TALE OF THE TAPE

Week 14: Kansas City Chiefs At Cleveland Browns

Chiefs
Browns
Minnesota Vikings v Kansas City Chiefs
Cleveland Browns v Green Bay Packers
Quarterback
Brady Quinn gave the Chiefs solid quarterback play in the Week 13 victory over the Panthers. However, it’s difficult to imagine him playing well two weeks in a row, especially against a team that is hungry to win and has had as few opportunities as the Browns. Quinn has a difficult time throwing the ball accurately when pressed and the Browns will come after him.
Winner Brandon Weeden has given the Browns everything they could have expected from him. Weeden has a good arm and has learned what the coaches expect from him, but what may make him a decent quarterback in the future is his courage under fire. He doesn’t back down and he could turn out to be a good quarterback if the Browns get him decent talent.
Offense
Jamaal Charles has given the Browns the kind of ground game they needed to be an effective team. He has run for 1,055 yards and is averaging 4.8 yards per carry. However, he can’t carry the team and the passing game has been awful. Tony Moeaki is a solid-effort tight end with good hands, but Dwayne Bowe will break your heart with his inconsistency.
Winner The running game has been fairly dependable for the Browns, thanks to Trent Richardson. He has rushed for 827 yards, but his 3.6 yards per carry mark is somewhat disappointing. Josh Gordon is not a finished product at the wide receiver spot, but he can go down the field and get it. Tight end Ben Watson can make tough third-down catches.
Defense
The Chiefs don’t have as many problems on defense as they do on offense, but they make big mistakes at key moments. The Chiefs are ninth in pass defense and 16th overall, but they can rarely hang in for 60 minutes. Derrick Johnson is one of the best tacklers in the league with 97 stops. Cornerback Brandon Flowers has 11 passes defensed and three interceptions.
Winner The Browns still have work to do on defense, but this is a positive for this team headed towards the 2013 season. The Browns can be very tough to run against and they must make stopping Charles their priority if they are going to handle the Chiefs. Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has a team-high 89 tackles and 3.0 sacks.
Special Teams
Winner The Chiefs have plenty of speed on special teams but they have rarely held their own in that area. Javier Arenas should be an explosive player but he has not had a return of greater than 27 yards this season. Placekicker Ryan Succop has made 25-of-28 FG attempts this season.
Winner Phil Dawson is almost never going to miss a field goal attempt. He has made 23-of-24 FG attempts this season and his technique is nearly perfect. Reggie Hodges is an average punter. Joshua Cribbs is one of the best return men in the NFL, but he has not brought a return back for a score this season.

The Winner Is

Cleveland Browns v Green Bay Packers
Winner Browns
4 out of 4

The Browns rarely have the opportunity to win a game in a run away, but this could be one of them. The Chiefs are awful and they are reeling as a result of the murder-suicide involving linebacker Jovan Belcher that they have just endured. Cleveland has issues, but the Browns are moving in the right direction.
