Light Up Night Causes Traffic Changes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As the decorations go up around the newly re-opened Market Square, Robin Frederick of Dunkin' Donuts expects to see something that was lacking from last year's Light Up Night: people!

"Tons of people walking through! Lots of new faces! I think Market Square is pulling the city back together so we're seeing faces we haven't seen before," Frederick said.

But parking restrictions and road closures are already taking effect in the square and around town, so if this is your first or 50th Light Up Night, there's are some details you need to know.

Around Market Square, Forbes Avenue and Market Street are already closed until midnight Saturday.

The Santa Spectacular at Point State Park will close Commonwealth Place from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The big unveiling of Macy's windows means both Smithfield Street and Forbes Avenue around the downtown store will close from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Also, around Fifth Avenue Place, Liberty Avenue will close between Fifth Avenue and Stanwix Street from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The Clemente Bridge will be closed from 5 a.m. until midnight.

The Andy Warhol Bridge will be open for morning rush hour traffic, but it will close too, from 10 a.m. until midnight.

The Rachel Carson Bridge is also getting in on the act, but a much shorter closure – 9:15 p.m. until 10 p.m. – just in time for the fireworks.

Meanwhile, back in Market Square, Frederick is expecting a crush of coffee and cocoa guzzlers. She knows it will be a busy night.
