Free Summer Concert Series Guide

By Daniel CooperWhat can be better than kicking back on a beautiful grassy field on a warm summer night listening to free music? Every summer Allegheny County puts on complimentary performances in the most scenic parks. Hartwood Acres and South Park are the places that host the majority of these events. So, pack your picnic and bring your family, friends, and dogs to head out for a fun evening under the stars. These are some of the highlighted shows that you can still catch.

Brett Eldredge and Sydney Hutchko
Country singers Brett Eldredge and Sydney Hutchko play at South Park on Friday July 15th at 7:30pm. Brett Eldredge is based on Atlantic Records in Nashville. He has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and has hit the top 50 of the country single charts with his song "Raymond", about an elderly Alzheimer's patient. Sydney Hutchko has been labeled as an upcoming singer/songwriter in the Nashville area. She also happened to be raised just outside of Pittsburgh. Her first EP is to be released this year.

John Patitucci Trio
Up next at South Park Amphitheater: The John Patitucci Trio will perform on Friday, July 29th sponsored by BNY Mellon Jazz. Patitucci has recorded over 13 albums and has performed with the likes of BB King, Chick Corea and Joanne Brackeen. He has been recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and received two Grammy Awards. The band has toured across the world and will perform in our little corner at 7:30pm.

Martin Sexton
Finally the much-accomplished Martin Sexton will perform on Friday, August 12th at 7:30pm the South Park Amphitheater. He plays folk/Americana acoustic and is also known as a gifted producer. His music mixes soul, R&B, blues and many other genres. His songs have been featured on many TV shows including Scrubs and Parenthood. He is considered one of the most prolific acoustic folk singers today.

The High Kings
Irish Folk in the Burgh? Of course. The High Kings will perform their brand of Irish ballads on Sunday, July 31st at 7:30pm. They have held the title as the "best folk group" by the Irish Music Awards for the past three years. The Irish Super Group has performed across the world having pedigrees that venture back to over a century. Ticket prices usually range from $25 –$40 to hear this band in a proper venue. However, this is a free show and should not be missed.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals play a blend of rock/pop that is pleasing to the ears on Monday, August 8th at 7:30pm. The band is one of the most buzzed about groups in the blogosphere having mentions across the country. Based in Vermont the band has been playing since 2002. They released their third LP this past year entitled "This Is Somewhere." Performing as a trio, the band places much emphasis on creating organic music that stretches many genres.

Daniel Cooper has resided in Pittsburgh for over 10 years. He enjoys a wide variety of music and arts. On most weekends he can be found enjoying the public parks of the county.
