Turkey Trot Racers Work Up Appetite Downtown

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's a Thanksgiving tradition for thousands in Pittsburgh.

Despite the wet weather, people laced up their running shoes for the 20th Annual PNC YMCA Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot this morning.

KDKA's Rick Dayton was there as the runners made their way through the streets of Pittsburgh:

'Twas the morn before turkey
And all 'cross the town,
Runners set out
And hoped not to drown.

"My kids and my husband ran the One Mile Fun Run," said Carolyn Newkirk, of Mount Lebanon. "I felt horrible asking them to do that, but they were troopers and did it."

The rain they could deal with
'Tis merely just water.
'Twould only been better,
If it had been hotter.

"My teammates thought it would be a good idea to wear t-shirts," said Steve Cottington, of Cranberry Township. "That didn't work out that well for me. It was a little cold, but it was fun."

They laced up their ASICS,
Their New Balance, Nikes;
But one thing we didn't find out here,
Any bikes.

"Might be a little slippery for a bike today; might fall over because it's wet," said Katie Stancki, of Cleveland, Ohio.

Some ran real fast,
While others ran slow.
There was some agreement,
Sure glad there's no snow.

"I'd be snowboarding. I wouldn't be here. I'd go to the mountains for that," said Mike Bayster, who competed in the 5K Turkey Trot.

Some run to relax
They say it is freein'.
They must take advice
From our Andy Sheehan.

"Great way to have a guilt-free Thanksgiving," said Sheehan, who ran in the Five-Mile Turkey Trot. "Run it all off."

They slogged through the miles
In all, a great day.
So, Happy Thanksgiving
From KDKA!
