Dining On A Dime: Georgetowne Inn

By Blake Matthews

After an astonishingly successful first budget meal adventure, Partner-In-Dine (PID) and I were excited to continue on our journey to help you find ways to experience fine dining without breaking the bank. We scoured the local deals and decided it was time to revisit an old friend and try to beat an old record, so we ended up at the Georgetowne Inn on Mt. Washington.

About six months ago, PID and I celebrated our anniversary by sharing our first experience here. We had read some mixed reviews, but had found a coupon on Restaurant.com and thought we'd decide for ourselves. Our first trip was nothing less than impressive. We thought everything was completely delicious and, with our coupon, spent significantly less than we had even thought possible. So this time, we thought we'd approach it from a different angle and set ourselves a lower budget in an attempt to prove you can eat at one of the area's priciest restaurants for a reasonable price.

We set the bar at $50 because we know all too well that, on Mt. Washington, you don't just pay for the food, you pay for the view (which is breathtaking, by the way…).

We made sure to abide by our budget rules by dining on a weeknight and avoiding the alcohol, but were pleased to realize that every entrée comes with soup, salad and choice of side. This meant we actually could avoid an appetizer as well and still be satisfied.

We both began with the French Onion Soup and spinach salad with warm bacon vinaigrette. The soup was very unique (as French onion's go) and I really enjoyed it. The bacon vinaigrette certainly awakened the taste buds.

For our entrees, PID and I went with the Prime Rib Au Jus and Jumbo Lump Crab Florentine respectively. Unfortunately, PID's meal was a bit disappointing. I'd suggest going in a different direction (last time he had the New York Strip Steak with Bleu Cheese and loved it). My meal was much better, but I was certainly glad I had the coupon because it didn't quite equate to its menu price for me.

We skipped dessert, not simply to stay within budget, but because we just plain didn't need it! Even without an appetizer, we were stuffed.

Here's how the night broke down:

Double Deals Coupon $25
Drinks: $5.50
Entrée: Prime Rib Au Jus, $28.95
Entrée: Jumbo Lump Crab Florentine, $27.95
Coupon Discount: $50
Tax: $2.62
Tip: $10 (Always tip on the total, prior to discount
Total: $47.40

Overall Opinion:

So while we were slightly less happy with our meals than the first time we dined here (we still have faith in you, Georgetowne!), we managed to dine on Mt. Washington for less than $50.00! The extraordinary view alone is worth it, especially for a romantic dinner for two.
