A stray dog from Ohio is getting a new lease on life, thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society.
KDKA Radio’s Mike Pintek was joined on the show by the new Executive Director of the Western PA Humane Society, David Janusek.
The struggling economy is forcing human owners to surrender their dogs and cats to humane shelters. With job losses and home foreclosures, they often just can’t afford to keep caring for a pet.
The Animal Rescue League in East Liberty has quarantined the dogs at its shelter after an increase in cases of a virus that can be deadly. Officials say the canine parvovirus is highly contagious and is “spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces.”
It’s crisis mode for the staff and volunteers at the Western PA Humane Society. Their North Side shelter is overrun, spilling into the hallways with not stray animals, but owner-surrendered pets.
