of days.

“Honestly, that’s the first thing a couple people said when we were in the car watching. We’re like, “Okay, what are we going to do next weekend?’ We’re in the building right now where we’re going to be running our food and beverage operations. We’ve got a rental company on the phone for ski rentals and we’re going to put tents up and we’re going to ski, simple as that. It’s what we do,” General Manager Chris Plummer said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Two employees were inside the lodge at the time of the fire, but they were able to get out safely.

The cause of the fire may never be known due to the extent of the damage

Neighbors Devastated After Boy’s Death In Knoxville

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A man was arrested overnight and is now facing charges in connection with the alleged beating death of his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son in Knoxville.

According to police, the incident happened at an apartment building in the 100-block of Knox Avenue around 11:40 p.m.

Anthony Bush, 29, was taken into custody late Saturday night in connection with the death of Donovan McKee. Authorities say Bush was home with the boy while his mother was working.

The boy’s mother found him unresponsive and called 911, authorities say. The 11-year-old died around 2:45 a.m. at Children’s Hospital.

Neighbors across the hall, who did not want to be identified, were filled with regret because they said they suspected McKee and his younger brother were being abused.

“They never came outside or nothing,” said one of the neighbors. “I knew it. I was going to call CYS and I didn’t.”

“I just wish I could have done something to help,” said another.

According to investigators, Bush told police he planned to discipline the 11-year-old while his mother was at work because she always stopped him when she was at home.

According to the criminal complaint, Bush is accused of beating the child over an eight-hour period, hitting him in the head, legs, arms and trunk area with wooden sticks.

Police say they found McKee lying naked on the living room floor. They also found blood stains on clothing and on bed sheets.

Investigators say Bush later told police he did it and it was his fault.

“Anthony should be ashamed of himself,” one of the neighbors added. “No punishment would be good enough for taking a child’s life.”

Police say McKee’s 5-year-old brother was not harmed. Bush is charged with criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children.

Malkin Leads Way Again As Pens Down Lightning 4-2

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) — They say home is where the heart is, and it’s also apparently where the wins are for the Penguins who have now won six straight at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Home is also where the goals are for Evgeni Malkin.

He continues to dominate and he increased his home goal-scoring streak Sunday to eight consecutive games, which is just three behind Mario Lemieux’s 11 straight games back in 1996.

Just like they did against the Winnipeg Jets Saturday, the Pens fell behind by two early but managed to fight back for a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang also scored for the Penguins. And backup goalie Brent Johnson made 21 saves in the win.

For Tampa Bay, Steve Downie scored both goals and Mathieu Garon made 37 saves in a losing effort.

Steven Stamkos, the NHL’s leading goal scorer, was held pointless and mustered just one shot against Johnson. The Lightning’s star came in with 10 points during a six-game point streak.

The Penguins’ top defensive pairing of Letang and Brooks Orpik held the high-scoring Stamkos in check once again but briefly had trouble containing Downie.

The blue collar forward came in with only nine goals this season before beating Johnson twice on the same shift. Downie took advantage of a turnover then fired a slapshot that handcuffed Johnson to put Tampa Bay on the board. He lit the lamp again 11 seconds later, tapping in a pass from Teddy Purcell on the doorstep to make it 2-0 halfway through the first period.

The flurry seemed to wake up Malkin.

It was his power-play goal, a bomb from the right circle that sailed over Garon, with less than four minutes to go in the first that got the Pens going.

Kunitz tied it at 2 early in the second when the Lightning became so focused on Malkin they let Kunitz race down the middle of the ice practically uncontested.

He beat Garon with a backhand and the Penguins were off to the races.

Boucher tried to calm things down, calling a timeout in hopes the Lightning would catch their breath.

But Letang put Pittsburgh in front 29 seconds later on a perfect feed from Kunitz, who later assisted Malkin for an easy tap-in goal.

It was all the offense Johnson would need. The veteran had lost each of his previous four starts, raising concerns about Pittsburgh’s goaltending depth as the postseason slowly approaches.

While Johnson wasn’t spectacular, he was steady, which is about all the Penguins need these days considering the way the offense is humming.

The last time Tampa Bay visited the CONSOL Energy Center it walked out with a win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

That Penguin team, however, was struggling to score without Malkin and Crosby, both sidelined with injuries. Crosby is again on the injured reserve due to concussion-like symptoms, but Pittsburgh is getting by just fine without its captain.

Malkin kept the Lightning from creeping above .500 for the first time since Nov. 28. Tampa Bay came in 7-1-2 in its last 10 games to show signs of getting back in the playoff chase, but couldn’t keep up with the Penguins turned up the pressure.

Adele Returns To Stage After Laser Surgery Fixes Vocal Cords

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — For the first time in nearly five months, British soul singer Adele took the stage to perform live.

Adele, who had the top selling album of 2011, was forced to stop performing after a polyp developed on her vocal cord. But with laser surgery, the singer returned to the stage Sunday night at the Grammy Awards sounding better than ever.

At just 23-years-old, Adele became an enormous success; but suddenly, the music died.

60 Minutes: “The year of Adele”

The British soul singer has sold 12 million copies of “21″ in the past year. But last October, she fell silent, canceling her tour and wondering if she would ever sing again.

She was suffering from vocal bleeding.

“That’s exactly what the problem often is in a singer,” said Dr. Stephen Zeitels, of Massachusetts General Hospital. “Unstable blood vessels will burst and when you have vocal bleeding you simply can’t perform.”

Adele entrusted her voice and her career to Dr. Zeitels, the director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center. He’s saved the voices of singers ranging from Cher to Lionel Richie, The Who’s Roger Daltry, and even Julie Andrews.

He’s fixed their vocal cords by using laser technology, enabling them to sing again in just a matter of weeks. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler is another of his success stories.

“It’s exactly the technology I used with Steven Tyler,” said Dr. Zeitels. “It’s exactly what I use to treat all cancers endoscopically. It’s a wonderful technology.”

The surgery technique used to treat Adele’s vocal cords can also be used to remove cancerous polyps.

Adele received a standing ovation after singing at the Grammy Awards show Sunday night and she walked away with four awards.

Fire Erupts At Nemacolin Resort Ski Lodge

FARMINGTON (KDKA) — A massive fire has destroyed a ski lodge at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Fayette County.

The blaze broke out Sunday night at the Mystic Mountain Ski Lodge in Farmington.

Additional fire crews were called in to help battle the smoke and flames.

Officials say high winds fanned the flames, and extremely cold temperatures caused some major water issues for the crews fighting the fire.

Everyone made it out of the building safely.

However, one firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of chest pains and smoke inhalation. There is no word on the firefighter’s condition.

There is also no word yet on what sparked the fire.

Houston Leaves Behind Positive Impact On Local Fans

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Whitney Houston had an impact on her fans.

The iconic pop star performed several times in the Pittsburgh area; and while she was here, she touched many lives. And for those she had more intimate contact with, the impact has lasted for years.

When Ebony McKinney of Stanton Heights heard “The Greatest Love Of All,” back in 1987, the only thing she wanted in the world was to meet Whitney Houston.

And the only people who could make that happen was the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I called the phone number and this woman answered the phone, and it turns out it was her mother,” Michele Atkins, the former director of Make-A-Wish. “And her mom said, ‘Whitney’s going to get some ice cream; wait a minute, let me to grab her.’ And Whitney came back in and got on the phone.”

Atkins said Houston couldn’t have been more gracious about the meeting and supporting McKinney. In fact after they met, they kept in touch.

“She was very giving, very real,” said Atkins. “I sometimes wondered if the reasons she had so many subsequent problems is she was so real.”

Houston made two Pittsburgh appearances, once at the Civic Arena and the second at Starlake Amphitheater.

Rich Engler produced and promoted both shows. He was impressed by both her personality and her talent.

“What a sweet lady,” Engler said of Houston. “She was just very sweet, down to earth, quiet, very quiet, very much to herself.”

He still has an official tour pass from when he met her. The pass didn’t really mean much then, but it means a lot now.

Looking back on her career and her voice, Engler thought it would have lasted a lot longer.

“Nothing like it; dynamic, powerful and range out the wazoo,” said Engler. “She blew it away at the Super Bowl, the anthem. It was… chills. Amazing.”

Dionne Warwick Reschedules Concert At The Palace Theatre

GREENSBURG (KDKA) — Singer Dionne Warwick has rescheduled a concert at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg following the death of her cousin Whitney Houston.

The concert was scheduled for Valentine’s Day, but officials have now pushed it back to March 2 at 8 p.m.

Officials with The Palace Theatre say all tickets from the Valentine’s Day show will be honored on the rescheduled date in March.

Houston passed away Saturday, on the eve of the Grammy Awards, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

Crews Deal With Icy Temperatures During House Fire In Mt. Lebanon

MOUNT LEBANON (KDKA) — A family returned to their Mount Lebanon home Sunday to find the outside of the structure on fire.

The home is located on Meadowcraft Avenue.

Officials say extra fire crews had to be called in because of the cold weather.

“We went to a full second alarm for manpower and rotated mutual aid crews in and out as needed to rehab the guys on scene,” said Deputy Chief Joe Thuransky, of the Mount Lebanon Fire Department.

Authorities say the fire may have started in a second-floor fireplace.

The Port Authority brought a bus in so firefighters could warm up.

Crews Battle Another Fire In Jeannette

JEANNETTE (KDKA) — A fire sent crews to a home in Westmoreland County Sunday evening.

The blaze broke out after 5 p.m. at North 3rd Street and Gaskill Avenue in Jeannette.

Jeannette officials increased patrols in certain neighborhoods earlier this month as the community has been plagued recently by a string of suspicious fires.

However, there is no word yet on what sparked the fire or whether there were any injuries.

EAST FINLEY (KDKA) – An accident at a mining site in Washington County left one worker injured Saturday night.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the accident happened at a Consol Energy site on Enon Church Road in East Finley around 5:40 p.m.

A worker was taken to a local hospital after the accident.

Details of the accident and the worker’s condition have not been released.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins nearly burned the goal lights out during an 8-5 win over the Jets Saturday afternoon.

Now, they will look to keep the momentum going tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Pittsburgh fell behind 2-0 early, but four unanswered goals by Dustin Jeffrey, James Neal, Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang put the Penguins ahead for good.

Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Richard Park also scored for the Penguins.

The win over the Jets vaulted the Penguins over New Jersey in the standings and pulled them within two points of the Flyers.

Malkin finished the game with a goal and four assists to give him 67 points this season. He is now five points ahead of Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos in the NHL scoring race.

His goal was also the 30th of the season

Speaking of Tampa Bay, they enter tonight’s contest on a high note having earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

Mathieu Garon (17-13-4, 2.85 GAA, .902 save percentage) stopped 26 shots to make first period goals by Steve Downie and Stamkos hold up.

In addition to leading his team in points with 62, Stamkos is leading the league in goals with 37.

Martin St. Louis is second on the team in points with 50 (16 goals, 34 assists).

Vincent Lecavalier seems to be back on track this season with 45 points (21 goals, 24 assists) in 54 games.

Currently, the Lightning (24-24-6, 54 points) are eight points out of a playoff spot. Their main struggles this season appear to be in goal.

Dwayne Roloson is only 7-11-2 with a 3.62 GAA and a .881 save percentage this season.

It is unknown if Roloson or Garon will be in net against the Penguins at this point.

Against Pittsburgh, Roloson is 5-5-2 with a 3.15 GAA and .900 save percentage, while Garon is 1-2 with a 4.88 GAA and .867 save percentage.

For Pittsburgh, it is not yet known if Marc-Andre Fleury (29-13-3, 2.35 GAA, .911 save percentage) will start on back-to-back days or if Brent Johnson (2-6-2, 3.10 GAA, .885 save percentage) will get the nod tonight.

Against Tampa Bay, Fleury is 10-10-3 with a 2.43 GAA and .910 save percentage, while Johnson is 7-2-2 with one tie to go along with a 2.52 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

If history holds true, Malkin may very well add to his point total tonight.

In 20 career games against Tampa Bay, Malkin has nine goals and 10 assists.

Nine of those assists came on the power play.

This will be the third meeting between the teams this season. The teams split the previous two games in Tampa Bay.

The Bolts won 4-1 on Nov. 17 and the Penguins won the most recent game 6-3 on Jan. 15.

Man Arrested In Connection With Death Of 11-Year-Old Boy

KNOXVILLE (KDKA) – A man was arrested in connection with an alleged beating death of an 11-year-old boy Saturday night.

According to police, the incident happened at a home in the 100-block of Knox Avenue around 11:40 p.m.

The child’s mother called 911 and reported that her boyfriend had assaulted her son.

The boyfriend has been identified as 29-year-old Anthony Bush.

Bush lives at the home and was watching the child while the mother was working Saturday night. Bush allegedly disciplined the child by beating him with various objects around the apartment.

When police arrived, they found the child on the floor suffering from an apparent head wound. The boy also had no pulse.

Officers performed CPR at the scene and were able to restore a light pulse. The child was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital before being transferred to Children’s Hospital, where he died just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

Bush is being charged with homicide in this case.

No other details have been released at this time.

Fire Damages Westmoreland Co. Church

ARONA (KDKA) – A church in Westmoreland County suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out late Saturday night.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the fire broke out at Church of the Nazarene in the 2000-block of Main Street in Arona around 11 p.m.

There are no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Crews from several different fire companies responded to the fire.

Pittsburghers Bundle Up Against Bitter Cold Temperatures

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s some of the coldest weather of the year so far, but that didn’t stop some Pittsburghers from braving the elements on a busy Saturday evening.

With wind chills at times below zero, people bundled up against the cold and howling wind. Icicles formed on steam pipes.

And if you lost your earmuffs, it was nice to have a friend with warm gloves.

But there’s at least one Pittsburgher out there who is enjoying this deep freeze.

What we didn’t expect was this reaction.

“I love cold,” said Betty Elias, a local resident. “I think people who go to Florida are nuts. I really do.”

That though was probably a minority opinion.

“Even though she’s my best friend, I think she’s crazy,” said Debbie Zitner, Elias’ friend. “I absolutely hate it.”

And so did the people whose driving skills were lacking today, but tow truck drivers probably loved it. The salt trucks were out in force as well, whether it was in private parking lots or on the highways.

Meanwhile, the Auto Zone in Hampton Township did a banner business in replacing wiper blades, some of which were damaged by ice.

“It had a hunk of rubber out of it,” said customer Ted Barnes. “I think my daughter scraped it too hard.”

Even some people who decided to stay indoors had problems today, including one homeowner who built a fire to help heat things up. The creosote in the chimney caught fire.

The house was saved and no one was hurt, but it brought a warning from the chief.

“Tip to homeowners, have your chimney checked yearly before you start using it,” said Chief Randy Dolton, of the Penn Hills Volunteer Fire Department.

With some of the lowest temperatures of the year, a similar warning to be careful using space heaters and candles in the home applies as well.

Officials are also advising drivers to take it slow and watch for icy spots on local roads.

Ward Responds To NFL Network Report

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Hines Ward and his representatives were basically blindsided by an NFL Network report Friday night that stated the Pittsburgh Steelers were planning to release the 15-year veteran.

Ward’s camp had neither heard of the report until last night nor had they heard from the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ed Bouchette also reported Saturday that there has been nothing decided yet in regard to Ward’s future with the team, according to Steelers sources.

Ward took to Facebook Saturday to repeat his desire to be back with the Steelers next season.

He wrote: “I don’t normally like to respond to rumors, but as I’ve said all along, I want to finish my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And, as I’ve already told the organization, I am willing to work with them to restructure my contract to make sure this happens.”

Meanwhile, Omar Khan will reportedly remain with the Steelers.

The team’s salary cap guru and contract negotiator was a candidate to become the general manager of the St. Louis Rams, but several outlets reported Saturday that Khan has pulled his name from consideration.

Music Icon Whitney Houston Dies At 48

LOS ANGELES (AP / CBS Pittsburgh) — Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause of her death is unknown. Houston’s body was found in her 4th floor room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

News of Houston’s death came on the eve of music’s biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It’s a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday’s ceremony. Houston’s longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.

“The time that I first saw her singing in her mother’s act in a club … it was such a stunning impact,” Davis told “Good Morning America.”

“To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine,” he added.

Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with “Whitney Houston,” which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. “Saving All My Love for You” brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. “How Will I Know,” ”You Give Good Love” and “The Greatest Love of All” also became hit singles.

Another multiplatinum album, “Whitney,” came out in 1987 and included hits like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

The New York Times wrote that Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity.”

Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the “Soul Train Awards” in 1989.

“Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?” she told Katie Couric in 1996. “You’re not black enough for them. I don’t know. You’re not R&B enough. You’re very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them.”

Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop’s pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.

But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

“When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place,” she told Rolling Stone in 1993. “You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that’s their image. It’s part of them, it’s not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody’s angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy.”

It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America’s sweetheart.

In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with “The Bodyguard.” Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy’s record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the “Bodyguard” soundtrack was named album of the year.

She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with “Waiting to Exhale” and “The Preacher’s Wife.” Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, “My Love Is Your Love,” in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.”

But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time “The Preacher’s Wife” was released, “(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. … I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. … I wasn’t happy by that point in time. I was losing myself.”

In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.
Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown’s reality show, “Being Bobby Brown,” was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared “crack is whack,” was often parodied.

She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album “I Look To You.” The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on “Good Morning America” went awry as Houston’s voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Missing Teen Found, Arrested In Prostitution Sting

OAKLAND (KDKA) – Investigators say a 14-year-old girl who had been missing for almost one year has been taken into custody along with two adults in a prostitution sting.

City detectives had been looking for the teenager since March of 2011 when she was reported missing from a Three Rivers Youth juvenile facility.

Police said when they found her; she was working as a prostitute.

The three were arrested after detectives set up a meeting at the Quality Inn in Oakland.

Last month, authorities say detectives received a tip that provocative pictures of the girl had been posted online. Detectives found an advertisement page with a phone number on the Internet.

According to the criminal complaint, an undercover officer called the juvenile who agreed to a one-hour appointment with a second female. When the officer got a room at the Quality Inn, investigators say the juvenile, 22-year-old Danielle Gianoni of Homewood and 36-year-old William Miller showed up.

Dr. Mary Burke, of Carlow University, explains how a teenage runaway can get caught up in prostitution.

“So, you have someone who is out there who is a perpetrator, who wants to make money and who wants to exploit someone’s vulnerability; and this person, be it a man or a woman, will lure this child into a situation such as this young woman has been involved in,” Dr. Burke said.

The three were arrested on a variety of prostitution-related charges.

Miller is facing counts of sexual abuse of children and transporting someone for prostitution.

The juvenile was taken to Shuman Center. Miller and Gianoni were being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Malkin’s 5-Points Fuels Pens Past Jets

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) — The Penguins fell behind early, but fought back to erase a two-goal deficit in a wild and high-scoring 8-5 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Saturday afternoon at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Evgeni Malkin, playing in his 400th regular-season game, once again led the way for the Penguins. He tallied a goal and four assists, adding to his NHL-leading point total.

It was also a memorable night for Richard Park who scored his 100th career NHL goal, as well as Kris Letang who had two goals and an assist and Jordan Staal who had a goal and an assist in his first game back from injury.

“It was a wide-open game, and you know, obviously, we wanted to play a little bit of a tighter game,” Staal said. “We kind of gave them one too many chances to get back in the game and we obviously did a great job offensively … but we have to play better defensively if we want to keep winning like that.”

James Neal, Chris Kunitz and Dustin Jeffery also scored for the Pens.

Kyle Wellwood, Alexander Burmistrov, Tim Stapleton, Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little had goals for Winnipeg.

It was a less than memorable night both goaltenders though.

The Jets’ Ondrej Pavelec stopped just 31 of 39 shots, and the Pens’ Marc-Andre Fleury wasn’t much sharper, stopping 20 of 25 shots.

The Jets raced out to a 2-1 lead barely eight minutes into the game on goals by Wellwood and Burmistrov.

But Burmistrov’s 10th goal of the season seemed to wake up the Penguins, who responded behind the brilliant play of Malkin.

Jeffery got the Pens first goal with assists from Staal and Letang.

Then, Malkin set up Neal’s 29th goal by flipping a faceoff back to Neal at the top of the circle to tie the game at 2.

Early in the second, Malkin fed Kunitz — with a secondary assist from Fleury — to put the Pens in front. He jumpstarted a 2-on-1 break midway through the second period that ended with Letang scoring his sixth of the season.

Malkin then netted his 30th of the season on a breakaway late in the second period by deking his way past a sprawled Pavelec.

The Jets drew within 5-4 early in the third period when Byfuglien beat Fleury with a wrist shot, but Park pushed the Pens back in front by two when he deflected Brooks Orpik’s shot from the point by Pavelec.

The forward, a 14-year veteran, raised his arms in triumph after reaching the 100-goal milestone.

Park’s goal was a pleasant surprise, but the Penguins hope Staal’s return would help take some pressure off the line of Malkin, Neal and Kunitz.

Staal, who hadn’t played since Jan. 6 due to a left knee injury, scored his first since Dec. 29 in the third period after Dupuis stripped a Winnipeg player and fed Staal in the slot.

The Penguins don’t have much time to enjoy the win. The Tampa Bay Lightning come to town next for a game at 7 p.m. Sunday.

At Least 1 Dead In Lawrence Co. Fire

LITTLE BEAVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – An early Saturday morning fire in Lawrence County has left one person dead and another injured.

According to state police, the fire broke out at a home on Scott Wallace Road in Little Beaver Township around 4:55 a.m.

Four people were inside the home when the fire broke out. Two were able to get out safely.

Vaughnie Schwartz, 51, of Beaver Falls, was unable to get out of the house and died in the fire.

In addition, 29-year-old Donald Jurasko suffered moderate injuries in the fire. His condition in currently unknown.

The cause of the fire is also unknown and the fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate.

Winter Storm Advisories, Warnings In Effect

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Snow moved in Friday afternoon and will stick around for most of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday for the following counties:

Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland.

The total accumulation expected in these areas is anywhere between two and four inches.

A Winter Storm Warning is also in effect for the Fayette and Westmoreland Ridges until 6 a.m. Sunday.

These areas can expect to see a total of about four to six inches of snow.

According to KDKA-TV’s Jon Burnett, the heaviest snowfall can be expected Saturday morning and early afternoon.

Breaks in snow can be expected later this afternoon with some flurries and an occasional snow shower.

This latest round of winter weather will move out of the area Sunday morning.
