Castro doubled off the top of the center-field fence against Bryan Morris (1-2), and Carlos Pena was intentionally walked one out later. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Castro scored when he beat second baseman Neil Walker’s throw home on Matt Dominguez’s fielder’s choice grounder.

Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle argued the call with plate umpire C.B. Bucknor and was ejected. Pinch-hitter J.D. Martinez followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Rookie Jose Cisnero struck out five in 3 2-3 scoreless relief innings for his first major league win. Jose Veras pitched a scoreless 11th for his sixth save as Houston won for the second time in three games since losing six in a row.

Chris Carter’s run-scoring single in the eighth inning tied the game at 2 and ended Mark Melancon’s string of 13 consecutive scoreless relief appearances, covering 13 innings.

Houston’s Jose Altuve had three hits to raise his batting average to .342 after being activated from the bereavement list before the game. Altuve missed three games after his grandmother died in his native Venezuela.

Andrew McCutchen hit two doubles and Brandon Inge had two hits for Pittsburgh, which lost for the second time in nine games.

Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett held Houston to one run in seven innings while allowing five hits and four walks, but wound up with a no-decision when Melancon could not hold the lead. Burnett struck out seven to raise his National League-leading total to 79. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his 10 starts this season.

The Astros’ Erik Bedard gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings with three strikeouts and no walks in his first career start against Pittsburgh. The veteran left-hander was the Pirates’ opening day starter last season, but was released on Aug. 30 after going 8-14.

Inge put Pittsburgh in front 2-1 in the sixth when he hit a two-out RBI single to left field off Bedard.

The Pirates scored the game’s first run on consecutive doubles by McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez with two outs in the first inning.

Houston tied in the fifth when Altuve delivered a two-out RBI single.

Earlier Saturday, Mamula’s Market in Monaca was the first stop for a lot of people hoping to cash in on the $600 million jackpot.

“I would live very well,” said Trish Hopkins, who was in line to get her ticket. “I would travel, and nobody would probably see me again around here.”

Of course, that all depends on having the winning ticket. The odds of being elected president are better.

“There’s a chance you can win – a small chance, a very small chance – but it’s fun to dream,” said Vivian Fitch, who was getting her ticket Saturday morning.

Some customers at the Co-Go’s in McKees Rocks couldn’t believe the jackpot. The thought of winning inspired some noble plans.

“If I did, I would want to clean up all of McKees Rocks,” said Cocoa Allchin. “Fix, you know… the people that don’t have the money; just fix everything. Have an opportunity for people that don’t have jobs to create jobs for everybody.”

“Buy a house; see who else I could help out,” said Theresa Snaith. “My mother would be top priority, get her a house because she rents now. She’s up in age.”

Even though the odds of becoming a movie star are better, Patricia Saffold hopes that buying individual tickets will improve her chances.

“I heard you have a better chance of getting different numbers; because sometimes you play like 10 altogether and get them all on one ticket, you get the same numbers,” she said.

The odds of winning may be 175 million to one; but if you don’t play, there is no chance of winning the Powerball at all.

Khamal Fooks, 18, and Rayshon Shields, 21, are charged with criminal homicide and robbery in the death of 54-year-old Roger Griffin.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Zara Street.

Griffin was found on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

He was pronounced dead at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, police say a witness reported that Griffin allegedly wanted to buy heroin but the suspects demanded money.

Griffin was wounded when he tried to get away from the home, the Post-Gazette reports.

Fooks and Shields are being held in jail.

The 20-month-old victim remains in Children’s Hospital clinging to life while his stepfather sits in jail, charged with assaulting him.

Medics rushed Malachi Patterson to the hospital Friday after a 911 call that the toddler was unresponsive at an apartment in the Chestnut Ridge housing complex near Blairsville.

He had bruises on his head, face and torso that doctors said were not the result of an accident.

The mother’s husband, who is not the boy’s biological father, is charged with three counts in connection with the alleged abuse.

Juan Campbell, 27, told police he did not abuse the child.

He is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.

Neighbor Ricky Blazek told KDKA’s Kym Gable: “I’m glad he was arrested. My neighbor was telling me about when they brought the little boy out. They had him covered in a sheet.”

Meanwhile, doctors are trying to do everything they can for the young victim.

“Essentially, I’ve been told he’s clinging to life,” said Indiana District Attorney Patrick Dougherty. “So, it’s minute-by-minute is what I’m told.”

He told KDKA his office is handling this as a “very serious case of abuse.”

The boy’s mother was not home at the time. She was in the hospital after giving birth to another child.

Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown win, the most in horse racing history.

Orb finished fourth.

The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday’s race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Orb’s five-race winning streak ended on an overcast, windy day at Pimlico Race Course. The brown colt had not lost since Nov. 24.

Oxbow was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, where he made a move for the lead in the final turn but faded.

In the Preakness, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens took control at the outset and never relinquished the advantage.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. He went off as a 15-1 underdog and paid $32.80, $12 and $8.80.

Itsmyluckyday finished second and paid $7.80 and $5. Mylute paid $5.20 to show.

Mylute, with Rosie Napravnik in the saddle, came in fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Racing at the track where she earned her first career victory, Napravnik was attempting to become the first female jockey to win the Preakness.

State police say the accident happened just before 3 a.m. on State Route 358 at Bean Road in Perry Township.

Authorities have now identified the victim as 21-year-old Cody Lawrence of Sandy Lake, Pa.

According to state police, a 1999 Honda Accord CP was headed east on State Route 358 when Lawrence lost control trying to negotiate a sharp curve in the road.

The vehicle struck a mailbox and then hit an embankment.

Officials say the vehicle continued traveling along the top of the embankment, going through some brush and small trees, and then rolled back onto the road.

The car then rolled again and came to a rest on its wheels in a yard, state police said.

Lawrence, who state police say was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:40 a.m.

The star forward hasn’t played since Jan. 27 after undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk. He’ll rejoin Ottawa’s lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Senators trailing 2-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“I’m excited to have a chance to play again,” Spezza said. “I feel ready to play.”

The 29-year-old will immediately add depth to a struggling offense and power play.

“We’re excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we’re looking forward to it,” said Senators coach Paul MacLean. “We certainly feel that he’s going to give us some help on the power play, for sure. He can help us quite a bit there.”

The Senators’ power play has gone 1 for 7 through the first two games.

Spezza’s minutes will be monitored, and MacLean suggested his time on the ice could vary depending on the number of power plays the Senators get.

Spezza is expected to line up with Milan Michalek and possibly Colin Greening.

“He’s such a skilled playmaker that if you’re on the ice with him you know to keep your stick on the ice because he finds a way to get the puck to you,” Zack Smith said. “When you’re playing with guys like that, you’re just more prone to go to the net and go to those areas and be more confident.”

Spezza hopes his timing comes back quickly.

“Basically I’m just going to go out and work hard and be smart,” he said. “I expect to play well.

“I wouldn’t play unless I felt I could help the team and contribute.”

Spezza had two goals and three assists in just five games during the regular season.

“It’s going to be important to be in his face right away and make sure he doesn’t have time and space,” said Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang. “He’s got good hands, so he can make you look really bad. So if you’re in his face and have a good gap, you have a better chance of having success against him.”

The Senators are undefeated at Scotiabank Place in the playoffs this year.

“We need to play to our identity,” MacLean said. “We have to try and establish our game first. What hurt us in the first two games is not getting off to a (good) start, and we’re down in the first three minutes of both games and catch-up hockey is losing hockey.”

Despite being pulled after allowing three goals in Friday’s game, Craig Anderson will get the start Sunday.

“They’re going to be desperate and we know this is going to be the toughest test yet,” Sidney Crosby said. “We need to start well, but just play a complete game and give ourselves a chance.”

Well, okay, maybe not the same sort of mirror that might immediately spring to mind. More like one of those funhouse mirrors, actually.

You know, the kind you step in front of that mars your own image so far beyond recognition it’s laughable?

Sound familiar?

Once upon a time, the Storm were Pittsburgh’s property. The Pittsburgh Gladiators, one of the Arena Football League’s seminal (experimental) franchises, competed here from 1987 through 1990, and although they didn’t win any titles during that time, they were an instant success, on the field and in the Civic Arena stands.

That’s where we step inside the funhouse.

Co-owner Bob Greis took advantage of his business liaisons in the Sunshine State to turn the Gladiators into the Storm, allegedly leaving Pittsburgh, at least in part, over dissatisfaction with the state of the Igloo.

Sound familiar?

The Storm then got over the hump, eventually capturing an unprecedented five ArenaBowl championships. They made the playoffs for the first two decades of the original league’s existence.

Longtime head coach Tim Marcum, who won three of those and was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1998 before handing the reins to Dave Ewart in 2011, will forever be remembered as one of the most successful coaches in the sport’s history.

Sound familiar?

CONSOL Energy Center, which opened while that franchise–not to mention the league itself–was being rebuilt, has its fair share of mirrors. But it has been anything but a fun house.

The Power enter Week 9, the virtual midpoint of their third fledgling season, having gone over a full calendar year between home-field victories. It took the greatest comeback in AFL history–or, depending on the color of your sunglasses, the most horrifying choke–to pull off the last one, a 57-54 overtime decision over the Orlando Predators Apr. 14, 2012.

Even despite the growing, glaring incompetence throughout the league, I couldn’t have dreamed that if I tried, and as I look in the funhouse mirror, it turns my oblong stomach just to think it, much less give it utterance.

Remember that first year, when the Power, like the erstwhile Gladiators (not to be confused with the relatively new ones from Cleveland), were the flavor of the month? Remember when we packed the relatively new building and led ourselves to believe a second-tier sport could actually thrive in Pittsburgh for a change?

They played in overtime that first night, too, if you’ll recall, stumbling against the Philadelphia Soul before a league-record crowd and national TV audience.

So who’s that guy on the other side of the mirror?

Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Lynn Swann joined the Elways, the Ditkas, and the Jaws’–er, Jawses–er–eh, screw it, Jaworskis–of the world by bringing the Power into the AFL with the help of local hotel moguls Matt and Lance Shaner. Their tenure, by and large, has been an abject failure, as anyone who has been privy to and/or cracked jokes about dwindling crowds can attest.

The key to winning over those crowds, and winning back the dwindling number of die-hards, admittedly, is not easily done. But it is easily stated. Put a successful product on the field, and show a commitment to sustaining that success. Greis and company did that, and when they didn’t, they found others who were willing to and knew how to. The Swann-Shaner group, to date, has not, and this, as much as any other reason, is why the Power and the Storm, though forged from the same Steel City iron, have so little in common anymore.

Under their watch, the Power have an alarming history of backing the wrong horse. Those first few months of somewhat respectable play, perhaps with a pinch of beginner’s luck, don’t delete that fact. Labor disputes in which grown men–on both sides–behave like children, coaches who burn bridges and drive away popular players, subordinates who are chosen, evidently, because of status, replacements with good intentions but no recent history of excellence, and talent that displays a glorious absence of…well, talent.

In order to save face in this town, the leadership of this franchise had better hope the merry-go-round of quarterbacks located adjacent to the funhouse stops at Steve Sheffield, and that his play last Saturday night signals a new direction for the Power. While CONSOL Energy Center’s other tenants were rallying in Game 6 in the Nassau Coliseum, the Texas Tech standout, who enjoyed cups of coffee with the AFL’s Spokane Shock and San Antonio Talons, was rallying in Week 8 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Sheffield completed 19 of 35 attempts for 272 yards and six TD’s in a 53-48 upset of the East Division rival Soul. It was exactly what the Power needed to keep their postseason hopes on life support following missed opportunity after missed opportunity by Sheffield’s overwhelmed predecessor, Jordan Jefferson, against the Talons and Predators. But was it just an erratic blip on the EKG of a dying patient?

Tonight the Power face one of the most dynamic players in the league, Storm quarterback and 2004 AFL Rookie of the Year Adrian McPherson. McPherson, who has made plenty of big plays for the AFL’s third-highest-scoring offense, is just a few more away from becoming the league’s fifth–or, at worst, sixth–2,000-yard passer in the 2013 season. While passing for 34 scores against only three picks, the fleet-footed FSU product has led the league with 268 rush yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

I have the utmost respect for the gameday peons of the Pittsburgh Power, and all they have done to help make my labor-of-love coverage look remotely professional. It’s way past time for those who create their jobs to show this city that same professionalism.

It’s time for that Power defense, led by Chris LeFlore and Sergio Gilliam, to once again live up to that number one overall ranking, and hold an opponent below the league scoring average for what would be the fifth time in the last six games.

It’s time for that Power offense, led by Sheffield and Mike Washington, who ranks among the AFL’s top five with 66 receptions, to do some more damage in No. 66′s barn.

It’s time for that Power special teams to be as special as we thought they would be when All-Arena selection P.J. Berry joined the club over a year ago.

It’s time for that Power management team to be proactive and visionary if they don’t.

It’s time for the Power to be able to sell something besides vague euphemisms and cheap hot dogs. Like, for example, playoff tickets. They only need to finish ahead of three teams in the American Conference to make that happen.

It’s time for the Power to live up to that marketing slogan–oh, you know the one I’m thinking of–right now.

Otherwise, it’s time for the Power, from CEO to towel boy, to take a long, thoughtful look in the mirror.

Any mirror they can find.

The new test which has the left front of the vehicle strike a five-foot tall barrier at 40 MPH is meant to duplicate a car hitting a pole or tree or a car crossing the center lane on a highway and striking another car at the corner of the vehicle.

As consumers look for better gas mileage and room to carry passengers and cargo, many have turned to these smaller SUV’s or crossovers making it one of the fastest growing segments of the automotive market.

Five vehicles in the class, The Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Buick Encore, Jeep Patriot and Ford Escape were given “poor” ratings.

Rothfus believes we need to address the problems immigration, he stated immigrants with visas “stay longer” than the time allotted. He says that is a major problem with immigration and it needs to be addressed.

Sen. Bob Casey also joined Rob Pratte and spoke of the pressing issues of the moment, issues like the IRS scandal and Syria.

Casey stated the IRS’ “conduct was completely inappropriate” when they targeted Tea Party members.

Casey’s idea for defeating the regime in Syria is to attack their advantage. Syria has an air advantage, Casey’s idea is to form a coalition of allies and take out Syria’s planes while they are grounded.

Casey sees a need to help Syria because the government has killed over 100,000 of their own people.

On Thursday, Whaley was promoted to General Manager. Bob Pompeani asked Whaley how much of the Steelers philosophy will carry over to his role with the Bills, and Whaley said a lot.

“I think that the main thing I learned is it’s a full organizational effort. The organization has to be committed to accountability and hard work,” Whaley said.

Whaley added that a singular focus and goal is to be able to compete for championships, and that’s what’s starting to build in Buffalo.

“Anybody in this field is competitive, so you’ve got to take that competitive nature and harness it and realize that losing is unacceptable,” Whaley said.

He added that “every day that you walk into this building to try to get better and accomplish that goal of a championship.”

What’s the reason for the turnaround?

“I think a lot of it has to do with trusting myself, trusting my stuff, trusting my defense, trusting my catcher,” Locke told Bob Pompeani. “I know the first few go-arounds up here in the big leagues weren’t like that for me. It was tough for me to figure out things.”

Locke has had several different pitching coaches during his professional career, but likes working with pitching coach Ray Searage.

“Ray’s been great to me, to everybody that I’ve seen him work with. (He) puts a lot of trust and a lot of confidence in his pitchers, and cares about each and every one us a real lot,” Locke said.

The Junior League of Pittsburgh hosted its sixth annual “Touch a Truck” event in the Strip District.

Children got the opportunity to touch and see more than 30 trucks, including bulldozers, fire trucks, semi-trucks and other vehicles.

The family of 2-year-old Maddox Derkosh, who was tragically killed at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium last November, was also in attendance. They were taking toy truck donation for “Trucks for Maddox,” which was started in honor of Derkosh who loved trucks.

“All of us that are a part of this want to see smiles on the children’s faces,” spokesperson Teri Kemp said.

The truck donations will go to 13 local charities.

Yep, that’s correct, go right at the reigning James Norris Memorial Trophy winner.

That 6-foot, 185-pound, 22-year-old Swede who skates like a gale-force breeze and has off-the-charts skill? He’s a liability right now.

So make him pay.

Make the Ottawa Senators pay.

He’s a weak link; at least right now, in this very moment.

Crazy as all this sounds, as the Penguins took a 2-0 series advantage on Friday, with Game 3 headed to Ottawa on Sunday, Karlsson is hurting the Senators and, by extension, helping the Penguins.

There is generally something noble, a deep measure of gallantry and courage that comes with playing injured. One normally gains respect from his teammates for such an act, is lauded by fans and commands admiration from teammates.

But there is a definite threshold, and one that Karlsson is crossing that was ridiculously evident as the Penguins took Game 2 with a 4-3 victory at CONSOL Energy Center.

Truly, one can be too injured to play, can be out there trying to grit through an injury and — during the progression of such an event — be having a counterproductive impact on his team.

For me, that’s where Karlsson is for the Ottawa Senators.

If I’m a Pittsburgh Penguins forward (and again, this sounds crazy on the surface) but right now my eyes should be lighting up if Karlsson is the player charged with the duty of having to provide a measure of defense to offset my offensive skills.

Karlsson, who was injured when his Achilles was sliced by Matt Cooke’s skate in a game on Feb. 13, was embarrassed on that very same sheet of ice on Friday night.

Case in point, with the Penguins leading 1-0 in the first period, Sidney Crosby took a pass in the neutral zone and met a back-peddling Karlsson just as he was going to penetrate through the blue line. Crosby then faked as if he was going to dump the puck into the zone, but, rather, in one fluid motion, yanked the puck back inside, forcing Karlsson to glance down.

Game over.

From there, Karlsson whiffed with both his stick and foot in an attempt to dispossess Crosby and, just a flash later, the lamp was lit, the crowd was chaotic.

Karlsson’s misplay — which was obviously related to his lack of mobility as he still is battling that Achilles injury — was the reason the game became 2-0 and Crosby was on his way to a hat trick.

Now let’s get something square here: There isn’t a ton of embarrassment to be extracted from getting made to look like a fool by Sidney Crosby, one of the finest talents to ever touch a hockey stick.

But, also fair is this: Karlsson isn’t some down-the-liner. No, he is, when healthy, also one of the world’s best.

Which gets us back to the most logical deduction — Karlsson is still very much injured, and, by extension, a liability to Ottawa’s efforts and an assistance to Pittsburgh’s.

In Game 2, Karlsson had 15:37 in ice time, compared to Game 1, when he tallied 26:58.

Of the reduction in time, Senators coach Paul MacLean said, “On our team, the best players play; Erik wasn’t one of the best players so he didn’t play.”

MacLean is onto something. Right now, playing as badly injured as he is, Karlsson isn’t one of the best players Ottawa has.

The Penguins need to recognize this, and take advantage of it, every time Karlsson is on the ice.

Kempic first explained that Columbia Gas is in the business of “distribution,” and Columbia doesn’t “care who you purchase your gas from.” 

Columbia gas helps keep Pennsylvania working with continuing projects like their pipeline replacement program. 

The Pipeline replacement program is to replace the old metal pipes with “state of the art plastic pipe,” and there’s work for years to come.  Kempic stated Columbia will be “replacing 100 miles of pipe a year for the next 15 years” and that it’s “a lot of labor” which means a lot of jobs.

Patti Janowski of Janowski’s Farm and Green House also joined Rob Pratte to discuss the Harvest Wine Festival. 

The Harvest Wine Festival is July 20th from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. and will feature six wineries, food, hayrides and antique cars display. 

Janowski has been working at Janowski’s since marrying into the family, she stated that she is “fortunate to work with family,” and “it takes all employees to make the business run.”

It happened just after 3 a.m. Saturday morning near Mifflin Street and Searight Avenue in Uniontown.

Police say a 20-year-old man was shot in the stomach following a fight after a party ended.

The victim has now been identified as Rashad Harris.

He died after being taken to the hospital.

So far, there have been no arrests.

NewsRadio 1020 KDKA’s Rob Pratte was talked to Sam Rosenberg of Impex, John Hudson of J.P. Hudson & Associates, Bob Meinert and Lou Gentile of CSI Investigations about corporate security practices.

These experts discussed corporate security, the practice of corporations hiring outside firms to educate, investigate and to keep companies safe.

Hudson explained that security firms “start with the client first” to address their needs and that it takes “a lot of listening” to understand the clients’ concerns.

Many of the corporations who hire corporate security consultants have the same concerns, Gentile says that it’s his job to “represent that company” and he has “to take assignments seriously.”  School violence and workplace violence make corporate security an important service, Rosenberg stated that “terrorists only have to win once, the good guy has to win all the time.”

Initially after the incident, police mistakenly said 50-year-old Joseph Lupo had died after being shot.

Tuesday night though, Lupo was listed as in the hospital in critical condition.

Police say Lupo’s wife, 50-year-old Caroline Lupo, indicated that her husband shot himself after shooting her three times during a suspected domestic dispute at their Mahoning Township home.

Caroline Lupo is recovering from her injuries.

However, police say Joseph Lupo eventually died of his injuries Friday.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. on Ligonier Street in Latrobe.

Police say 42-year-old Charles Bancroft was riding a motorcycle north on the street when a Ford Explorer hit him from behind.

Bancroft was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a helmet.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Down 4-1, Pittsburgh started its comeback in the sixth when Chris Carter, usually a designated hitter, dropped Andrew McCutchen’s fly ball for a three-base error and Garrett Jones followed with a double.

Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the eighth, a 462-foot drive that cleared the right-field stands and went into the Allegheny River on one hop.

Starling Marte singled off Edgar Gonzalez (0-1) leading off the ninth, and Travis Snider hit into a forceout, with the Astros failing to turn a double play with a late throw to first.

McCutchen’s single put runners at the corners, and Gonzalez fielded Brandon Inge’s comebacker and dropped it for an error as he turned to throw to second, missing his chance to start an inning-ending double play.

Neil Walker took a called third strike with a full count, and Martin lifted a full-count pitch to short right-center field, where Elmore settled under the ball and Paredes slammed into him as the ball hit his glove and fell to the field.

Justin Wilson (4-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as the Pirates (25-17) won for the seventh time in eight games to move a season-high eight games over .500.

Andrew McCutchen homered and had three hits for Pittsburgh.

Houston’s 11-31 start is its worst and matched Miami for the worst record in the major leagues.

Astros starter Jordan Lyles allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits in five innings and is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in six career starts against Pittsburgh.

Pirates starter Jeanmar Gomez gave up four runs — three earned — and five hits in 4 2-3 innings.

Houston built a 4-1 lead on Jason Castro’s sacrifice fly in the first and a three-run third that included Matt Dominguez’s solo homer, Elmore’s run-scoring single and a throwing error by Walker at second.

McCutchen homered in the first.

Police served a search warrant this afternoon at the residence on Susan Drive near Blairsville.

The boy, who has not been identified, was at home at the Chestnut Ridge Public Housing Project in Burrell Township when calls came into 911 about a child not breathing just after 2:30 a.m.

KDKA’s Ralph Iannotti Reports:

“We are still in the process of gathering information,” said Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty. “The state police are here, they’re doing… we’re executing a search warrant on the property right now, looking for any evidence which would give us some more information into this matter.”

When the child arrived at the hospital, officials say the boy had life-threatening injuries to his head and torso. He sustained most of the injuries to the left side of his head.

The boy’s mother was not home at time. She is in the hospital after having another child.

The boy was reportedly at home with his mother’s husband and a grandmother.

The woman’s husband was not the child’s biological father.

The boy is reportedly on life support.

According to court papers, a doctor wrote that if the child dies, his death should be treated as a homicide.

Neighbor Celeste Steeves said Friday night the family had just recently moved in.

Inside, the Pens’ mascot, Iceburgh, greeted Macin with a bag full of junior ice hockey equipment.

“I love this!” Macin said of the new gear.

Like any super fan, little Macin immediately grabbed his new stick and started slapping the puck.

Macin caught the attention of the Penguins’ organization after they saw his YouTube video and KDKA’s story of him effortlessly reciting the names of the Pens’ players by jersey number.

“Stories happen during the playoffs, but this one really blew us as away; and we thought we have to find out who this kid is,” said Tom McMillian, of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Macin’s mom Lindsay says her son, who at 2-years-old could count to 100, took notice of the game when the DeFazio family regularly had Penguins’ hockey games on.

“He would ask, what number’s who, and it just went from there,” said Lindsay.

His parents say the team’s gift could be laying the foundation for a future player.

People who live on Fairley Road say one of their neighbor’s yards is an eyesore that is ruining their neighborhood.

“It’s embarrassing to have friends over or bring new friends over,” said Tom White, a neighbor.

“There’s a Santa Claus urinating in the driveway, where he should put his car,” Joanne Hebda, another neighbor, said.

KDKA’s Bob Allen Reports:

Robert Ansell owns the house and his brother, William, lives there.

A judge has ordered them to remove the toys and Christmas decorations in the yard by May 29 or face a $3,000 fine. It’s the culmination of a six-year feud that started over Christmas decorations.

“The neighbors didn’t like my Christmas display, and the township took sides, and decided they were going to find whatever way possible to shut it down,” said William Ansell.

Robert Ansell accuses the township of selective enforcement.

“They’ve got weeds, they’ve got building materials, they’ve got a shed falling down out back; and they’re sitting here worrying about me, whether I have toys and Christmas decorations in my yard,” said Ansell. “That ain’t right.”

Over the years, there have been court battles, lawsuits over parking, placement of mailboxes.

Ansell’s yard used to look very different. His Christmas display was so spectacular that people drove from all around to check it out each December.

He collected money for the salvation Army and Children’s Hospital.

We reported in 2005 when some neighbors complained about the traffic congestion on the street.

Five years later, his yard looked remarkably different. During a visit in 2010, KDKA found a plastic Santa with a cone on his head, the urinating Santa, and a plastic snowman that was being run over.

William Ansell put up a sign calling neighbors liars and thieves. One sign, which has since been removed, was targeted toward White’s late wife.

“My wife passed away a couple years ago and they put derogatory signs up about her death,” said White.

“They all speak truth in that when you steal somebody’s mailbox, I mean, you know, put a sign up calling them a thief,” said Robert Ansell. “I’m just exercising my First Amendment right.”

Neighbors took a photo of it, though Ansell denies putting an angel in his yard with a knife in her head after he was found guilty of harassment.

“There’s a threatening sign on his door that says no trespassing or violators will be shot and killed,” said Hebda. “There’s a lot of tension here.”

“Keeping poking the bear and the bear’s going to come back and he’s gonna bite you,” William Ansell said.

Brenden Morrow added his first playoff goal in more than five years, Tomas Vokoun made 19 saves and the Penguins rode their superstar captain to their fourth straight victory.

Crosby beat Craig Anderson three times in the game’s first 22 minutes, sending the goalie to the bench after stopping 18 of 21 shots.

Kyle Turris, Colin Greening and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for the Senators, but couldn’t stop Ottawa from falling into a deep hole against the Eastern Conference’s top seed. The Senators have never won a playoff series after dropping the first two games.

Game 3 is Sunday in Ottawa.

The Senators insisted they didn’t have to play a perfect game to hang with the Penguins, pointing to the way they controlled play at even strength for long stretches in a 4-1 loss in the series opener Tuesday night. Ottawa insisted if it could stay out of the penalty box and convert when it had the man advantage, it would be right there.

Despite doing both in the first period — killing two penalties and converting on Turris’ bank shot on the power play — the Senators still trailed 2-1.

More to the point, they trailed Crosby 2-1.

The Pittsburgh captain became the fifth player in franchise history to record 100 playoff points in spectacular fashion.

He collected an innocent-looking pass at the Pittsburgh blue line then darted up the left side. He split two Senators — including Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson — then ripped a shot under Anderson’s pad to give the Penguins the lead 3:16 into the game.

Turris tied it with the first soft goal Vokoun has allowed since taking over for Marc-Andre Fleury in Game 5 of the first-round series against the Islanders. Turris collected the puck near the left post and shot it off Vokoun and into the net.

Crosby one-upped Turris a few minutes later, zipping down the left side once again. This time, Crosby appeared to be looking to pass, eyeing linemate Pascal Dupuis as they raced in on Anderson. Only Crosby didn’t pass. At the last second and without even peeking directly at Anderson, he flipped a wrist shot near the goal line that smacked off the goalie’s pad and into the net.

Karlsson, who is still working his way back from an Achilles injury sustained when Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke inadvertently slashed Karlsson with his skate, drew a hooking penalty on Cooke early in the second.

Crosby didn’t need any fancy stickwork to record his first postseason hat trick since 2009. Instead he powered a slap shot over Anderson’s glove from the left circle to push Pittsburgh’s lead to 3-1. Anderson skated to the bench in favor of backup Robin Lehner.

Greening responded almost immediately after the switch, beating Vokoun with a sizzling wrist shot 40 seconds later to get the Senators within one.

Morrow restored the two-goal lead by redirecting Paul Martin’s blast from just outside the crease. It was Morrow’s first postseason score since May 14, 2008, while playing for the Dallas Stars.

The score was one of the few mistakes made by Lehner in his playoff debut.

The 21-year-old was stellar otherwise in relief of Anderson. He made 20 saves in all, including series of point-blank stops. He robbed Jarome Iginla on a 2-on-1 shortly after entering and used perfectly a timed slide to stone Evgeni Malkin on the doorstep in the third period.

Lehner’s play steadied the Senators, and Ottawa kept coming, pulling within a goal 2:01 into the third period when Pageau tapped the puck across the line following a mad scramble in front.

The Senators, however, couldn’t tie it as Pittsburgh remained unbeaten since Vokoun replaced Fleury and moved within two wins of making it to the conference finals for the first time since 2009 when the Penguins went on to win the Stanley Cup.

But a new investor has just purchased the property, and hopes to revitalize it very soon.

There are still lots of great stores out there, like Macy’s, Sears, J.C.Penney’s and Dick’s, but Century III Mall – once this region’s premier indoor mall – often looks empty and abandoned.

But help could be on the way. A Las Vegas private investment fund has just bought Century III, taking a gamble that the mall can be reenergized.

“Looking at the package, we noticed that there was huge potential and growth opportunity with this asset,” said Shawl Pryor, of Moonbeam Capital Investments.

Pryor is the senior vice president of Moonbeam Capital Investments, and he has more than 20 years of experience in shopping mall management.

“Century III Mall is centrally located, highly trafficked, and one thing that doesn’t change is location,” Pryor said.

Pryor says shoppers will begin to see cosmetic changes soon.

“You’ll see small things, and then that will escalate up to something that is much bigger as part of the revitalization of the mall,” said Pryor.

For the new owners, the biggest challenge is to bring more stores and people back into Century III, a mall which after all is much, much bigger than nearby South Hills Village.

Customers have their wish list, too.

“They used to have a drug store here, and a dollar store, stuff like that; and bingo for the older people, they’d love that,” said Chuck Greer.

While mall security says they’ve had no crime in recent years, some say better lighting outdoors and more security guards would help.

The new owners hope folks will give Century III another look.

“We want them to come back into the mall, feel welcome, and be part of this new experience of revitalization that we plan here at Century III Mall.

Congressman Jim Gerlach who represents the 6th District of Pennsylvania is a member of the committee. He talked to KDKA’s Bill Rehkopf about the hearing held in Washington DC.

Rep. Gerlach says that everyone on the committee is outraged with the IRS and former acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller, who talked to the Ways and Means Committee apologizing for, “the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided.”

Miller told the committee that he did not mislead the American people. When asked if he agrees with the statement that the special attention that was paid to the Tea Party applications because there were a lot of applications for tax exemptions and it just got buried, Rep. Gerlach says he doesn’t buy it.

“They decided to target certain conservative groups and delayed their application process with a lot of questions that are really chilling,” he added.

Rep. Gerlach added that the questions the IRS had were personal involving political and religious beliefs. Former commissioner Miller told the committee that he didn’t think what the IRS did was necessarily illegal.

Rep. Gerlach said that, “When he made that statement there was an audible gasp among us members on the committee because the law is very clear.”

Rep. Gerlach asked Miller a question about the knowledge that the White House and Treasury Department knew or did not now about the IRS targeting certain groups.

He was not satisfied with his answers and said, “I think we have some probing and additional work to do there. The current communications between him and others in the IRS and other people in the Treasury Department about confidential information sharing that again is illegal so we have a lot more work to do here.”

With the IRS situation and AP records being confiscated by the Department of Justice, Rep. Gerlach asks, “Who the heck is in charge in the executive branch of our government and why at the top level do they not know what the heck is going on with these agencies.”

“It just took a little while to get used to putting my license plate in every time,” Alan Dervin, of Swissvale, said.

“I had one of the meter people tell me if you put in one wrong letter we can give you a ticket,” added Ted Nethling, of the South Hills.

Melissa Travis did get a ticket when she transposed two letters from her license plate.

“There’s no way to correct it except for coming down here. So, I paid to park again to fight the ticket,” Travis said.

But even though she had the receipt proving that she paid to park at that allotted time and place, the magistrate at parking court refused to dismiss or even reduce her ticket.

Travis: “So, I paid the $20.”

KDKA’s Andy Sheehan: “Is this justice?”

Travis: “No, it’s not, and something needs to be done about these parking meter. People are paying this because they don’t, you know, they’ve heard these stories. They don’t come down here and fight it because you’re not going to win. This is a cash cow for the city. They’re going to make a fortune.

KDKA found that Travis is not alone.

Other people have complained to KDKA and have posted on Internet complaint boards that magistrates have refused to toss out their tickets despite documentation like Travis’s.

Sheehan: “Shouldn’t that ticket be tossed?”

Pittsburgh Parking Authority Executive Director Dave Onorato: “I would agree with that, yes.”

But Onorato says it’s up to the magistrate’s, not his, discretion.

“I would believe if you have a receipt showing you paid and it’s documented that’s the time you were parked there, I believe you should be dismissed; but that is the magistrate’s call in court,” he said.

Onorato says he will now meet with the magistrates to discuss this; but in the meantime, he says the Authority now has new software that is able to credit people who are off a number or a digit.

“It drastically reducing the number of tickets issued for that reason, but it’s not yet 100 percent fool proof,” Onorato added.

So now, even if you enter a bad license plate number, you may not get a ticket. But if you do get one, there’s no guarantee that the parking court judge will toss it.

Today is the 40th anniversary of the start of the Senate Watergate hearings.

If you’re over 40, chances are good your family TV was tuned into these hearings on whether President Nixon was involved in the Watergate burglaries and its cover-up.

The key whistleblower of that time was White House counsel John Dean, who recently sat down for an exclusive interview with KDKA political editor Jon Delano.

“I’m somebody who never sought a high profile ever in life, and something like 80 million Americans, 85 percent of the television audience, watched that,” Dean recalled of the time.

Dean, whose parents met here and whose son and grandchildren live here, was in town at an Allegheny County Bar Association seminar and reflected on the 40th anniversary of hearings that led to Nixon’s resignation.

“Today Watergate encompasses not just a bungled burglary and cover-up, but covers really all of Nixon’s abuses of power,” he observed.

It recalls Nixon’s famous line to TV interviewer David Frost: “When the president does it, that means it is not illegal.”

Nixon’s absurd belief that he was above the law justified illegal wiretapping and his cover-up of the Watergate burglary of Democratic headquarters.

“His desire for revenge against his enemies increases with his success,” noted Dean. “As he becomes clearer that he’s going to win reelection, he is going to have back at the people who along the way have caused him problems.”

What Dean 40 years ago called a cancer on the presidency brought Nixon down, but Dean and his team are working on another book listening to all the Nixon tapes to, says Dean, “literally follow the thread of what Nixon knew and when he knew it. I always assumed when I started the book I’m working on that somebody would have done that. Nobody did it.”

He won’t scoop himself, but says his book – timed for the 40th anniversary of Nixon’s resignation next year – will reveal even more of Nixon.

“This is one of the earlier nests that we had in Pennsylvania,” says ornithologist Art McMorris of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

He says pesticides once decimated the population. DDT was banned in 1972, and the birds started coming back.

The falcon known as Dorothy just hatched her 42nd offspring in the Cathedral ledge.

The word peregrine means wandering or migratory. And Dorothy lives up to her billing. Before she moved to the Pitt Cathedral, she grew up in Milwaukee.

McMorris approaches the nesting box. Game Commission colleague Dan Brauning brings a broom for defensive purposes.

The mother bird attacks as he reaches into the nest, removing the chick in a sack. Once inside, the bird is removed.

“Okay, we can see the dark tips of his primaries,” says the ornithologist. “Those are the main wing flight feathers. They’re coming in. They’ll start to appear in about 20 days.”

Then, he wraps a band around each leg.

“Anybody who finds it can report that band number, and we can identify the band,” he adds. “This is all to help the recovery of the species. Once a species has recovered, we won’t need to do this anymore.”

With a clean bill of health, the 22-day-old baby is returned to the nest.

“It’s all in a day’s work,” McMorris says.

There will be more security and students will be screened as they enter the gym, and later, a country club.

It turns out someone scribbled a bomb threat in a bathroom at the high school, which mentions the prom.

School officials say they have no choice; they have to make sure the prom is safe.

State police will be among the students as they arrive in their tuxedos and gowns.

The students have to go through screening when they enter the gym for the prom’s grand march. Bags will be tagged and secured by parent chaperones.

There will be additional screening later when the party heads to Chestnut Ridge Country Club. Chaperones and security guards will also be posted at the club’s exit doors and hallways.

“We found a message on a restroom stall on May 3 indicating something may happen on May 17, which is today, the date of our prom,” said Superintendent Dale Kirsch. “Since then, the state police have been involved and our school staff has been investigating.

School officials call this a “low grade” threat. But it’s a threat nonetheless.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning that human feces are found in more than half of public swimming pools, confirming that E.coli is in 58 percent of samples tested from pool filters.

“People, when they swim, obviously their whole body goes in the water, so anything that is on their bodies is likely to end up in the water,” says Dr. Ronald Voorhees, the acting director of the Allegheny County Health Department.

Chlorine, the primary pool disinfectant, should handle most microbes.

But some E.coli, which can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, can be stubborn if chlorine levels are not adequate.

“So anybody that’s had diarrhea recently, until they are over it, they should not use a pool,” Dr. Voorhees said.

The CDC tested water from pools in Atlanta and results should be comparable to other areas.

In Allegheny County, pools are supposedly checked regularly.

“Our staff occasionally inspects, but it’s really up to the pool operators to be checking on a schedule,” said Dr. Voorhees. “But we also know that chlorine has to be there for a while. It doesn’t instantly kill bacteria.”

The CDC report showed:

• E. coli was in 70 percent of municipal pools.
• It was found in 49 percent of club or other membership pools.
• And 73 percent of kiddie pools tested positive for the bacteria.

“People should shower well before they go in the pool,” Dr. Voorhees added. “There are signs up, but a lot of people don’t heed them. They should.”

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wildwood Highlands Family Fun Center, a miniature golf course and family entertainment center in the 2300-block of Wildwood Road.

Police say a 2-year-old was removed from a pond.

It’s unclear where on the property the incident happened.

Off-duty Pittsburgh Police Officer Corey Harcha performed CPR on the boy at the scene.

“He was not moving,” said Harcha. “He was unconscious and his face and his lips were both blue. At first I started with chest compressions and after about a minute of that I gave two breaths mouth to mouth and then continued with chest compressions until he started to cough.”

Harcha said he was “relieved” when he noticed the boy started breathing again.

“As I pulled into the parking lot and got out of my car, I heard a lady screaming from across the parking lot. I went over to investigate,” said Harcha. “She came running over to me with a lifeless toddler in her hands. I asked her what had happened and she stated that he had fallen in the water and he’s not breathing. So I asked her to place him on the ground, I identified myself as an off-duty police officer; I gave my phone to a friend to call 911. I started to perform CPR on the little boy. After a couple of minutes of performing CPR, he started to come back to… he started to cough, then once he started to breathe, I waited for responding units and medics and let them take over.”

The toddler was taken to Children’s Hospital.

Harcha is a six-year veteran of the Pittsburgh Police who works in Zone 3.

“I was just doing what I was trained to do,” Harcha said. “I am glad that the (2-year-old) boy is recovering.”

Police say the boy is still in the hospital in critical condition.

Tim Duncan had 19 points and six rebounds, Kawhi Leonard scored 16 points and the Spurs won the series in six games.

Tony Parker shook off a poor start to score 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Tiago Splitter added a career-playoff high 14 points for San Antonio, which led by 13 late in the third quarter.

Stephen Curry shot 10 of 25 from the floor to score 22 points on a nagging left ankle. Jarrett Jack had 15 points as the injury-saddled Warriors wore down. The Spurs outshot Golden State 45 percent to 39 percent.

Second-seeded San Antonio will open the conference finals at home against Memphis on Sunday. The fifth-seeded Grizzlies eliminated Oklahoma City in five games.

The Spurs became the first team to win consecutive games in the series and hand the Warriors consecutive losses in the playoffs—and they did it at just the right time.

The Spurs quieted a standing-room-only crowd late in the third quarter and seemingly seized control for good. Instead, the Warriors roared back.

Klay Thompson, who had 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting, made a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that sliced San Antonio’s lead to three. And Curry’s pull-up jumper brought the Warriors within 77-75 with 4:52 to play.

Parker was 1 for 13 before hitting a corner 3-pointer to give San Antonio an 80-75 lead. Leonard followed with two free throws to put the Spurs up seven.

Jack made a jumper and two free throws to bring the Warriors back again. Then Leonard hit another corner 3-pointer for the Spurs to go ahead 85-79.

Curry and Thompson had consecutive 3s rim out on the same possession. Parker hit another 3-pointer to put San Antonio up 88-79 with 1:15 remaining and send some of the yellow-shirted crowd of 19,596 heading to the exits.

Fans serenaded the home team with chants of “Warr-i-ors!” in the final seconds. Curry also grabbed the microphone after the game and thanked fans at half court, breaking the huddle with the crowd, “Just us!”

The Spurs showed incredible ball movement all game and had the Warriors playing from behind most of the way. San Antonio’s first 10 field goals came on an assist, going ahead by 10 points twice in the second quarter and maintaining that cushion until late.

Golden State stayed close despite more injury setbacks in a season full of them. Andrew Bogut walked gingerly to the locker room with 8:31 remaining in the second quarter to get his troublesome left ankle re-tapped. Upstart rookie Harrison Barnes fell awkwardly while leaping to contest a layup in the second quarter from Boris Diaw.

Barnes hit the court hard and his teammates immediately called for the training staff to attend to him as the arena fell silent. He received six stitches above his right eye at halftime and ran on the court late to start the third quarter, bringing fans to their feet roaring once more.

At least for a moment.

Barnes left the game in the fourth quarter because of a headache, the team said. He finished with nine points and four rebounds in 31 minutes.

The steady Spurs kept making the Warriors work for every shot and grinding out points on the other end. San Antonio took a 61-48 lead late in the third quarter before Golden State started its final surge.

The Spurs made sure it wasn’t enough.

Miami survived a feisty Chicago Bulls team in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Friday night. Chicago was missing its top three players, Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, and Derrick Rose, and still took Miami to the final buzzer in Game 5.

While Miami had a commanding 3-1 lead heading into Game 5, Heat fans were concerned with the condition of guard Dwyane Wade’s right knee. Wade has battled a knee problem throughout the playoffs and at times it’s forced him to completely change his game, but never to the detriment of the team.

During Game 5, Wade went into the locker room to have his knee re-wrapped heading into the fourth quarter. When he re-entered the game, he helped the Heat push ahead of the Bulls for the rest of the game.

Wade scored six points in the fourth quarter and in 45 seconds had a blocked shot, defensive rebound, offensive rebound, and a massive putback dunk that had the crowd of the AmericanAirlines Arena rocking.

“Dwyane is uncanny,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “When the competition is at its highest, and its fiercest, he finds a way.”

“I’ll go on and on about how great he is,” Heat superstar LeBron James said. “I really don’t care for the trash talk that he receives.”

The Heat shut down center Joakim Noah in Game 5, limiting him to three points and nine rebounds. But, the Bulls did manage to get Carlos Boozer free for 26 points and 14 rebounds and Nate Robinson had 21 points, but needed 15 shots to get there.

Miami had another solid effort from the entire roster with LeBron, Udonis Haslem, Wade, and Chris Bosh all scoring in double-figures. Mario Chalmers added six points while Shane Battier added 9 points and Chris Andersen had six points in the victory.

Through nine playoff games, Miami is tops in points allowed per game at just 84.7. The Heat’s defense is only allowing teams to hit 29.8 percent of its three-point shots and just 40.9 percent of their overall shots, both of which are best in the league. Miami is also forcing 16 turnovers per game.

On the flip side, Miami is leading the league in field goal percentage at 49.1 percent in the playoffs and is sixth overall during the playoffs in points per game at 98.6.

Miami will open the East finals at home next week. If Indiana beats New York on Thursday — the Pacers lead that series 3-1 — then the Heat and Pacers will meet in Game 1 in Miami on Monday. If the Knicks extend the Pacers to at least six games, then the East finals open Wednesday, regardless of opponent.

“It only gets more difficult and more challenging,” Spoelstra said.

Miami has just one victory over each team this season and lost the season series to both the Knicks and the Pacers. But, that was outside of the playoffs and Miami will be able to rest Wade’s knee until Monday at the earliest.
