There was plenty of support and encouragement for runners as they prepared for the annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race at Frick Park.

Gualberto Carhuaslla and his daughter, Antonia, pound the pavement of their Squirrel Hill neighborhood, training for those ten kilometers in Sunday’s Great Race. Gualberto, a native of Peru whose first love is soccer, says it’s not easy keeping up with a daughter who has run half-marathons.
On the delicate subject of age — let’s just say they’re both 70 something — though you’d have a hard time believing that watching them go through their paces at the Schenley Oval.
To kick off “Great Race Week” roughly 1,000 kids will participate in the 17th running of the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Registration for the 2012 Great Race is officially closed after setting a new record. A total of 15,000 runners and walkers are now signed up to participate in this year’s event.
