A Day In Lawrenceville

A day in Pittsburgh's iconic Lawerenceville may look something like this: shop, eat, drink, shop, relax, socialize, eat. With a multitude of award-winning restaurants to choose from, outstanding shops and some of the best bars the city has to offer, Lawrenceville - and particularly Butler Street - has turned from a sleepy industry town to a desirable night (or weekend!) spot for Pittsburgh's cultured. Super close to the Strip District and conveniently located in close proximity to the eastern 'burbs, Lawrenceville needs to be your next destination for a day or evening jaunt.

Justin Severino, a Pittsburgh native and expertly skilled whole animal butcher, knows a thing or two about kitchens. After opening Cure, a charcuterie with distinct Italian and Mediterranean flair, he was named Food and Wine's Best New Chef in 2014. Cure was also dubbed one of the Top 50 Best New Restaurants by Bon Appetit magazine. Most interestingly (and the next item on the list), Justin procures a lot of his whole, locally sourced produce and meats from Wild Purveyors, which is just a block away,

Peruse beautiful, locally sourced and respectfully gathered food from proprietors Cavan and Tom Patterson at this unusual market. Framed by counters carved from tree trunks, exposed brick walls and vintage accoutrements, Wild Purveyors was recently featured on the popular Travel TV show "Bizarre Foods America." Customers come for heritage grains, locally farmed produce, Pennsylvania cheeses and freshly caught fish and stay for foodie events and tasings. The Patterson boys made their mark as foragers, who procure a vast array of mushrooms and other edibles year round. The Pattersons' space includes a farmhouse table, around which they host beer tastings and dinners attended by Pittsburgh chefs, many of whom they supply with their fine products (such as Cure - see above).

Wildcard

Handmade pieces by local artisans, awesome, one-of-a-kind greeting cards and cats, so many cats is what you'll find at Wildcard. Wildcard also carries unique screen-printed tees, holiday gifts, collectibles and so much more. Make Wildcard a priority on your Lawrenceville to-do list if you're in the market for an unusual gift or item for the home, and feel secure knowing your dollar is supporting local business. If you're an artist looking to become one of Wildcard's preferred vendors, it is always accepting applications.

A rotating tap list, friendly service and local art make New Amsterdam one of the best, and aesthetically pleasing, bars in Lawrenceville. Go for its delicious craft beer selection and full bar, but become a regular for New Amsterdam's fine food selection - think crab mac 'n cheese, fish tacos and 35-cent wings in a bevy of delicious flavors. The bar's dark and intimate ambiance is suddenly thrown off with summer's opening of the garage door (Amsterdam resides in a converted mechanic's quarters), so there's always movement, sound and light streaming in Pittsburgh's lovely hidden gem.
