In Pittsburgh, we take special pride in the fact that the vaccine for polio was developed right here by Dr. Jonas Salk, and first used April 12, 1955.
On April 12, 1955, Dr. Jonas Salk announced that a huge clinical trial had proved successful. He and other researchers at the University of Pittsburgh had developed a vaccine to end infantile paralysis, better known as polio.
The work of Dr. Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh made world news with the development of the Salk Vaccine.
