Pittsburgh’s nightlife and music scene is littered with great venues and artists. Here, we interview two local music scenesters and ask them their favorite places around the city to see a show and grab some drinks!
Name: Shira Krasnow
Occupation: Dance teacher/choreographer at Point Park.
How long have you lived in Pittsburgh?: 24 years. I taught dance in Israel for 3 years.
What is your favorite local act/artist? : Right now, it’s Mac Miller.
What makes Pittsburgh’s music/nightlife scene stand out from other cities? : What I like about the recent music that’s been coming out by artists from Pittsburgh is that they have been naming their material after places around the city. Mac Millers Blue Side Park, and Party on Fifth Ave. Whiz Khalifa’s new album is called Taylor Allderdice. A lot of artists from Pittsburgh represent these specific places, and their songs still have appeal outside of the city. I really like that.
If you were entertaining out of town guests, what bar/nightclub would you take them to for a show or just drinks? : I probably would take them to Diesel and S Bar and I also really like the Highlander on Highland Ave.
When you aren’t performing or going to shows, what is your favorite Happy Hour/Drink special spot? : The Highlander.
Favorite springtime cocktail? : Oh that’s easy; I always have a Malibu Bay Breeze.
Do you have a go-to karaoke song? : I like “Cold Hearted Snake” by Paula Abdul
Shameless plug: I’ve been performing monthly at Deisel Nightclub, so keep an eye out for that. My Point Park classes are also available for to public.
Name: Becky Corrigan
Occupation: Massage Therapist, Member of Bloated Sluts, and Spinster. Sometimes I DJ.
How long have you lived in Pittsburgh? : 20 years
What is your favorite venue to play at/see a show? : I’d say Gooskis is a great place to see a show. I also like to play at Howlers.
What makes Pittsburgh’s music/nightlife scene stand out from other cities? : Pittsburgh is a hard rock kind of town. People are enthusiastic and they have good audience members and a gritty music scene. People like to get drunk and have a good time.
If you were entertaining out of town guests, what bar/nightclub would you take them to for a show or just drinks? : Cantina’s Thursday karaoke night, otherwise Gooskis. All purpose cheap bar with a great jukebox and great bartenders.
When you aren’t performing or going to shows, what is your favorite Happy Hour/Drink special spot? : The Rock Room on Polish Hill.
Favorite springtime cocktail? : A Mojito.
Do you have a go-to karaoke song? : “Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Shameless plug: The Bloated Sluts have a record coming out in the spring/summer, so look out for that.
