How To Wear Neutrals

By Sally Turkovich

After years of animal prints, ombre prints and sequins dominating runway models from head to toe, the fall and spring runways showed models rocking something refreshing and easy to translate into every day life: NEUTRALS!

Get ready ladies, now is the season when the runway fashions do not need a decoder ring!

Those great camel-colored trousers you've seen everywhere? They will look fabulous with an emerald-colored, long-sleeved silk shirt like Jennifer Love Hewitt has. Find a similar one by Elie Tahari at Nordstroms.

If the thought of doing a jewel tone during the hum-drum winter months, this is just a little too much to start with; take a deep breath and reach for some no-brainer items to wear: a simple dress or suit in a creamy taupe or latte color. Ann Taylor displays some of the best runway (or Princess) to everyday fashions around. There taupe, Dolman sleeve dress is a fabulous basic that is a must have for your closet this season.

Styled with dark-hued tights and some biker-chic booties, the outfit will show that neutrals are not boring. If you are craving some color, throw on a brightly-colored gemstone necklace or tie on an animal print scarf to pay a little homage to the haute-couture runway styles.

One of the hottest ways to wear neutral tones this season is to wear them on an often overlooked body part when it comes to runway fashion: feet! Sure, shoe shopping is always something we want to do. In a time when sky high heels with studs seem to be all the rage, the understated nude, low-heeled pump is roaring into the spotlight.

Celebrity stylists are always telling us to do everything we can to elongate the look of our legs and skin-colored shoes are the easiest way to do it! Match the tone of the shoe to the tone of your skin and you'll instantly look taller and leaner when you're wearing a wide-legged trouser or knee-length skirt. Check out pumps similar to these by Cole Haan, they come in several different colors from nude to chocolate brown to give ladies of every skin tone a chance to jump into the trend.

Let's review!

If you're wearing a neutral bottom, punch up the outfit with a colored top.

If you're rocking a neutral, classic dress, accessorize with small pops of color so the neutral palette doesn't get lost.

If you're looking for the one "must buy" item of the season to embrace the neutrals trend, the nude-colored, heel pump is it. Wear it with everything! Just make sure you wear your snow boots or rain boots when the weather turns ugly and carry your nude shoes in your work tote to slip on once you're inside! Those nude shoes will definitely show the road grit!
