Pirates Sign Nieve, Marte, Brown To Minor League Contracts
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed three players with major league experience to minor league contracts, including right-hander Fernando Nieve, who had a 6.00 ERA with with the New York Mets last season.
The Bucs also signed infielder Andy Marte, who played for the Cleveland Indians for the last 5 seasons. During his six seasons in the major leagues, Marte has logged 20 home runs and 96 RBIs; he has a batting average of .218.
Catcher Dusty Brown also signed a minor league contract with the Pirates after breaking into the majors with the Boston Red Sox.
All three players received invitations Wednesday to the Pirates' major league spring training camp. Relievers Justin Thomas and Sean Gallagher were also invited to attend the camp.
Since the season ended, the Pirates have released Brandon Moss, Andy LaRoche, Delwyn Young and traded Zach Duke to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
