For the first time ever, Light Up Night actually spreads over two nights. This 50th anniversary edition of the Christmas shopping kick-off is set for Nov. 19-20. Market Square will be adorned with more than three miles of lights. Hours of entertainment will be provided by groups like the CAPA choir, the Joe Negri Quartet, the Alderdice Marching Band and Donnie Iris. Here are some of the other things you don’t want to miss when downtown Pittsburgh turns on the lights later this month. Here are some of the highlights of things you can expect to find this year.

Highmark Light Up Night March

For the second year, the Light Up Night March will wind its way through Downtown on Friday November 19th. It will feature five regional high school bands totaling 500 musicians. It will start near the Pittsburgh Creche around 6:15 at Grant Street. The end of the march will be Market Square for the Market Square Season of Lights display.

Market Square Season of Lights

Colcom Foundation will light up the newly renovated Market Square like it’s never been seen before. More than three miles of LED lights will turn the downtown area into a twinkling holiday fantasy land. At least 150,000 lights will be used in Market Square.

PNC Fireworks Finale from the Warhol Bridge

It’s not really a big deal in Pittsburgh without Zambelli Fireworks, right? This year the pyrotechnics display will be launched from the Warhol Bridge at 9:38 Friday, November 19th. The theatrical presentation will be synchronized to the sounds of the season and broadcast live on 3WS Radio 94.5 FM. More than 10,000 shells and devices will be used in this wonderful display.

Live Performances at Market Square

At least ten shows will hit the stage in Market Square on Saturday, November 10th. The Pitt Pendulums, a cappella group, will start the entertainment at 10 AM. Through out the day, other groups including the Joe Negri Quartet and the Borelli Dance Gallery will provide live shows.

Local Couple to be Married by Santa Claus

Lynn Smith and Fred Bell of Mt. Pleasant will have a wedding like few have ever seen. They will be married in Market Square at 7:00 PM Saturday, November 20th. Santa Claus will marry Lynn and Fred with thousands of their closest friends and family there to watch.

Last night was the un-veiling of MACY’s windows. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT ! They were the WORSE display I have ever seen in those windows ! MACY’s should be ashamed to display such garbage ! They look like paper cut-outs made by grade school kids ! KDKA should be ashamed to be part of the unveiling ceremony that got everybody excited FOR NOTHING ! I can’t remember KAUFMANNS ever having such a poor display and I haven’t seen a good one since MACYS took over ! What a big letdown for so many excited children !
