Truck Hits Crossing Guard, Child

INDIANA (KDKA) -- A vehicle accident in Indiana County sent a crossing guard and an 11-year-old child to the hospital Friday morning.

The accident happened at the intersection of Fourth and Philadelphia Streets around 8:30 a.m.

According to a police officer at the scene, the driver of a truck was making a left turn onto Philadelphia Street when he struck the victims.

"She had the light to go across Philadelphia street and she did just so. She had a minor child with her," said Ofc. Jenny Lenhart, of Indiana Borough Police. "They walked from the north side of the street to the south side of the street and as they crossed the street, a truck made a left hand turn into the crosswalk, striking both of them."

The crossing guard, Ruth McGeary, 86, was taken to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown.

The child was also taken to the hospital.

At this point, officials have not released any information on the extent of their injuries.

"It was a bad sight, I mean, he stopped, he sat right here with his truck, he didn't try to leave anywhere," said Arthur Havens, a witness. "But, people are just trying to go somewhere too fast, too soon, when they don't have too."

Authorities say no charges have by filed so far, but the investigation continues.
